Monitoring an Advection-Diffusion Process Using Aerial Mobile Sensors

A path planning framework for regional surveillance of a planar advection-diffusion process by aerial mobile sensors is proposed. The goal of the path planning is to produce feasible and collision-free trajectories for a set of aerial mobile sensors that minimize some uncertainty measure of the process under observation. The problem is formulated as a dynamic optimization problem and discretized into a large-scale nonlinear programming (NLP) problem using the Petrov-Galerkin finite element method in space and simultaneous collocation in time. Receding horizon optimization problems are solved in simulations with an advection-dominated ice concentration field. Simulations illustrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

Vibration Control of a Flexible String With Both Boundary Input and Output Constraints

This paper investigates control design for a flexible string system with both boundary input and output constraints. Dynamics of the string system are represented as a homogeneous partial differential equation describing the vibrations of the system. First, model-based boundary control is proposed by employing an auxiliary system for handling the input saturation and an integral barrier Lyapunov function for eliminating the effect of output constraint. The exponential stability is achieved through rigorous analysis without any simplification of the dynamics. Subsequently, because the system parameters are unknown, adaptive boundary feedback control is proposed and uniform ultimate boundedness is guaranteed. Finally, the simulation results are provided for demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed control, where all the signals in the control inputs can be measured using the most common sensors.

Control of spatially distributed processes with unknown transport-reaction parameters via two layer system adaptations

The control problem of dissipative distributed parameter systems described by semilinear parabolic partial differential equations with unknown parameters and its application to transport-reaction chemical processes is considered. The infinite dimensional modal representation of such systems can be partitioned into finite dimensional slow and infinite dimensional fast and stable subsystems. A combination of a model order reduction approach and a Lyapunov-based adaptive control technique is used to address the control issues in the presence of unknown parameters of the system. Galerkin's method is used to reduce the infinite dimensional description of the system;we apply adaptive proper orthogonal decomposition (APOD) to initiate and recursively revise the set of empirical basis functions needed in Galerkin's method to construct switching reduced order models. The effectiveness of the proposed APOD-based adaptive control approach is successfully illustrated on temperature regulation in a catalytic chemical reactor in the presence of unknown transport and reaction parameters. Data and event-driven control of a class of networked non-linear control systems

In this study, the authors develop a data and event-driven control scheme that combines data and event-driven control methods, for a class of networked non-linear control systems, which consist of a remote controller and a local non-linear control system. The plant in the local non-linear control system has an unknown dynamic model. They apply a data-based method to design and adjust the feedback gain matrix for the plant, whose desired outputs are given by the remote controller. This method has advantages of both data and event-driven control methods. Moreover, the proposed scheme provides an alternative option to realise remote control, when the dynamic model of the plant is unknown. They then present theoretical analysis on the convergence condition and a computer simulation example to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed control scheme.

In this article, the semi-group theory is exploited to study the controllability of a particular but important class of distributed parameter systems with a uniform distributed control variable. This class is described by a partial differential equation that characterizes the nonlinear diffusion phenomenon. The main idea consists of using the Cole-Hopf tangent transformation, under some assumptions, in order to derive an equivalent linear model of the nonlinear diffusion system. Then, the study of the controllability of the linear model, based on the semi-group approach, allows us to conclude about the controllability of the nonlinear diffusion system. The study is illustrated by an application example.

Analysis of flow control by boundary-layer manipulation using 2D frequency response

Flow control is the manipulation of fluid flow into a desired behaviour with the purpose to either enhance mixing or suppress turbulence. However, because all flow systems are essentially distributed parameter systems, which are often described as partial differential equations, systematic analysis of the effectiveness and control design of the flow control is often difficult to perform. Oscillatory flows have the potential to enhance mixing by providing high-amplitude shear oscillations. For example, oscillating electro-osmotic flow caused by an externally induced electric field can be applied to membrane systems to reduce polarisation or fouling. Therefore, an approach that can model and analyse the relationship between oscillatory flows and the resulting mixing enhancement is needed. This paper proposes an approach that systematically analyses the effects of external inputs, which vary in both spatial and temporal directions, on the mixing enhancement in channel flows. A two-dimensional (2D) frequency response is obtained from the reduced-order model of the Navier-Stokes equations. The 2D frequency response describes the system behaviour at different frequencies and wavenumber. The analysis results are useful for system and control design, e.g. in identifying the locations to install actuators and sensors, which is often very difficult for distributed parameter systems. Vehicle density estimation of freeway traffic with unknown boundary demand-supply: an interacting multiple model approach

As distributed parameter systems, dynamics of freeway traffic are dominated by the current traffic parameter and boundary fluxes from upstream/downstream sections or on/off ramps. The difference between traffic demand-supply and boundary fluxes actually reflects the congestion level of freeway travel. This study investigates simultaneous traffic density and boundary flux estimation with data extracted from on-road detectors. The existing studies for traffic estimation mainly focus on the traffic parameters (density, velocity etc.) of mainline traffic and ignore flux fluctuations at boundary sections of the freeway. The authors propose a stochastic hybrid traffic flow model by extending the cell transmission model with Markovian multi-mode switching. A novel interacting multiple model filtering for simultaneous input and state estimation is developed for discrete-time Markovian switching systems with unknown input. A freeway segment of Interstate 80 East (I-80E) in Berkeley, Northern California, is chosen to investigate the performance of the developed approach. Traffic data is obtained from the performance measurement system.

Boundary output feedback control of a flexible string system with input saturation

In this paper, we consider the control problem of a flexible string system in the presence of input saturation. The dynamics of the string system is represented by the coupled partial differential equation and ordinary differential equations. Firstly, in order to suppress the transverse vibration of the flexible string system, full state feedback control is proposed by introducing a well-defined integral Lyapunov function. An auxiliary system is introduced to handle the effect of input saturation, and the proof for the existence and the uniqueness of the solution of the closed-loop system is presented. The exponential stability is achieved through rigorous analysis without any simplification of the dynamics. Subsequently, for the case that some of system states cannot be directly obtained, output feedback control is developed and uniform ultimate boundedness is guaranteed. Finally, the results are illustrated with numerical simulations for verifying the control performance.

This paper considers the multi-level approximation of controllers for partial differential equations. First, assuming that the full state is available, an optimal controller based on a finite horizon Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) design is computed. Assuming that the feedback operator admits a time varying feedback kernel, the first level approximation provides a means to replace the requirement of full state knowledge by the knowledge of the state at the single spatial location that best approximates the kernel by a delta function. This then replaces the full state feedback by a static output feedback that is simultaneously approximating the full state controller and is providing the optimal sensor location. The second level approximation produces the static gain that is needed to multiply the state evaluated at the approximating spatial sensor location. Since the feedback gain is time varying, this two-level approximation is applied at each time instant thus rendering the sensor mobile and the static gain adaptive. Algorithms for PDEs in one and two spatial dimensions are provided along with numerical studies that compare the full-state optimal controllers with the suboptimal static output feedback controllers with mobile sensor.

The sliding mode control (SMC) problems are researched for a class of interval distributed parameter systems with time-delay. Firstly, this system is represented in the distributed parameter systems with parameter uncertainty, and a sufficient condition for robust asymptotically stable is obtained for the sliding mode by constructing Lyapunov functions, employing linear matrix inequality (LMI). Secondly, a variable structure control (VSC) law is designed, and, the time estimation is given on starting from the initial position of any sate trajectory curve to arrive sliding-model area. Finally, a numerical example is given, and the feasibility and effectiveness of this method is explained.
