A hierarchical control is experimentally applied on a laboratory-size wastewater treatment plant. The process is constituted by four tanks in series in which an acidic effluent is treated with sodium hydroxyde added in each reactor so that pH at the outlet of the plant is maintained to a chosen value. pH is controlled locally in each tank for set-points chosen at the next hierarchical level so that the overall reagent consumption is minimal. The adaptation level takes into account the composition changes of the effluent at the inlet and the deviations noted between the actual process and the model. An organization level is placed at the top of the hierarchy so that the operator can intervene when necessary on the plant. This control structure was first set up on a single computer with which a satisfactory control was obtained. However to improve the control quality a true computer hierarchy is now used with two microprocessors in charge with the local control level, Connected to the central computer in charge with the upper levels of the hierarchy.

Identification of steady-state distributedsystems with space-variable parameters is a crucial problem in aquifer hydrology. This problem is considered in a mathematical framework familiar to control engineers. Assuming a stochastic “random-walk” model for the parameter spatial variability, an optimal estimator is derived in the 1-D case, using a fixed-interval smoothing technique. An application to a numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the method. Some generalisations to non linear and 2-D cases are also discussed and an application to the identification of a real underground aquifer in Belgium is briefly reported.
