distributed power generation versus grid extension:: An assessment of solar photovoltaics for rural electrification in Northern Ghana

The competitiveness of distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation for rural electrification in northern Ghana is assessed and compared with the conventional option of extending the national grid and increasing the capacity for centralised power generation. A model is constructed to calculate the life-cycle cost (LCC) of the two options and to test the sensitivity of different parameters. All calculations are based on information from the GEF/UNDP pilot region in the East Mamprusi District. In addition to the economic aspect, issues of quality and environmental effects are discussed. The LCC of distributed PV is lower than that of a grid extension for an electricity demand corresponding to solar home systems of 140 W-p or smaller. Thus, distributed PV is cost competitive for purposes of lighting, entertainment, information and basic public facilities, such as schools and hospitals. The LCC for the option of grid extension with central power generation is dominated by the cost of low-voltage micro-grids within the communities. Important factors are the density of households and the penetration (fraction of households electrified), as they affect the line length per connected household. The relatively low cost of regional medium-voltage grids makes the geographical location of each community less important than expected. Battery replacement every fifth year makes up the major part of the LCC of solar home systems and is also responsible for the large energy input in the production of the systems. This could limit both future cost reductions of distributed PV and its potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

In recent years, the international distributed power generation technology has developed very rapidly, and China also are at the stage of rapid development, this paper analyzed the most suitable distributed generation methods for China's development. According to the establishment of the small power grid in part South China region in ice and snow disasters in 2008, the importance of establishing small power grids through distributed generation in the accident on the power grid is analyzed in paper. And according to the instance of blackstart in the accident, the importance of distributed generation to blackstart in the grid accidents is analyzed in paper. At the same time, the main points of attentionin of blackstart of the small combined heat and power generation is analyzed in paper.

Renewable energy is best utilized when partnered with energy storage to balance the variable supply with daily and seasonal grid demands. At the distribution level, in addition to meeting power demands, there is a need to maintain system voltage and reactive power / VAR control. Rotating machinery is most effective for VAR control at the substation level. This paper presents a patented MW-scale system that provides power from a hydrogen-oxygen-fueled combined cycle power plant, where the hydrogen and oxygen are generated from electrolysis using renewable wind or solar power. The steam generated from combustion is the working fluid for the power plant, in a closed loop system. Also presented is a discussion on a patented strategy for safe combustion and handling of hydrogen and oxygen, as well as how to use this combustion strategy for flame and post flame temperature control. Finally, a preliminary benefits analysis illustrates the various energy storage and distributed generation benefits that are possible with this system. Depending on the storage approach, energy storage charge and discharge durations of 4 to greater than 24 hours are possible, much longer than most battery energy storage systems. Benefits include not only peak shaving and VAR control, but also grid balancing services to avoid the "spilling" of excess renewable power when supply exceeds demand and fast ramping in the evening hours.

The appearance of distributed generation in the power supply systems of industrial enterprises leads to the emergence of requirements for networks to increase their redundancy functions. The introduction of network redundancy fees will lead to an increase in electricity supply costs for such enterprises. The source of additional revenue may be the provision of regulatory resources to the aggregator of electricity demand management in the UES of Russia. But this requires changes that allow active consumers to supply the distribution network with excess capacity during peak hours in the UES of Russia. The article shows the efficiency of operation in the mode without power supply to the distribution network. This mode does not lead to a decrease in revenues from network services for the transmission of electricity. The proposed changes will lead to an increase in the reliability of power supply and increase the economic efficiency of the UES of Russia. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.

Large scale of distributed generation integrates in distribution networks nowadays. In order to address challenges posed by their large quantity and wide distribution, cluster regulation is currently one of the research hot issues. Unclear topology and missing parameters in low-voltage distribution networks have brought new obstacles to application of cluster regulation strategy. Thus, a multi spatiotemporal scale cluster regulation strategy for distribution networks based on voltage sensitivity sensing is proposed. First of all, sensitivity is calculated based on physical model in the medium-voltage distribution network. In the meantime, sensitivity information is mined through least squares method in the low-voltage distribution network. So that voltage fitting model is established through generalized regression neural network. Secondly, distributed generations are partitioned into virtual clusters online based on their community structure. Then, sensitivity based multi spatiotemporal scale regulation model is constructed. It contains day-ahead global optimization, intra-day cluster regulation and real-time autonomic control. Finally, results of simulation demonstrate that this strategy can effectively ensure distribution network to operate securely and economically. © 2023 IEEE.

Control of VSC for enhancement of power quality in off-grid distributed power generation

In this study, a control algorithm based on non-linear adaptive second-order Volterra filter (NLVF) is utilised to operate the voltage-source converter (VSC). The main role of VSC is to supply compensating current to improve the power quality in wind-based off-grid distributed power generation system. This off-grid system consists of three-phase induction generator, VSC and non-linear loads. The proposed control algorithm is adaptive as well as non-linear in nature. The characteristic of Volterra series is exploited to generate the reference source current for VSC operation. The NLVF estimates the active and reactive weights of fundamental load current for reference current generation. It mitigates the power quality problems created by disturbances in non-linear load or wind oscillations on off-grid system. The solution of power quality problems such as the presence of harmonics in supply current, load unbalance and reactive power compensation is obtained. Nevertheless, voltage and frequency control are also achieved. The VSC is used as a shunt compensator in the system. The entire off-grid system is designed and validated through the laboratory prototype development. The objective of the system is achieved and the steady state and dynamic performance is found satisfactory.

Assessment and Optimization of the Transient Response of Proportional-Resonant Current Controllers for distributed power generation Systems

The increasing number of distributed power generation systems (DPGSs) is changing the traditional organization of the electrical network. An important part of these DPGSs is based on renewable energy sources. In order to guarantee an efficient integration of renewable-based generation units, grid codes must be fulfilled. Their most demanding requirements, such as low-voltage ride-through and grid support, need a really fast transient response of the power electronics devices. In this manner, the current controller speed is a key point. This paper proposes a methodology to assess and optimize the transient response of proportional-resonant current controllers. The proposed methodology is based on the study of the error signal transfer function roots by means of pole-zero plots. Optimal gains are set to achieve fast and nonoscillating transient responses, i.e., to optimize the settling time. It is proved that optimal gain selection results from a tradeoff between transients caused by reference changes and transients caused by changes at the point of common coupling. Experimental results obtained by means of a three-phase voltage source converter prototype validate the approach. Short transient times are achieved even when tests emulate very demanding realistic conditions: a +90 degrees phase-angle jump in the current reference and a "type C" voltage sag at the point of common coupling.

Air quality impacts of distributed power generation in the South Coast Air Basin of California 1: Scenario development and modeling analysis

distributed generation (DG) is generally defined as the operation of many small stationary power generators throughout an urban air basin. Although DG has the potential to supply a significant portion of the increased power demands in California and the rest of the United States, it may lead to increased levels of in-basin pollutants and adversely impact urban air quality. This study focuses on two main objectives: (1) the systematic characterization of DG installation in urban air basins, and (2) the simulation of potential air quality impacts using a state-of-the-art three-dimensional computational model. A general and systematic approach is devised to construct five realistic and 21 spanning scenarios of DG implementation in the South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB) of California. Realistic scenarios reflect an anticipated level of DG deployment in the SoCAB by the year 2010. Spanning scenarios are developed to determine the potential impacts of unexpected outcomes. Realistic implementations of DG in the SoCAB result in small differences in ozone and particulate matter concentrations in the basin compared to the baseline simulations. The baseline accounts for population increase, but does not consider any future emissions control measures. Model results for spanning implementations with extra high DG market penetration show that domain-wide ozone peak concentrations increase significantly. Also, air quality impacts of spanning implementations when DG operate during a 6-h period are larger than when the same amount of emissions are introduced during a 24-h period. Bidirectional Grid-Tie Flyback Converter Applied to distributed power generation and Street Lighting Integrated System

This paper presents a multifunctional bidirectional converter applied to street lighting and photovoltaic (PV) microgeneration systems. The proposed converter works as an electronic driver supplying a street lighting luminaire based on light emitting diodes (LEDs) at night, from ac single-phase mains with high power factor and reduced harmonic distortion. During daylight hours, the converter injects the produced energy by a PV panel to the grid, working as a grid-tie inverter. The proposed topology is based on the integration of two flyback converters, one for each half-cycle of the grid voltage, avoiding the usual diode bridge rectifier for LED lamps drives, thus providing a bidirectional power flow. A prototype of the proposed electronic stage has been designed, built, and tested, in order to validate the system. Finally, experimental results are presented. In rectifier mode, an efficiency of 86% was achieved, whereas an efficiency of 89% was obtained in inverter mode.
