The feedback control problem for the parabolic distributed parameter systems without or with time-delay are investigated. The system model contains convection terms. Firstly, the feedback control law is designed for a class of the parabolic distributed parameter systems without time delay. Then this result is extended to the case with time delay and the feedback control law is designed for a class of the parabolic distributed parameter systems with time delay. At last, the simulation examples are presented to illustrate effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Stochastically exponential stability and stabilization of uncertain linear hyperbolic PDE systems with Markov jumping parameters

This paper is concerned with the problem of robustly stochastically exponential stability and stabilization for a class of distributed parameter systems described by uncertain linear first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (FOHPDEs) with Markov jumping parameters, for which the manipulated input is distributed in space. Based on an integral-type stochastic Lyapunov functional (ISLF), the sufficient condition of robustly stochastically exponential stability with a given decay rate is first derived in terms of spatial differential linear matrix inequalities (SDLMIs). Then, an SDLMI approach to the design of robust stabilizing controllers via state feedback is developed from the resulting stability condition. Furthermore, using the finite difference method and the standard linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization techniques, recursive LMI algorithms for solving the SDLMIs in the analysis and synthesis are provided. Finally, a simulation example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed design method. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Boundary control of a rotating shear beam with observer feedback

We consider a flexible structure modeled as a shear beam which is free to rotate on the horizontal plane. We first model the system by using partial differential equations and we propose boundary feedback laws to achieve set-point regulation of the rotation angle as well as to suppress elastic vibrations. The main advantage of the proposed design, which consists of a decoupling controller together with an observer, is that it is easy to implement. We utilize a coordinate transformation based on an invertible integral transformation by using Volterra form and backstepping techniques. We show that with the proposed controller, the control objectives are satisfied.

Modeling and control of Transparent Conducting Oxide layer surface morphology for improved light trapping

This work first introduces a kinetic Monte-Carlo simulation model for a two species thin film deposition process and demonstrates the use of feedback control, coupled with a suitable actuator design, in manufacturing thin films whose surface morphology has a structure that improves light trapping. This work is relevant in the context of a Transparent Conducting Oxide (TCO) thin film layer manufacturing used in thin film solar cells where it is desirable to produce thin films with precisely tailored surface morphology. Specifically, a two species thin film deposition process involving atom adsorption, surface relaxation and surface migration is initially considered and is modeled using a large-lattice (lattice size=40,000) kinetic Monte-Carlo simulation. Subsequently, thin film surface morphology characteristics like roughness and slope are computed with respect to different characteristic length scales ranging from atomic to the ones corresponding to visible light wavelength and it is found that a patterned actuator design is needed to induce thin film surface roughness and slope at visible light wavelength spatial scales, that lead to desired thin film solar cell performance. Then, an Edwards-Wilkinson type equation is used to model the surface evolution at the visible light wavelength spatial scale and form the basis for the design of a predictive feedback controller whose objective is to manipulate the deposition rate across the spatial domain of the process. The model parameters of the Edwards-Wilkinson equation are estimated from kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations and their dependence on the deposition rate is used in the formulation of the predictive controller to predict the influence of the control action on the surface roughness and slope throughout the thin film growth process. Enforcing Consensus on Adaptive parameter Estimation of Structurally Perturbed Infinite Dimensional systems

The aim of this note is to investigate the agreement between state and parameter estimates for a class of infinite dimensional systems that utilize distributed adaptive filters. It is assumed that the unknown parameters take the form of a structured perturbation with an unknown constant parameter, and the nominal system satisfies an infinite dimensional analog of positive real lemma. The proposed adaptive observers generated by agents follow the structure of adaptive identifiers for infinite dimensional systems with the added feature of a penalty term in both the state and parameter estimates. Unlike earlier efforts, the proposed adaptive laws include a penalty term of the mismatch between the parameter estimates generated by the other agents. Conditions that provide uniform boundedness of the estimator dynamics and the parameter estimates are examined. Additionally, the effects of these modifications on the agreement amongst the state and parameter estimates are studied. The convergence of the deviation from the mean estimate is established as a metric for the performance of the consensus filters for both state and parameter estimates. The effects of the proposed consensus enforcement are illustrated with a diffusion partial differential equation example, which yield convincing numerical findings.

Observer-based output feedback linearizing control strategy for a nitrification-denitrification biofilter

The objective of the present work is to propose an output-feedback control scheme for a wastewater treatment biofilter, in order to regulate the outlet concentrations of nitrate and nitrite below a prescribed level (in accordance with the norms). The nitrification-denitrification biofilter is described by a set of mass balance partial differential equations (PDEs), of hyperbolic or parabolic type, depending on the consideration of diffusion/dispersion phenomena. The design of the output-feedback control strategy follows a late lumping approach, in which the PDE system is considered, and descretized only at a later stage for implementation purposes. This strategy is based on feedback linearization and requires a state estimator, which takes the form of a distributed parameter Luenberger observer. A point of particular attention is the formulation of the model boundary conditions, from the classical Dankwerts conditions to more advanced formulations including dynamic boundary conditions, which has a significant influence on the control performance. Modelling and analysis of distributed networked control systems

This study reports the l(2) stability problem for a class of distributed heterogeneous systems interconnected via communication channels. First, the model of distributed networked control system (DNCS) is given, taking into account both the heterogeneity of the subsystems and the non-idealisation of the communication network. The sufficient condition for the finite-gain l(2) stability is then derived. A numerically solvable condition is further given based on the frequency domain result. Finally, a simulation example is provided to demonstrate the usefulness of the theoretical results obtained.

Adaptive Control of 2-D PDEs Using Mobile Collocated Actuator/Sensor Pairs With Augmented Vehicle Dynamics

The main focus of this work is on the inclusion of vehicle dynamics for the control of spatially distributed processes utilizing mobile actuators and sensors. It is assumed that spatially collocated actuator/sensor pairs, affixed on vehicles, are capable of moving within the spatial domain and a combined control law-plus-guidance law is proposed in order to better address the effects of spatiotemporally varying disturbances. The proposed control architecture is simplified by using static output feedback combined with adaptation of the feedback gains. A Lyapunov redesign approach is employed to derive the guidance laws via the appropriate use of the vehicle control torques. Such guidance laws are gradient-based and tend to move the vehicle to spatial locations with large spatial gradients. The novelty here is that vehicle dynamics are directly coupled to the process dynamics and their motion is solely and explicitly dictated by the control performance of the spatially distributed process. Extensive numerical studies of a 2-D diffusion PDE with a mobile robot are included and which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed combined control law-plus-guidance law.

Mean square detectability of multi-output systems over stochastic multiplicative channels

This study addresses the mean square detectability problem for multi-output networked systems via single packet or multiple packets transmission, where a multiplicative white noise model the unreliability of output channels. For the single packet case, by adopting the bisection technique, the authors give the critical value (lower bound) of mean square capacity for ensuring mean square detectability. For the m-parallel multiple packets transmission strategy, a necessary and sufficient condition on overall mean square capacity for mean square detectability in terms of the Mahler measure or topological entropy of the plant is presented, under the assumption that the given network resource can be allocated among all the output channels. Applications in erasure-type channel and channel with stochastic sector-bounded uncertainty are provided to demonstrate the results.

Riccati equations for second order spatially invariant partial differential systems

Recently, the class of spatially invariant systems was introduced with motivating examples of partial differential equations on an infinite domain. For these it was shown that by taking Fourier transforms, one obtains infinitely many finite-dimensional systems with a scalar parameter. The idea is that, for the LQR controller design for these systems, one can solve the parameterized LQR-Riccati equation pointwise. While for simple first order systems like the heat equations this approach works, for second order systems like wave or beam equations it is easy to construct examples for which this approach fails. Here we give a correct formulation for second order partial differential systems including wave and beam type equations. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
