Spatiotemporally asynchronous sampled-data control of a linear parabolic PDE on a hypercube

This paper employs the observer-based output feedback control technique to deal with the problem of spatiotemporally asynchronous sampled-data control for a linear parabolic PDE on a hypercube. By the spatiotemporally asynchronous sampled-data observation outputs, an observer-based output feedback control law is constructed, where the sampling interval in time is bounded. By constructing an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional candidate and applying a weighted Poincare-Wirtinger inequality on a hypercube, it is shown under a sufficient condition presented in terms of standard linear matrix inequalities that the suggested spatiotemporally asynchronous sampled-data control law asymptotically stabilises the PDE in the spatial H-1(Omega) norm but its convergence speed can be regulated by a known constant. Moreover, both open-loop and closed-loop well-posedness analysis are done within the framework of C-0 semi-group. Finally, numerical simulation results are presented to support the proposed design method.

Stabilization Results for Well-Posed Potential Formulations of a Current-Controlled Piezoelectric Beam and Their Approximations

Hysteresis is highly undesired for the vibration control of piezoelectric beams especially in high-precision applications. Current-controlled piezoelectric beams cope with hysteresis substantially in comparison to the voltage-controlled counterparts. However, the existing low fidelity current-controlled beam models are finite dimensional, and they are either heuristic or mathematically over-simplified differential equations. In this paper, novel infinite-dimensional models, by a thorough variational approach, are introduced to describe vibrations on a piezoelectric beam. Electro-magnetic effects due to Maxwell's equations factor in the models via the electric and magnetic potentials. Both models are written in the standard state-space formulation (A, B, C), and are shown to be well-posed in the energy space by fixing the so-called Coulomb and Lorenz gauges. Different from the voltage-actuated counterparts, the control operatorBis compact in the energy space, i.e. the exponential stabilizability is not possible. Considering the compact C=B*-type state feedback controller (induced voltage), both models fail to be asymptotically stable if the material parameters satisfy certain conditions. To achieve at least asymptotic stability, we propose an additional controller. Finally, the stabilizability of infinite-dimensional electrostatic/quasi-static model (no magnetic effects) is analyzed for comparison. The biggest contrast is that the asymptotic stability is achieved by an electro-mechanical state feedback controller for all material parameters. Our findings are simulated by the filtered semi-discrete Finite Difference Method.

This paper addresses the distributed control by input-output linearization of a nonlinear diffusion equation that describes a particular but important class of distributed parameter systems. Both manipulated and controlled variables are assumed to be distributed in space. The control law is designed using the concept of characteristic index from geometric control by using directly the PDE model without any approximation or reduction. The main idea consists in the control design in assuming an equivalent linear diffusion equation obtained by use of the Cole-Hopf transformation. This framework helps to demonstrate the closed-loop stability using some concepts from the powerful semigroup theory. The performance of the proposed controller is successfully tested, through simulation, by considering a nonlinear heat conduction problem concerning the control of the temperature of a steel plate modeled by a nonlinear heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Robust State Estimation for Positive Real Infinite-Dimensional systems With Actuator and Sensor Faults

In this article, we propose a novel framework on the state estimation for a class of positive real infinite-dimensional systems, which suffer from unknown actuator and sensor faults and uncertain exogenous disturbance. Four cases of fault occurrence are taken into account: single multiplicative actuator fault, single multiplicative sensor fault, simultaneous actuator and sensor faults, and single actuator fault with a dead-zone nonlinearity. We develop new adaptive laws for the estimation of fault parameters and embed the proposed laws into the infinite dimensional state observer design. Moreover, by considering the actuator fault with a dead-zone nonlinearity, an infinite dimensional observer associated with coupled parameter update laws is developed to help to complete the fault accommodation. This is achieved by reconfiguring the actuator input based on the estimated information of parameters in the actuator fault map with a dead-zone nonlinearity.

Modeling and Vibration Control for a Moving Beam With Application in a Drilling Riser

In this brief, a boundary control scheme is designed to suppress the vibration for a nonlinear drilling riser system. Considering the varying length, varying tension, and varying speed of the riser, the drilling riser is modeled as a moving Euler-Bernoulli beam system, which is described by a partial differential equation and four ordinary differential equations. Employing the Lyapunov's direct method, boundary control is proposed to guarantee the closed-loop system being exponentially stable. Extensive numerical simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control law.

A semi-analytical dynamics method for spindle radial throw in boring process

In precision boring processing, accurate prediction of the radial throw of a boring tool spindle has critical significance for reducing machining errors. However, the classical dynamics method of radial throw based on the rigid body partition method ignores special characteristics of the boring tool spindle, resulting in additional errors regarding radial throw evaluation. Hence, a semi-analytical dynamics method considering the axial length, variable cross-section, and offset distance was proposed to decrease the computational error of the current dynamics model. The mechanism of radial throw was analyzed by the mechanics of materials and mathematical formulas. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and partial differential equation method were utilized to derive the dynamics model of the boring tool spindle, and an improved Galerkin variational algorithm was used to resolve the dynamics formulas for the radial throw. Then, the proposed dynamics method was compared with the noncontact displacement measurement and the traditional lumped mass parameter method. The validated results showed that the presented dynamics method had good agreement with the experimental data, and the maximum predictive error was 16.08 mu m lower based on the proposed method. Furthermore, the machining precision of holes was also clearly evaluated and discussed using the proposed dynamics method under different processing conditions, and the lower uncertainty of the proposed dynamics method was also demonstrated. As a result, the proposed semi-analytical dynamics method can accurately compute the radial throw and evaluate the machining error in boring technology.

Lyapunov approach for motion synchronization of a two-slider system

This paper focuses on a novel boundary control design for motion synchronization of a two-slider system. In this system, two sliders are constrained by a flexible beam. The de-synchronization of two sliders will result in the interaction between them. The interaction force is considered as shear force in this paper. Based on the shear force coupling, the system models are derived. In order to obtain an accurate representation, the flexible beam is derived as a distributed parameter system with one partial differential equation. Based on the proposed models, a Lyapunov approach is used to design the boundary control laws for two sliders to realize the synchronization motion. Simulations are provided to illustrated that the proposed method can effectively improve the sync motion performance compared with the cross-coupling method.

In this paper, we propose a non-linear control strategy for a robotic manipulator handling a flexible payload in the presence of input constraints and input disturbances, which does not require end-point boundary control. The dynamics of the system is described by coupled ordinary differential equation (ODE) and partial differential equation (PDE). Considering actuators saturation, hyperbolic tangent functions and secant functions are adopted to tackle the input constraints. Based on the disturbance observers, the control strategy can regulate the angular position and suppress the elastic vibration simultaneously. The asymptotic stability is proved by the LaSalle's invariance principle. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the validity of the direct joint control scheme.

This article addresses a control problem on air-conditioning systems in a room that is regarded as a control practice of nonlinear distributed parameter systems. Specifically, we consider designing a controller to suppress an oscillatory response of the in-room temperature field. The main idea of this article is to apply the emergent theory of the Koopman operator and Koopman mode decomposition (KMD) for nonlinear dynamical systems and to formulate a technique of damping assignment to a nonlinear Koopman mode in a fully data-driven manner. Its effectiveness is examined by numerical simulations of a simple 2-D problem guided by the measurement of practical room space. A finite-element commercial package is also used for validating the technique in a practical 3-D problem.

A minimax problem is introduced for the terminal control of a generic dynamical system without disturbances. The maximum magnitude of the weighted output of the system is minimized over a finite interval by the control input of a prescribed class. Such important characteristics of the controlled system appear explicitly in the proposed problem as the maximum magnitude and settling property of the output. Two numerical examples are shown to illustrate the problem. A slewing experiment is also presented to demonstrate the application of the minimax optimal control.
