In this work a modeling approach is introduced for the dispersion of motorway traffic emissions. The process model is developed for a distributed parameter system, and is derived based on the conservation law within the balance volumes between the road and the rural area, specified by the wind direction. Parallel to the wind, plug flow is considered, and for the absorption of pollution a simplified version of the Gaussian plume model is used. For the boundary conditions of the model, the output of the macroscopic emission model, introduced in [Csikos et al. (2012)] is substituted. A sensitivity analysis is performed on the proposed model which justifies the preconception on the future control system structure.

Effective thermal management is crucial to the optimal operation of lithium ion batteries and its health management. However, the thermal behaviors of batteries are governed by complex chemical process whose parameters will degrade over time and different environment. Furthermore, limited sensors exist for measurement of the spatiotemporal thermal process. In this paper, an intelligent model for online estimation of the temperature distribution in lithium ion battery systems is proposed. Due to the difficulty and high cost to identify the online operational model directly from practical experiment measurement, an integrated approach is developed to derive the approximate analytical model through hierarchical modeling from experiment, simulation, and intelligent learning. The proposed model could be easily added to the existing battery management system.

We consider the output regulation problem for a special class of nonlinear distributed parameter systems (NLDPS). The main goal of this work is to show that the geometric theory of nonlinear output regulation, which has been extensively developed for lumped nonlinear systems, can be extended in a local setting to this class of NLDPS. Our approach is geometric, based on the center manifold theorem. Even for local problems, however, one must surmount technical issues that inevitably arise in the infinite dimensional setting. In this paper, we describe a particular class of nonlinear systems and exogenous systems for which center manifold methods can be used to obtain state feedback control laws for solving problems of tracking and disturbance attenuation. We also give a numerical example of set-point control for a controlled Chafee-Infante diffusion reaction equation which involves the consideration of a bounded input operator and an unbounded (point evaluation) output operator.

This paper addresses designing finite dimensional linear time invariant (LTI) controllers for infinite dimensional LTI plants subject to H ¿ mixed-sensitivity performance objectives and convex constraints. Specifically, we focus on designing control systems for two classes of systems which are generally described by hyperbolic partial differential equations: (1) irrigation systems and (2) hypersonic vehicles with flexible dynamics. The distributed parameter plant is first approximated by a finite dimensional approximant. The Youla parameterization is then used to parameterize the set of all stabilizing LTI controllers and a weighted mixed-sensitivity H ¿ optimization is formulated. After transforming the infinite dimensional problem to a finite-dimensional optimization problem, convex is optimization is used to obtain the solution. Subgradient concepts are used to directly accommodate time domain specifications. Illustrative examples for irrigation systems and hypersonic vehicles are provided.

This paper proposes a scheme for the guidance of a moving collocated sensor/actuator pair for the performance enhancement of a class of spatially distributed processes. It is assumed that a spatially moving source forces the process state to deviate from its equilibrium throughout the spatial domain. Such a configuration minimizes the control effectiveness of a fixed-in-space sensor/actuator pair. To minimize the effects of the moving source on the state regulation, it is assumed that a locally distributed sensor, capable of moving within the spatial domain with a prescribed velocity can also provide locally distributed actuator. Such a pair utilizes locally distributed state information in order to generate the control signal, which takes the form of a locally distributed static output feedback. At a given time interval, the maximum deviation of the spatially localized state from the equilibrium is used to guide the sensor/actuator pair to the next position and at the same time provide a simplified static output feedback controller in order to improve performance. As an extension, a time varying scalar gain is proposed which is updated adaptively, according to the distributed state deviation. Extensive simulation studies applied to a diffusion-advection system are included to verify the effectiveness of a such a moving actuator/sensor pair.

The feedback control problem for the parabolic distributed parameter systems without or with time-delay are investigated. The system model contains convection terms. Firstly, the feedback control law is designed for a class of the parabolic distributed parameter systems without time delay. Then this result is extended to the case with time delay and the feedback control law is designed for a class of the parabolic distributed parameter systems with time delay. At last, the simulation examples are presented to illustrate effectiveness of the proposed methods.

In the current work we present an integrated actuator placement and fault tolerant controller design based on the concept of spatial H_(2) norm and combined with a fault tolerant controller design concepts for DPS presented in earlier work by the authors. Specifically, a nonlinear optimization problem is formulated to identify and rank spatially independent actuator groups that may control a distributed process with minimal actuator power. The optimization problem is based on the concept of the spatial H_(2) norm and guarantees a minimum amount of controllability for each group. The augmented fault monitoring scheme employs a time varying threshold in order to minimize detection time, and the fault accommodating scheme simply switches off the faulty actuator and activates a healthy group without reconfiguring the control signal, as the latter by design is the same for all possible actuator groups. The simplicity of the proposed methodology lies in the unique property of transport reaction processes that properly chosen actuators at physically different locations have an identical effect on the system long term behavior.

This paper is concerned with the problem of robustly stochastically exponential stability and stabilization for a class of distributed parameter systems described by uncertain linear first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (FOHPDEs) with Markov jumping parameters, for which the manipulated input is distributed in space. Based on an integral-type stochastic Lyapunov functional (ISLF), the sufficient condition of robustly stochastically exponential stability with a given decay rate is first derived in terms of spatial differential linear matrix inequalities (SDLMIs). Then, an SDLMI approach to the design of robust stabilizing controllers via state feedback is developed from the resulting stability condition. Furthermore, using the finite difference method and the standard linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization techniques, recursive LMI algorithms for solving the SDLMIs in the analysis and synthesis are provided. Boundary control of a rotating shear beam with observer feedback

We consider a flexible structure modeled as a shear beam which is free to rotate on the horizontal plane. We first model the system by using partial differential equations and we propose boundary feedback laws to achieve set-point regulation of the rotation angle as well as to suppress elastic vibrations. The main advantage of the proposed design, which consists of a decoupling controller together with an observer, is that it is easy to implement. We utilize a coordinate transformation based on an invertible integral transformation by using Volterra form and backstepping techniques. We show that with the proposed controller, the control objectives are satisfied.

The objective of the present work is to propose an output-feedback control scheme for a wastewater treatment biofilter, in order to regulate the outlet concentrations of nitrate and nitrite below a prescribed level (in accordance with the norms). The nitrification-denitrification biofilter is described by a set of mass balance partial differential equations (PDEs), of hyperbolic or parabolic type, depending on the consideration of diffusion/dispersion phenomena. The design of the output-feedback control strategy follows a late lumping approach, in which the PDE system is considered, and descretized only at a later stage for implementation purposes. This strategy is based on feedback linearization and requires a state estimator, which takes the form of a distributed parameter Luenberger observer. A point of particular attention is the formulation of the model boundary conditions, from the classical Dankwerts conditions to more advanced formulations including dynamic boundary conditions, which has a significant influence on the control performance. The control strategy is tested against model uncertainties and measurement noise in simulation. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
