A novel low-order spatiotemporal modeling method for nonlinear distributed parameter systems

Most distributed parameter systems (DPSs) are unknown, including unknown parameter, boundary and even structure, and have a strongly nonlinear spatiotemporal nature. In order to achieve desirable modeling accuracy, the models from the commonly used DPS modeling methods often have a high order, which makes them difficultly used for prediction and control. Here, a novel low-order spatiotemporal least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) method is proposed for modeling unknown and nonlinear DPSs. Generally, the information of a certain sensor may be represented by information of its neighboring sensors due to the spatial correlation between them. Making use of this feature, a kernel-space based spatial correlation analysis method is developed for deleting redundant spatial kernel functions, from which a low-order model can be achieved and it is without loss of any spatial information. On this basis, a LS-SVM model is constructed to represent the nonlinear temporal dynamics. Integration of the without-redundant spatial kernel functions and the LS-SVM temporal model, a low-order spatiotemporal model is created to reconstruct the spatiotemporal dynamics of the nonlinear DPSs. Additional analysis and proof show that: (1) the proposed method has the same modeling performance with the without-order-reduction spatiotemporal modeling method;and (2) it has better modeling performance than the model with the same order achieved by the without-order-reduction one. Using case studies, the effectiveness of the proposed method and its superior modeling ability compared to several common methods are demonstrated. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

DC-boundary finite-time stabilisation for distributed parameter systems

In this study, the finite-time stabilisation problem of distributed parameter systems with control acting on a Dirichlet condition (DC) boundary is considered. First, the corresponding distributed parameter system with inhomogeneous DC-boundaries is equivalently transformed into another distributed parameter system with homogeneous DC-boundaries. A DC-boundary feedback controller is then designed in terms of the distributed state, and sufficient conditions for L-2 finite-time stabilisation and W-1,W- 2 finite-time stabilisation of distributed parameter systems are provided through the use of Lyapunov functionals. The issues regarding the finite-time stabilisation of distributed parameter systems are converted into the feasibility of matrix inequalities, and the availability of the proposed results is verified through two numerical simulations.

Controller design for parabolic distributed parameter systems using finite integral transform techniques

A procedure is presented for designing a control system for distributed parameter systems of parabolic type based on the reduced-order decoupled state-space model obtained by a finite integral-transform technique. A Kalman filter is used as an observer to estimate the stale variables, and state feedback control is performed. The method was applied to a one-dimensional heat conduction process and a moving bed adsorber. Both state estimation and control performances were satisfactory in spite of the model and parameter uncertainties. Following this controller design approach, the searching algorithms for the optimal sensors' and the optimal actuators' allocation problems were solved. These algorithms were applied to a one-dimensional heat conduction process in order to confirm the slate estimator and controller performance. The fastest state estimation could be achieved by assigning the sensors at the optimal locations and the desired state distribution was realized with a few actuators located at the optimal positions. We present a method for generating globally stable feedback control laws for maneuvers of distributed parameter structural systems. The method can accommodate system nonlinearity, and our proof of Lyapunov stability does not rely upon spatially discretizing distributed parameter systems. The approach applies directly to controllable distributed parameter systems that are open-loop conservative or dissipative. The most fundamental version of the formulation leads to controls that drive the system to a fixed point in the state space, but more generally, we develop tracking-type control laws to null the departure of the system state from a smooth target trajectory. Both analytical developments and experimental results are presented. The analytical results provide a theoretical foundation for the approach, whereas the experimental results provide conclusive evidence that the approach can be efficiently realized in actual hardware.

Results of transfer function analysis for a class of distributed parameter systems described by dissipative hyperbolic partial differential equations defined on a one-dimensional spatial domain are presented. For the case of two boundary inputs, the closed-form expressions for the individual elements of the 2 x 2 transfer function matrix are derived both in the exponential and in the hyperbolic form, based on the decoupled canonical representation of the system. Some important properties of the transfer functions considered are pointed out based on the existing results of semigroup theory. The influence of the location of the boundary inputs on the transfer function representation is demonstrated. The pole-zero as well as frequency response analyses are also performed. The discussion is illustrated with a practical example of a shell and tube heat exchanger operating in parallel- and countercurrent-flow modes.

Feedback Optimal Control of distributed parameter systems by Using Finite-Dimensional Approximation Schemes

Optimal control for systems described by partial differential equations is investigated by proposing a methodology to design feedback controllers in approximate form. The approximation stems from constraining the control law to take on a fixed structure, where a finite number of free parameters can be suitably chosen. The original infinite-dimensional optimization problem is then reduced to a mathematical programming one of finite dimension that consists in optimizing the parameters. The solution of such a problem is performed by using sequential quadratic programming. Linear combinations of fixed and parameterized basis functions are used as the structure for the control law, thus giving rise to two different finite-dimensional approximation schemes. The proposed paradigm is general since it allows one to treat problems with distributed and boundary controls within the same approximation framework. It can be applied to systems described by either linear or nonlinear elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic equations in arbitrary multidimensional domains. Simulation results obtained in two case studies show the potentials of the proposed approach as compared with dynamic programming.

Finite dimensional guaranteed cost sampled-data fuzzy control for a class of nonlinear distributed parameter systems

In this paper, a finite dimensional guaranteed cost sampled-data fuzzy control (GCSDFC) problem is addressed for a class of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) systems. Initially, applying the Galerkin's method to the PDE system, a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) system is derived. The resulting nonlinear ODE system can accurately describe the dominant dynamics of the PDE system, which is subsequently expressed by the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. Then, a guaranteed cost sampled-data fuzzy controller is developed to stabilize exponentially the closed-loop slow fuzzy system while providing an upper bound for the quadratic cost function. A novel time-dependent functional is constructed to derive the condition for the existence of the proposed controller which is presented by bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs). Moreover, a suboptimal GCSDFC problem to minimize the cost bound can be formulated as a BMI optimization problem. A local optimization algorithm that views the BMI as a double linear matrix inequality (LMI) is given to solve this BMI optimization problem, in which a Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method is proposed to find an initially feasible solution for starting the algorithm. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed controller can ensure the exponential stability of the closed-loop PDE system. Finally, simulation results on the Fisher equation and the temperature profile of a catalytic rod show that the proposed design strategy is effective. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The aim of this paper is to study the estimation of unknown states and unknown input distribution functions for distributed parameter systems with discrete-time input–output data. First we construct finite dimensional discrete-time state observers to estimate unknown states and give the error estimates for distributed parameter systems with unknown inputs. Next we consider the determination of unknown input distribution functions using these estimated states. We discuss the relationship between observability and identifiability. The problem of determination of unknown functions is not well posed in general even if the distributed parameter systems are identifiable. We present and discuss a feasible approximation method by regularization which gives a constructive procedure to obtain approximately a true input distribution function. We also investigate limit properties of approximate solutions as the number of sampling periods tends to $ + \infty $.

Order reduction and control of hyperbolic, countercurrent distributed parameter systems using method of characteristics

The aim of this paper is to develop a model reduction technique based on method of characteristics (MOC) for control of counter-current distributed parameter systems that are modeled by semi-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (ROES). In our previous work, MOC was shown to be a suitable model reduction technique tot a class of hyperbolic PDEs. This concept is extended to counter-current systems, wherein the so-called characteristic lines have slopes with opposite signs. Two different approximations are proposed that allow the use of MOC as a model reduction technique. The open-loop results from MOC are compared with a large dimensional model, based on the method of lines. The MOC-based models are used for closed loop simulations within the approximate dynamic programming (ADP) framework. Two case studies are considered: a non-adiabatic plug flow reactor (having characteristics with two different slopes) and a non-adiabatic fixed bed reactor (having characteristics with three different slopes). We demonstrate that using the MOC-based model in an ADP controller results in a significant improvement in computational time, along with a slight improvement in controller performance.
