The problem of mobile sensors for effective state reconstruction of spatially varying processes is considered. The optimal approach for integrated state estimation and mobile sensor guidance suffers from heavy computational requirements of differential Riccati equations. While the filter covariance in such a case is propagated forward in time, the sensor guidance scheme must be integrated backwards in time resulting in an open-loop policy. As a consequence, a closed-loop approach that is at the same time computationally tractable is favored. Two schemes for the concurrent computation of filter gains and mobile sensor guidance are proposed and are based on significantly reduced computational requirements, favorably leading to real-time implementable estimation schemes. Using gradient-ascent schemes, the combined estimator-plus-guidance schemes reposition the sensor to spatial regions of more useful information;these comprise regions with larger estimation errors. Numerical implementation of both proposed designs are applied to a one-dimensional diffusion equation with a single mobile sensor.

The basis for the design of real-time capable control and state estimation strategies for mechanical systems with distributed parameters is the derivation of suitable system models. These models lead to state-space representations that are, on the one hand, sufficiently accurate to capture the dominant Features oft, he system dynamics. On the other baud, the dimensionality of these models has to be limited to a reasonable size to make sure that the resulting control and state estimation approaches can be implemented in real time. Therefore, a huge amount of work has been performed in recent, years which is related to early lumping techniques. By using these techniques, the governing partial differential equations are replaced by sets of ordinary differential equations before the control and estimator design is performed. In this paper, both local and global approximation of the system dynamics are compared in simulations These approximation are determined either by using a finite element, representation that, is based on the Method of Integrodifferential Relations (MIDR) or, alternatively, by a global Ritz ansatz. Especially the MIDR approach allows for the derivation of system models which exactly fulfill energy conservation laws as well as boundary and inter-element conditions. This paper develops a neuro-dynamic programming (NDP) based near optimal boundary control of distributed parameter systems (DPS) governed by linear one-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations (PDE) under Dirichlet boundary control condition. The structure of the optimal cost functional is defined as an extension of its definition from lumped parameter systems (LPS) but for the infinite dimensional state space. Subsequently, the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is formulated in the infinite dimensional domain without using any model reduction. Since solving the HJB equation for the exact optimal value functional is burdensome, a radial basis function network (RBF) is subsequently proposed to achieve a computationally feasible solution online and in a forward-in time manner. The optimal value functional is tuned by using conventional adaptive laws such that the HJB equation error is minimized and accordingly the optimal control policy is derived. Ultimate boundedness (UB) of the closed-loop system is verified by using the Lyapunov theory. The performance of proposed controller is successfully verified on an unstable diffusion reaction process.

Pollution of groundwater requires appropriate technical solutions which can be deployed for remediation. For as much as the local groundwater contamination and its subsequent spread may result in contamination of drinking water resources or other disasters. This publication aims to design and demonstrate a model task of groundwater remediation process as distributed parameter system. The model problem consists of appropriately spaced soil region with water flow and transport of pollution which are modelled in the program MODFLOW and MT3DMS. Actuating quantities are generated by pumping wells. Control problem solution is supported by DPS Blockset for MATLAB & Simulink.

This paper investigates the vibration control of an Euler-Bernoulli Beam with nonlinear backlash input. Based on the dynamical model of the flexible beam, the boundary control law and the disturbance observer are designed to suppress the vibration of the system and reduce the effect of the backlash. The stability of the closed-loop system is proved and the uniform boundness of the states of the system is achieved. The proposed boundary control with appropriate parameters is proved to be effective by the performance of numerical simulations of the flexible beam system.

In recent years the interest in control of distributed parameter systems (DPSs) has significantly increased in the chemical and advanced material process industries. This is due to the need to synthesize control structures for complex transport-reaction processes which are characterized by the coupling of chemical reactions with significant convection, diffusion, and dispersion phenomena. Such processes as exemplified by packed and fluidized bed reactors in chemical plants, reactive distillation in petrochemical industries processes, most lithographic and deposition processes in microelectronics and advanced materials manufacturing, and finally crystal and glass production, exhibit spatial variations that need to be explicitly accounted for by the *** important observation is that the long term behavior of the above chemical processes can be captured by a finite number of degrees of freedom; thus the partial differential equation (PDE) descriptions can be effectively approximated by reduced order models (ROMs) in the form of finite dimensional ordinary differential equations (ODEs). For processes with nonlinear spatial operators and/or complex process domains, the ODEs can only be obtained via data-driven order reduction methods. Their major shortcoming is that they require a representative ensemble of solutions pre-exists for the process to be properly described, while there isn't a systematic method to ensure this important prerequisite. Currently, there is a lack of systematic and computationally-efficient data-driven methodologies for optimization and control of nonlinear PDE systems with complex spatial *** proposed research will extend the applicability of control-oriented data-driven nonlinear order reduction methods for dissipative nonlinear PDE systems. This work considers the synchronization of interconnected second order infinite dimensional systems. An output feedback based synchronization controller is designed in order to enhance a measure of synchronization amongst the infinite dimensional systems and when using the aggregate form of the networked systems, the choice of the optimal gains in the synchronization controllers reduces to the optimization of an associated quadratic index. A desynchronization action which takes the form of severing a link between any two connected systems is interpreted as a benign action which results in a delayed synchronization or convergence of the synchronization measure to a nonzero value. When the desynchronization action takes the form of sign reversal of a link between two connected systems, it is interpreted as a malicious adversarial action and which results in destabilization of the networked systems with an unbounded synchronization measure. The desynchronization action is viewed as a fault occurring in the networked system and an adaptive scheme is thus used to monitor these interconnected systems in order to detect the presence of the desynchronization action. In order to maintain the synchronization of the interconnected systems, an adaptive fault accommodating scheme is proposed which takes the form of control reconfiguration and which ensures the resynchronization of the interconnected systems. Both finite and infinite second order systems are considered and a numerical example with four interconnected cable PDEs is included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the desynchronization monitoring scheme and the subsequent resynchronization policy.

This paper presents a uniform, port-based approach for modeling of both lumped and distributed parameter systems. Port-based model of the distributed system has been defined by application of bond graph methodology and distributed transfer function method (DTFM). The proposed approach combines versatility of port-based modeling and accuracy of distributed transfer function method. A concise representation of lumped-distributed systems has been obtained. The proposed method of modeling enables to formulate input data for computer analysis by application of DTFM.

The paper is concerned with an alternative method in addressing the effects of spatiotemporally varying disturbances in controlling spatially distributed systems. Use of robust control schemes for controlling partial differential equations may not provide acceptable controller authority in handling "moving" disturbances. A way to handle such a case is to consider the use of mobile actuators. In this work, we consider a class of spatially distributed systems which employ a collocated actuator/sensor pair. By using the a priori defined structure of static output feedback, the problem then remains that of determining the spatial repositioning of the actuatro/sensor pair throughout the spatial domain. Using energy-based methods based on the state norm of the spatially distributed system, two guidance policies associated with two different actuator distribution functions are developed. Simulation results for a 1D diffusion equation with a "moving" disturbance are included to provide some insight on the effective handling of such moving disturbances via mobile actuator/sensor pairs.
