Dynamical modeling for electric hot water tanks

To quantify the potential of electric hot water tanks (EHWT) in general demand response programs, there is a need for models with prediction capabilities at a reasonable computational cost. As can be experimentally observed, the input-output response of EHWT is relatively complex. This paper presents two models of EHWT, one in the form of two simple one-dimensional partial differential equations and the other as a hybrid system decoupling the phenomena acting on the EHWT, in sequences. An experimental validation compares the performance of these models. The conclusion is that the hybrid model is more accurate and less computationally intensive. © 2015

The basis for the design of real-time capable control and state estimation strategies for mechanical systems with distributed parameters is the derivation of suitable system models. These models lead to state-space representations that are, on the one hand, sufficiently accurate to capture the dominant features of the system dynamics. On the other hand, the dimensionality of these models has to be limited to a reasonable size to make sure that the resulting control and state estimation approaches can be implemented in real time. Therefore, a huge amount of work has been performed in recent years which is related to early lumping techniques. By using these techniques, the governing partial differential equations are replaced by sets of ordinary differential equations before the control and estimator design is performed. In this paper, both local and global approximations of the system dynamics are compared in simulations. These approximations are determined either by using a finite element representation that is based on the Method of Integrodifferential Relations (MIDR) or, alternatively, by a global Ritz ansatz. Especially the MIDR approach allows for the derivation of system models which exactly fulfill energy conservation laws as well as boundary and inter-element conditions. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Finite dimensional adaptive H_(infinity) control for distributed parameter systems of hyperbolic type preceded by input nonlinearities such as dead-zone or backlash, is considered in this paper. distributed parameter systems are infinite dimensional processes, but the proposed control scheme is constructed from finite dimensional controllers. An adaptive inverse model is introduced to estimate and compensate the input nonlinearity. The stabilizing control signal is added to regulate the effect of spill-over terms, and it is derived as a solution of certain H_(infinity) control problem where the residual part of the inverse model and the spill-over term are regarded as external disturbances to the process.

Many rods exhibit a coupling effect between axial and transversal displacements. Additional forces may be caused by a superimposed axial motion of the rod. We explore how these effects can be mathematically modeled using a rod with two local degrees of freedom. The resulting geometrically nonlinear model can be reduced to a system with just one local degree of freedom, i. e., the transverse displacement. These models are compared to commonly used modeling strategies where the rod is given just one local degree of freedom right at the beginning. One of the most important problems for the study of singular distributed parameter systems is the well-posedness. Not only is it very important for the study of stability of singular distributed parameter systems, but also it is the theoretic basis for the study of the related problem of optimal control. In this paper, the concepts and the properties of generalized operator semigroup(GOS) and generalized integral semigroup(GIS) are given in Hilbert space, the solving problem of the non-homogeneous singular distributed parameter system is discussed by the concepts and the properties of GOS and GIS in Hilbert space, and some important results of the two classes of singular distributed parameter systems are given.

Symbiogenesis and synthetic evolutionary theory: The third synthesis

Integration of the concepts of symbiogenesis and synthetic evolutionary theory is the main path for the development of evolutionary biology. It is based on the analysis of cooperative adaptations that evolve under the impacts of symbiotic-specific selective pressures responsible for the formation of super-species hereditary systems - metagenomes, symbiogenomes, and hologenomes. The genetic integration of nonrelated organisms (symbiogenesis) is determined by the inheritance of microsymbionts by hosts resulted in the complication of mutualistic interactions according to the scheme: pleiotropic symbiosis -> mutual partner's exploitation -> interspecies altruism. This evolution may result in the loss of genetic individuality in microsymbionts;this loss is expressed as a deep reduction in their genomes. A significant number of the microbial genes may be exported to the host, resulting in the transformation of symbiotic systems into novel, genetically integral organisms.

Finite segment model complexity of an Euler-Bernoulli beam

A common approach for modeling the dynamic behavior of distributed parameter systems is the approximation through finite-segment models. These models are able to accurately predict the dynamic behavior of the system given that "adequate" segments are included in the model. Frequency-based methodologies can be used to address the complexity of such models. The purpose of the current work is to address the complexity of distributed parameter using the previously developed activity metric. More specifically the complexity of an Euler-Bernoulli beam model is considered. Bond graph models of this system already exist in the literature and the objective is to identify the necessary complexity (number of segments). A new modeling procedure is proposed for this type of systems where the model starts from simple and the number of segments is increased until an activity based criterion is satisfied. An illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of this methodology. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An analytical summary of author's research in the mathematical modeling of the dynamics of linear spatially distributed systems under limited information about their initial-boundary-value state is presented. The solutions to problems of control of such systems using an arbitrary combination of external-dynamic disturbing factors are given. The problems are solved for continuously and discretely defined observations of the initial-boundary-value disturbances of the system and its desired state.

Nonlinear drifting parameters tracking by means of factorized Zakai filter in boundary-controlled electrodeposition process

The Zakai filtering is applied for tracking of nonlinear time-varying parameters on a physical model describing typical electrodeposition process that is fixed on the bulk solution boundary of diffusion layer and is observed-controlled on the electrode surface. The applied boundary control depends on the unknown drifting parameters in a severely nonlinear relationship. A computational algorithm is proposed for drifting parameters estimation based on the factorized Zakai filter. The consistency of estimates is analyzed in simulation on the diffusion type model developed for the copper electrodeposition process © 2015
