Using Multiagent System to Build Structural Earth Model

Mainly based on seismic data, structural earth models are commonly used for oil & gas reservoir engineering studies. The geometry and the topology of a structural earth model strictly depend on the geological characteristics of its various surfaces. These characteristics constitute the geologists' interpretations of the earth model to be built. In the 3D modeling applications currently used in industry, these interpretations are often registered after the completion of the structural earth model. Therefore further changes in the interpretations can hardly be introduced without reconstructing the structural model from scratch. This situation is dramatic since the only true geometrical information concerning subsurface is that issued from drillings, which daily bring new data. For the above reasons, there is a great interest in providing computer-aided tool for validating and improving geological interpretations to facilitate the geologists' modeling work. This paper presents a distributed problem solving approach, which enables geologists to quickly validate and improve structural earth models by considering new drilling data. This approach is based on a self-organizing multiagent system and on domain-specific expertise.

This paper proposes a framework for developing a distributed design support system for concurrent design process and applies it experimentally to preliminary aircraft design. The design process of a large complicated system is characterized by compromising between various criteria and relationships among quasi-independently decomposed subproblems. The preliminary design of aircraft is typical of such a design problem. In this paper, after the design problem is defined as a lumped mass system, the types of design phases, knowledge and operations are formally defined. The design process is decomposed horizontally and vertically, and the coordination mechanism is categorized into inter, inner and global aspects. Based on these, a computational method for supporting design refinement is developed using mathematical programming techniques. Furthermore, an experimental computer-aided design system is implemented for the preliminary design of aircraft using knowledge-base system techniques and agent-based distribution of tasks, etc. Its application demonstrates the validity and promises of proposed models and procedures.

On adaptive agentlets for distributed divide-and-conquer: A dynamical systems approach

This paper is concerned with the dynamics of autonomous agents in performing distributed problem-solving tasks. The goal of this work is to show: 1) how certain tasks may be handled by breeds of distributed agents self-reproduced by other agents in response to their local environment and 2) how the behavioral repository of the agents may be constructed based on same well-defined dynamical systems models. The breeds of agents progressively generated in the course of distributed problem-solving are referred to as agentlets. The specific task for demonstrating this dynamical systems-based agentlet-oriented approach is the one in which the agents are required to search and mark certain feature locations in a two-dimensional (2-D) search space by way of divide-and-conquer. In so doing, individual agents may have different dynamical motion, depending on when and where they are bred. This paper will provide a detailed description of the agents of different dynamics and show how the agentlets proceed with this task by moving according to their well-defined dynamics, breeding their offspring agents in the environment, and fine-tuning their dynamical systems parameters. In addition, it is proven that in the given example task, the designed agentlets will guarantee to reach all the feature locations in the search space.

Expressive applications of constraint logic programming

This introduction to the Constraint Logic Programming language CLP(R) uses applications to provide insight to the language's strengths. An overview of CLP(R) is followed by a discussion of three applications that illustrate the language's unifying treatment both of numeric and symbolic computing and of engineering analysis and synthesis problems. Another discussion dissects the interpreter's constraint solver and clarifies how a problem's search space can be restricted declaratively. The final example is an extended description of the construction of a network of interpreters, which can be used to distributively solve a set of linear equations. This extension requires no modification of the CLP(R) interpreter and points out the benefits of revisiting established algorithms vis-a-vis CLP(R).

The concept of supply-chain is about managing coordinated information and material flows, plant operations, and logistics. It provides flexibility and agility in responding to consumer demand shifts without cost overlays in resource utilization. The fundamental premise of this philosophy is;synchronization among multiple autonomous business entities represented in it. That is, improved coordination within and between various supply-chain members. The increased coordination can lead to reduction in lead times and costs, alignment of interdependent decision-making processes, and improvement in the overall performance of each member as well as the supply-chain network. This paper describes an architecture to create the appropriate structure, install proper controls, and implement principles of optimization to synchronize the supply-chain. A supply-chain model based on a collaborative system approach is illustrated.

FORS - A SOFTWARE TOOL FOR FLEXIBLE DESIGN

This paper is a description of FORS (Flexible Organizations), a design environment based on a network representation of the design effort. Each design network consists of: (a) Tools (software programs distributed over the whole network of computers) and (b) Aspects (models to which the tools are applied). The system's communication and exchange of data are based on distributed problem-solving techniques. FORS provides an icon based interface, allows for the dynamic reconfiguration of the design network, maintains libraries of records, tools and aspects, and attempts to develop mechanisms for collaboration between the different tools. The addition and the deletion of tools are relatively easy and the user has the ability to access information and data from previous design efforts. FORS is a new approach to design environments because it gives equal emphasis on the tools and the data used in the design effort. FORS embodies some old ideas, like object-oriented representation of the tools, but simultaneously extends these and creates a modular and flexible environment. One important aspect of FORS is the introduction of the issue of remote effects (the impacts that one design task can have on other tasks). FORS is currently being used in the mechanical design of an automobile window regulator;an implementation in the area of power systems is in progress.

A distributed control architecture for an autonomous mobile robot

This paper describes a distributed Control Architecture for an autonomous mobile robot. We start by characterizing the Conceptual Levels into which the various problem-solving activities of a mobile robot can be classified. In sequence, we discuss a distributed Control System that provides scheduling and coordination of multiple concurrent activities on a mobile robot. Multiple Expert Modules are responsible for the various tasks and communicate through messages and over a Blackboard. As a testbed, the architecture of a specific system for Sonar-Based Mapping and Navigation is presented, and a distributed implementation is described. © 1986.
