Approximate controllability of infinite dimensional system with internal damping dependent on fractional powers of system operator

In this study, a class of models governed by a second-order (in time) evolution differential equation with damping and positive definite, self-adjoint system operator is studied. Damping term has a special, but practically important, form of a finite sum of fractional powers of the system operator. This type of damping operator can be used to model a variety of physical phenomena related to dissipation of energy empirically observed in physical systems. It may be used to model dissipation mechanisms resulting from air damping, internal structural damping, internal viscous damping, etc. Using spectral theory of linear unbounded operators and semi-group theory necessary and sufficient conditions of approximate controllability for second order infinite dimensional system with damping are formulated and proved. Some important, from the practical point of view, remarks and comments are also provided. In particular, necessary condition for approximate controllability is formulated and discussed. Finally, an illustrative example related to approximate controllability of distributed parameter system described by the partial differential equation with higher order spatial differential operators is presented. The example refers to a system describing dynamical behaviour of damped Kirchhoff-Love plate. The study extends earlier results on approximate controllability of damped second-order abstract evolution dynamical systems.

Leak Detection, Size Estimation and Localization in Pipe Flows

We design a leak detection system consisting of an adaptive observer based on a set of two coupled one dimensional first order hyperbolic partial differential equations governing the flow dynamics. It is assumed that measurements are only available at the inlet and outlet of the pipe. Convergence properties are provided showing that the leak size estimation problem can be tackled independently from how the leak is distributed along the pipe. This is key to obtaining a simple estimation scheme for the leak location. Simulations are provided to demonstrate the ability of the system to detect, quantify and locate leaks.

Reduced-order models based on the proper orthogonal decomposition are important tools in modeling and control of nonlinear distributed parameter systems. However, the global support of the reduced-basis functions and basis orthogonality provide challenges for applications such as combustion and fire models. This is due to the fact that all basis functions, except the first, have regions with different signs. Thus it can be challenging to simultaneously constrain coefficients to preserve positivity while ensuring an accurate representation of the full-order model. In this paper we introduce a logarithmic transformation that allows us to maintain both features though introduces its own issues. We consider a simplified Arrhenius reaction model to illustrate the transformation and the bases that are obtained. Imposing a conservation constraint is easy when the bases are coupled, but the logarithmic transformation forces us to decouple the models. This method is compared to a standard POD-Galerkin model, which predicts negative densities.

Keeping the pressure within predefined bounds is essential for the safety of managed pressure drilling operations, but drill string movements can induce pressure fluctuations that violate these margins. We extend previous results on disturbance rejection for a 2 x 2 hyperbolic model of the fluid dynamics in the borehole. We perform a simulation study, in which we illustrate the controller performance for heave induced oscillations and compare it to the previously available controller. The stochasticity of sea waves induces limitations on the achievable performance. Further, the controller is applied to intended string movements, where control can be used to remove conservative limitations on the speed of the movement. © 2016

Plasma q-profile control in tokamaks using a damping assignment passivity-based approach

The IDA-PBC based on PCH model for tokamak q-profile is investigated. Two scenarios are carried out. The first one is the resistive diffusion model for the magnetic poloidal flux. The second one is extended with the thermal diffusion. A feedforviiard control is used to ensure the compatibility with the actuator phySical ability. An IDA-PBC feedback is proposed to improve the system stabilization and convergence speed. The controllers are validated in the simulation using RAPTOR code and tested in TCV, the result is analyzed and the followed discussion proposed the required improvement for the next experiments. This paper describes the development of a distributed sliding mode control controller to regulate the pH of a tubular photobioreactor using the total inorganic carbon as the controlled variable of the process. The main purpose of the control system is to maintain the pH around a desired reference value and, at the same time, attenuate the undesirable transients caused by the disturbances. To study this problem, it is considered that this system is written as a set of hyperbolic partial differential equations. The distributed parameter model of the photobioreactor is transformed into a finite dimensional system by the method of characteristics. Then, the control design is performed in the finite dimensional system instead of the original distributed parameter model. The proposal allows to characterize the sliding regimes and their fundamental properties by a geometric approach. Through simulation and experimental results, the method is shown to be effective in controlling a tubular photobioreactor.

In this paper, control-oriented modeling approaches are presented for distributed parameter systems. These systems, which are in the focus of this contribution, are assumed to be described by suitable partial differential equations. They arise naturally during the modeling of dynamic heat transfer processes. The presented approaches aim at developing finite-dimensional system descriptions for the design of various open-loop, closed-loop, and optimal control strategies as well as state, disturbance, and parameter estimation techniques. Here, the modeling is based on the method of integrodifferential relations, which can be employed to determine accurate, finite-dimensional sets of state equations by using projection techniques. These lead to a finite element representation of the distributed parameter system. Where applicable, these finite element models are combined with finite volume representations to describe storage variables that are-with good accuracy-homogeneous over sufficiently large space domains. The advantage of this combination is keeping the computational complexity as low as possible. Under these prerequisites, real-time applicable control algorithms are derived and validated via simulation and experiment for a laboratory-scale heat transfer system at the Chair of Mechatronics at the University of Rostock. This benchmark system consists of a metallic rod that is equipped with a finite number of Peltier elements which are used either as distributed control inputs, allowing active cooling and heating, or as spatially distributed disturbance inputs.

Review of two-phase flow models for control and estimation

Most model-based control and estimation techniques put limitations on the structure and complexity of the models to which they are applied. This has motivated the development of simplified models of gas liquid two-phase flow for control and estimation applications. This paper reviews the literature for such models with a focus on applications from the field of drilling. The models are categorized in terms of complexity and the physical interpretation of the simplifications employed. A simulation study is used to evaluate their ability to qualitatively represent dynamics of 3 different gas-liquid scenarios encountered in drilling, based on which conclusions are drawn. Lyapunov-based control of a tethered satellite system

In this study, a tethered satellite system is considered as a distributed parameter system. By using the extended Hamilton's principle, the tethered satellite system can be described by three partial differential equations and six ordinary differential equations. To suppress the vibrations of the tether and satellites, six boundary control laws are employed based on Lyapunov's direct method. The closed-loop system is also proved to be uniformly bounded. Simulations are conducted to illustrate the performance of the closed-loop tethered satellite system.
