Beyond signal processing applications, frames are also powerful tools for modeling the sensing and information processing of many biological and man-made systems that exhibit inherent redundancy. In many cases, these systems are required to use distributed computational strategies to analyze and process the sensory information. In this talk, I will review the use of frames to model distributed sensing systems with a particular focus on sensory neural systems. In light of the evidence that many of these systems employ sparse codes, I will describe our Locally Competitive Algorithms (LCAs) that use a dynamical system to solve many sparse approximation problems. These LCAs employ a parallel computational architecture with simple analog components. I will show numerical simulation results for these systems and describe their relationship to the many recently-proposed iterative thresholding algorithms. Our LCA approach also demonstrates potential advantages in coding time-varying signals (e.g., video) by reflecting the smooth signal changes in smooth coefficient variations. Finally, I will highlight some future directions where we hope to impact areas such as efficient analog signal processing devices, fast discrete approximation algorithms, and video processing and computer vision in complex temporal environments.

New distributed forms for optimal estimation and detection problems that arise for instance in a distributed sensor network (DSN) are proposed. One of the prime motivations in a DSN is to try to minimize the communication load between different sites, This is achieved by preprocessing or summarizing the observations locally, e.g., at the sensor location, thus geographically "distributing" or "decentralizing" the algorithm. A batch method is described, as well as an on-line or real-time algorithm when sensor parameters are a priori unknown. After sensor failure optimality is preserved under these new constraints.

A proof-of-concept gateway employing a distributed architecture has been built and demonstrated. The gateway serves as a translator between tactical C 3 networks. It employs commercial off-the-shelf technology, including a derivative of Ethernet, in a virtual machine implementation. The multinode communication system employs concurrent processing and is managed by a MITRE-developed real-time operating system (kernel). This kernel employs the commercial operating executive Versatile Real-Time Executive (VRTX), which has been tailored to the multiprocessing environment.

Big data refers to large amounts of data, normally in unstructured forms, such as text, sensor data, audio, video, log files, and more. When collecting from a large number of nodes, sensor networks can produce large data sets. Climate and sensor network data are applied to assist the decision making process in agricultural production. In this paper we present the main aspects of a prototype to test Hadoop framework applied to process climate related data sets in a cloud computing infrastructure.

A moving k-nearest-neighbor (MKNN) query is a continuous k-nearest-neighbor (KNN) query issued by a moving object. As both the query owner and other mobile objects are moving, the influenced area (i.e., cells in the cellular networks), and query result of a MKNN query change with time. Existing processing techniques for MKNN queries are all centralized approaches which rely on the location update messages from moving objects. However, these approaches typically employ complex data structures and algorithms. Moreover, the server may not be able to cope with a high location report rate which is necessary to ensure accurate and correct answers. In this paper, we propose a distributed strategy to process MKNN queries in real-time. In our scheme, called disMKNN, the server and moving objects collaborate to maintain the KNN of a MKNN query. While the server keeps track of a MKNN query's influenced cells, moving objects within the cells monitor their own relationships (i.e., whether they are part of the KNN answers) to the query. Results of an extensive performance study show the effectiveness of disMKNN.

distributed processing and control are critical to supports distributed intelligence and autonomy of multi-degree-of-freedom motion systems. Measurements and fusion of spatiotemporal physical quantities imply data-intensive computing and spatial distribution of computing resources to enable control and processing of large data sets from image and inertial sensors. We examine distributed and asynchronous processing nodes which process information independently deriving partial solutions. There are multiple sensing-and-processing nodes in each individual agent. Each node comprises solid-state or MEMS multi-degree-of-freedom sensors with ASICs which process and fuse data. On-node computing supports distributed processing. Adaptive bottom-up organization ensures data aggregation and data management with operation on sub-samples or hashed sets of large source datasets. Cooperative distributed processing is essential in centralized, decentralized and behavioral coordination. In the centralized organization, a central processor may not ensure adequacy. A network of semi-autonomous on-device processing sensors may interact to solve specific tasks and validate solutions. Problem allocation, partitioning, coordination and other tasks are implemented using software-and hardware-supported algorithms and protocols. This paper contributes to design of next generation of systems with distributed multi-node processing capabilities.

The possibilities and realities of real-time distributed processing in today's PC LAN (local area network) world are examined. A useful real-world distributed application implemented on a QNX-based PC network is given. It is concluded that with the concepts presented many other distributed applications for real-time process control can be implemented on a PC network of low- or high-power PCs, taking advantage of the unused network resources available. The virtually unlimited processing power available on today's PC-LANs will allow applications normally out of reach for a PC to become routinely available. It is believed that, with the right software tools and language compilers, many mini- and mainframe-class applications are a possibility.< >

At present, in the design and analysis of discrete event systems, the parallel or distributed simulation mechanism is adopted to make these models occur concurrently , then the problem will be easy to be solved, the validation of their models is often addressed via simulation. Lookahead computation is a good method that improves the distributed simulation performance of timed transition Petri nets (TTPN). Extended timed Petri nets (ETTPN) is extended in time based on TTPN, it meet lookahead requirements, and use the lookahead to analyze the ETTPN model for finding the concurrency and blocking structure, thereby making certain the logical process (LP). Based on the specialties of lookahead, the lookahead was applied in parallel simulation, and acquire the sufficient condition about the ETTPN model existing concurrency. According to the condition, parallel program can be partitioned into several logical processes, and the partition algorithm about distributed processing is avail. In order to reduce error rate,a improved mapping algorithm is presented.

This paper presents the goal, accomplishments and research issues of an NSF project. The project aims to develop a distributed event-triggered knowledge sharing network (ETKnet) for government organizations to share, not only data and application operations, but also knowledge embedded in organizational and inter-organizational policies, regulations, data and security constraints as well as collaborative processes and operating procedures. A unified knowledge and process specification language has been developed to formally specify multi-faceted human and organizational knowledge in terms of three types of knowledge rules and rule structures. A user-friendly interface is provided for collaborating organizations to define events of interest as well as application operations, knowledge rules, rule structures and triggers. Events are published in a global registry for browsing, querying, event subscription and notification. Rules and rule structures are automatically translated into Web services for distributed processing in ETKnet. Event data are dots that can be connected dynamically across organizational boundaries through the interoperation of knowledge rules, processes and application operations.

A main task in distributed beamforming (DBF) techniques for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to maximize the received signal power at the access point (AP) while inflicting small interfering effect on unintended receivers. When the DBF nodes are unaware of the directions of unintended receivers, interference at the latter receivers may be substantially reduced by forming a beampattern with a narrow mainlobe that is pointed towards the AP. However, such an approach requires the DBF nodes to be sporadically scattered over a large area and, hence, increases the probability of the loss of their inter-connection. Assuming that nodes are uniformly distributed in the network, we show how the DBF nodes can be intelligently selected to ameliorate the network disconnectivity problem. In turn, when the directions of unintended receivers are known, one may aim to apply the so-called null-steering beamforming approach to effectively nullify the received power at those directions. However, it can be shown that implementing a null-steering beamformer in WSNs requires each node to be aware of the locations of all other nodes in the network; a requirement that opposes the distributed nature of WSNs. For such a scenario, we approximate the null-steering beamformer with another beamformer that is amenable to a distributed implementation.
