Minimum time maneuver of flexible systems using pulse response based control

The pulse response based control method is applied to minimum time maneuver of flexible structures, When pulse response based control is applied to linear systems, a state-variable representation of the system is not needed, because system behavior is represented in terms of outputs resulting from pulses in control inputs, without modal truncation, However, for maneuver problems, nonlinear behavior associated with rapid large-angle rotation can be significant. A method is presented for taking nonlinear effects into account by explicitly modeling response in only the lowest few flexible modes and using the results to correct the measured pulse response upon which a minimum time control profile is based. A numerical example demonstrates that even for extremely rapid maneuver, nonlinear effects only need to be considered for a very small number of flexible modes, so that requirements for identification and computation are very low.

Adaptive Control of a Hose and Drogue system with Input Nonlinearities and Partial State Constraints

This paper proposes a novel multi-objective controller for the hose and drogue system, to address the input nonlinearities of dead-zone and constraint as well as partial state constraints. Based upon a smooth auxiliary function, a new dead-zone compensation method is developed to offset the unknown dead-zone nonlinearity, and the obtained controller can also deal with the input constraint by employing the Nussbaum-function-based method. Subsequently, based upon a new barrier Lyapunov function and the parameter projection method, the proposed controller can enforce the partial state constraints in the presence of the partial differential characteristics of the hose and drogue system. A simulation example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Integrated controls-structures design methodology: Redesign of an evolutionary test structure

An optimization-based integrated controls-structures design methodology for a class of flexible space structures is described, and the phase-0 controls-structures-integration evolutionary model, a laboratory testbed at NASA Langley, is redesigned using this integrated design methodology. The integrated controls-structures design is posed as a nonlinear programming problem to minimize the control effort required to maintain a specified line-of-sight pointing performance, under persistent white noise disturbance. Static and dynamic dissipative control strategies are employed for feedback control, and parameters of these controllers are considered as the control design variables. Sizes of strut elements in various sections of the controls-structures-integration evolutionary model are used as the structural design variables. Design guides for the struts are developed and employed in the integrated design process to ensure that the redesigned structure can be effectively fabricated. The superiority of the integrated design methodology over the conventional design approach is demonstrated analytically by observing a significant reduction in the average control power needed to maintain specified pointing performance with the integrated design approach.

FEEDBACK GAIN SENSITIVITIES OF CLOSED-LOOP MODAL parameterS OF CONTROLLED STRUCTURES

Computer algebra (MACSYMA) has been used to derive the characteristic polynomials that determine the closed-loop frequencies and damping coefficients of output-feedback controlled structures. These expressions show explicitly bow the locations of the actuator/sensor pairs and the displacement and velocity feedback gains influence the frequencies and damping parameters of the dosed-loop system modes. For lightly coupled modes, simple relations are obtained between the modal parameters and the coordinates of the sensor/actuator pairs as well as the displacement and velocity feedback gains. Using the example of a cantilevered uniform beam controlled by a single sensor/actuator pair, numerical results are used to illustrate the sensitivity of the closed-loop modal parameters to the placement of the sensor/actuator pair as well as the feedback gains. Such results help answer questions about optimal placement of sensor/actuator pairs for the active control of a flexible structure.

The paper describes a new method for detecting and locating leaks in long pipelines, based on an extended Kalman filter for the nonlinear distributed parameter (DP) system representing gas flow in pipes. Artificial leak states at predefined positions along the pipeline are included in the filter model, and relationships to estimate the actual leak position are derived. Simulation results are presented to assess the method.

Electrolyte depletion control laws for lead-acid battery discharge optimisation

The technique described in this paper balances the power and energy withdrawn from a battery in galvanostatic discharge control that aims for stabilisation of the electrolyte concentration above the depletion level. This aim is achieved with relatively simple proportional feedback controls that are exponentially stabilising controls for a simple diffusion process that is the core part of battery processes. Although the full mapping of the proposed controls to state is rather complex, it has shown that the transformation works. In practice, these controls can be approximated either with the integrated past controls or with a simple exponential function that depends on a few parameters adjusted to the electrochemical processes in a battery under consideration. The battery control is tested in simulation on a detailed model developed for a lead-acid electrochemical cell. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Inverse Calculation of Burden Distribution Matrix Using B-Spline Model Based PDF Control in Blast Furnace Burden Charging Process

The inverse calculation of burden distribution matrix (BDM) is one of the most important challenges in the blast furnace operation in iron-making processes. In general, blast furnace consumes 65% of the total energy for the whole steel-making. Focusing on this practical challenge, this article proposes a new burden distribution spatial model in calculating burden charging process, and develops a B-spline approximation-based probability density function (PDF) control algorithm to assign the expected thickness distribution of burden layer and, thus, develops a new method for the required inverse calculation of BDM. First, a novel method for the thickness distribution of burden layer is given using B-spline model to produce an expected distribution shape subjected to a desired tracking within a specific spatial constraint. Then, according to the coexistence of continuous and bounded discrete variables in BDM, a novel hybrid optimization control method by combining integer programming and PDF tracking is further established for the effective inverse calculation of BDM. Finally, the proposed PDF-based iterative inverse calculation of BDM using B-spline models are tested using various data from industrial examples. The simulation results show that the proposed method is well suited to solve the BDM inverse calculation problem in practice.

Control of the temperature distribution in two dimensional space of an annular type non-isothermal adsorber

A new annular-type non-isothermal adsorber is proposed, which makes it possible to separate a multi-components gas mixture continuously. For the effective operation of the adsorber, it is essential to control the temperature distribution in the two dimensional space (axial and angular direction) of the adsorber. In this work, the controller design is based on a method reducing distributed parameter system (DPS) to lumped parameter system (LPS) through the eigenfunction expansion. The advantage of this method is that the design of the feedback controller is very simple because the reduced LPS model is completely decoupled. The results show that the whole temperature distribution in the adsorber is estimated accurately from several measurements by using the Kalman filter as an observer. The designed servo controllers' performances are satisfactory in spite of using the reduced order LPS model. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Boundary Arc and Boundary Point Stabilization of Reaction-Diffusion Equations on the Unit Disk

The uncontrolled diffusion equation on the unit disk under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions is only neutrally stable as zero is an eigenvalue. If we add linear reaction terms the resulting equation can be unstable. To stabilize such a reaction-diffusion equation to a uniform state which we conveniently take to be zero, we pose and solve a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). We consider two types of control actuation, boundary arc control and boundary point control. With boundary arc control we assume that there are m arcs on the boundary of the disk and we can control the time varying flux to be spatially constant across each arc so the control is m dimensional. Boundary point control is the idealized limit of boundary arc control as the length of each arc shrinks to zero but the gain factor multiplying the control inversely goes to infinity. For each type of actuation we derive a Riccati PDE whose solution is the Fredholm kernel of the optimal cost of the LQR. We also compute the Fredholm kernel of the corresponding optimal feedback and the first few closed loop eigenvalues. We show that optimal feedback moves the neutrally stable eigenvalue into the open left half plane but has little effect on the other eigenvalues as they are already sufficiently stable. We also show how a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation can be stabilized by nonLinear nonQuadatic Regulation (nLnQR) which is an extension of Al'brekht's method to nonlinear distributed parameter systems. We close with an example of how a distributed predator prey system can be stabilized to its equilibrium point. We show that two unilateral controls (controls that can only take nonpositive values) can be almost as stabilizing as one bilateral control (control that can take on both positive and negative values). © 1963-2012 IEEE.
