In this article, a hybrid connected unified power quality conditioner integrating distributed generation (HCUPQC-DG) is proposed. Two dc ports are created at the dc link of the HCUPQC-DG, in which one low-voltage (LV) dc port is directly connected to distributed generation (DG), and the other high-voltage (HV) dc port is indirectly connected to DG through the front-end dc-dc converter. With the hybrid connected configuration, the HV is designed to ensure the dc-ac voltage conversion capability, whereas the LV, i.e., the voltage of DG, can be relatively low and vary in a wide range. Besides, most active power can be directly transferred from DG to the ac load or grid through the direct power flow path. Hence, the conversion efficiency is enhanced, and the power capacity of the front-end dc-dc converter is significantly reduced. The operating principle and the control and modulation strategies of the proposed HCUPQC-DG are discussed. Moreover, the power flow through the HCUPQC-DG is analyzed in detail to understand the system operation. Experimental results with a 3-kVA prototype are provided to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed HCUPQC-DG.

This paper proposes an application of the recent metaheuristic rider optimization algorithm (ROA) for determining the optimal size and location of renewable energy sources (RES) including wind turbine (WT), photovoltaic (PV), and biomass-based distributed generation (DG) units in distribution systems (DS). The main objective function is to minimize the total power and energy losses. power loss-sensitivity factor (PLSF) is used with the ROA to determine the suitable candidate buses and accelerate the solution process. The Weibull and Beta probability distribution functions (PDF) are employed to characterize the variability of wind speed and solar radiation, respectively. The high penetration of intermittent renewable resource together with demand variations has introduced many challenges to distribution systems such as power fluctuations, voltage rise, high losses, and low voltage stability, therefore battery energy storage (BES) and dispatchable Biomass are considered to smooth out the fluctuations and improve supply continuity. The standard 33 and 69-bus test systems are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique compared with other well-known optimization techniques. The results show that the developed approach accelerates to the near-optimal solution seamlessly, and in steady convergence characteristics compared with other techniques.

power generation from marine-turbines offers a vast potential for raising the contribution of renewable energy sources to the electricity grid. Typically, marine-turbine power units comprise marine-turbines that receive mechanical excitation from sea currents or tidal streams and synchronous or asynchronous generators that are finally connected to the electricity grid. Due to connection to the same transmission lines, interactions between the excitations of the individual generators appear. To achieve stabilization of the generators' functioning, as well as synchronization to the grid's frequency the generators' control has to compensate for such interactions. The article proposes a nonlinear optimal control approach for distributed marine-turbine power units that use synchronous generators. First, the dynamic model of the distributed power system undergoes approximate linearization around a temporary operating point which is re-computed at each time-step of the control algorithm. The linearization relies on first-order Taylor series expansion and on the computation of the associated Jacobian matrices. For the approximately linearized model of the distributed power system a stabilizing H-infinity (optimal) feedback controller is designed. To compute the controller's feedback gains an algebraic Riccati equation is repetitively solved at each time-step of the control method. The global stability properties of the control scheme are proven through Lyapunov analysis. The proposed control method retains the advantages of optimal control, that is fast and accurate tracking of the reference setpoints, under moderate variations of the control inputs. Interval power flow calculation algorithm for multi-terminal dc distribution networks considering distributed generation output uncertainties

An interval power flow calculation (PFC) algorithm for multi-terminal DC distribution networks is proposed to handle the uncertainties of distributed generation output powers and loads. Firstly, an equivalent resistance is introduced to represent the effect of droop control in DC distribution networks. The power losses of the equivalent resistance are offset by adding the injection powers to droop nodes, which guarantees the precision of the equivalent resistance model. The Newton-Raphson method is used for deterministic PFC based on the equivalent resistance, and it is applicable to DC distribution networks with different kinds of network topologies and voltage source converter control modes. Secondly, based on the deterministic PFC algorithm and affine arithmetic, an interval PFC algorithm is presented to handle the uncertainties of distributed generation output powers and loads. The affine arithmetic based interval PFC algorithm not only can determine power flow intervals quickly and accurately, but also can analyse the influences of distributed generation outputs to nodal voltages. Finally, a series of test systems are used to validate the proposed algorithms. Simulation results illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the deterministic PFC algorithm and the interval PFC algorithm for multi-terminal DC distribution networks.

A novel hybrid downsampling and optimized random forest approach for islanding detection and non-islanding power quality events classification in distributed generation integrated system

The quality of power in modern-day power system is polluted with increased penetration of converter-based distributed generations such as wind farm, solar PV system. In such scenarios detection of islanding and power quality disturbances as well as the removal of these from the system is quite crucial for equipment and maintenance personnel safety. Here, a down-sampling empirical mode decomposition (DEMD) and optimized random forest (RF) machine learning approach are hybridized to detect islanding conditions with reduced non-detection zone (NDZ) and classify non-islanding power quality events in a highly wind energy penetrated distribution generation system. DEMD has a special ability to filter out the fundamental signal from the polluted signal and random forest is quite an unbiased non-linear machine learning approach. Moreover, an improved grey wolf optimization technique is proposed to optimize the parameter of RF. The proposed technique is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink with IEEE 13-Bus test grid. The efficacy of the proposed method is evaluated through comparative analysis with existing machine learning techniques under normal and noisy environments as well as validated in narrow NDZ with lesser detection time.

With the increasing maturity of renewable energy (e.g., wind energy, solar energy) power generation technology, distributed power generation based on renewable energy receiving increasing attention. However, the penetration of DGs increases the fault levels of the power distribution system, and hence increases the operational risks to power supply reliability and security. This paper presented a power supply restoration solution of active distribution systems considering distributed renewable generation. The proposed solution is assessed through simulation experiments based on the case study of a 53-bus test network for a range of operational scenarios and the numerical results demonstrated the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed solution. © 2022 IEEE.

In a developing country, electricity has become the necessity of the growth industries;thus, the distribution system power quality and reliability are crucial. With low carbon initiatives, renewable energy or distributed generation (DG) is a promising source of electricity and leads the complex distribution system. Vital rises in DGs in power grids will significantly impact the system reliability and security, especially in power losses and voltage profiles parameters. This research focuses on an optimization placement and size of DGs in distribution systems to minimize power loss and improve voltage profile using the Modified Lightning Search Algorithm (MLSA). This research has modelled the practical 69-bus radial distribution system. Then MLSA with a weight summation approach is used to identify the suitable location and size for the DGs in the design proposal stage. The optimization objectives are to reduce power losses and improve the voltage profile, especially at the connection point of DGs. Besides that, load profile, DGs constant load and the solar load in distribution system modelled using MATLAB software. The results of the simulation using MLSA indicated that the optimization allocation and sizes of solar DGs applied with current load and load changes can minimize the power losses and improve voltage profile. These results verify the proposed approach's effectiveness and success in determining the optimal location and sizing of solar DGs to reduce power losses as well as improve voltage profiles. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

New progress in the power system has opened a new era of electric grid operations, prompting smart approaches. Smart grids are mainly designed to integrate renewable energy sources into a more reliable and efficient system. The characteristics of energy storage systems may be useful in meeting these goals. One of these features is its ability to improve system reliability by allowing islands to perform much better. in this paper new method is presented to enhance the power system's reliability by using plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and distributed generation. This paper aims to find the best size of the parking lot for installation and loading to improve system reliability while keeping costs low. The general method for this paper is described in this section. A two-stage approach has been developed to minimize the objective function under study, which is paired with a genetic algorithm (GA). The discrete size of the Parking lots units and the discrete component of the load choice factors on each bus are represented by numerical variables in each solution. © 2022 IEEE.

In response to the government's proposal to properly control the development of thermal power, vigorously develop the planning of distributed generation (DG), the State power Corporation has formulated corresponding policies to promote the development of DG. Based on the neural network algorithm, it proposes the reactive power optimization configuration on the basis of the location and capacity of DG in the power distribution network (PDN) and establishes a mathematical model for this configuration of the PDN with DG. The research results reveal that reactive power optimization by adding DG can effectively reduce the grid loss and the voltage deviation in the grid. Therefore, social and environmental benefits are achieved by improving the power supply quality of the PDN, reducing network losses, and increasing economic benefits. © 2022 IEEE.
