The modeling and simulation on evacuation has recently become a topic of great interest. We present an agent-based model to construct crowd evacuations for emergency response from an area under an explosion. Various types of agents are designed as well as the interactions of them are concerned in contrast to traditional models in which the total populations are considered to be consisted of identical individuals and the interactions between them are omitted. Different cases are taken into account to test the effect of our model by iterative simulations. At last, plenty simulation results suggest several effective ways to minimize the harmful consequences of such life-threaten events.

In modern datacenter networks (DCNs), the booming online data-intensive applications generate mix-flows with or without deadlines. Balancing these heterogenous flows among parallel equal-cost paths to meet the tight deadlines is crucial. However, due to the unaware of deadlines, the existing load balancing mechanisms cannot choose suitable (re)routing path for mix-flows to meet their respective stringent requirements. In this paper, we propose a deadline-aware rerouting scheme called DAR, which applies different routing strategies for mix-flows. Specifically, DAR first perceives the deadline flows and then categorizes them based on the urgency of the deadline, and employs different (re)routing strategies to ensure that flows with more urgent deadlines are completed earlier. The NS-3 simulation results show that DAR effectively balances mix-flows. For example, compared to the state-of-the-art load balancing schemes, DAR reduces the deadline miss rate and the average flow completion time (AFCT) by up to 38% and 35.5%, respectively.

Today's supercomputers are moving towards deployment of many-core processors like Intel Xeon Phi Knights Landing (KNL), to deliver high compute and memory capacity. Applications executing on such many-core platforms with improved vectorization require high memory bandwidth. To improve performance, architectures like Knights Landing include a high bandwidth and low capacity in-package high bandwidth memory (HBM) in addition to the high capacity but low bandwidth DDR4. Other architectures like Nvidia's Pascal GPU also expose similar stacked DRAM. In architectures with heterogeneity in memory types within a node, efficient allocation and data movement can result in improved performance and energy savings in future systems if all the data requests are served from the high bandwidth memory. In this paper, we propose a memory-heterogeneity aware runtime system which guides data prefetch and eviction such that data can be accessed at high bandwidth for applications whose entire working set does not fit within the high bandwidth memory and data needs to be moved among different memory types. We implement a data movement mechanism managed by the runtime system which allows applications to run efficiently on architectures with heterogeneous memory hierarchy, with trivial code changes. We show upto 2X improvement in execution time for Stencil3D and Matrix Multiplication which are important HPC kernels.

In current scientific workflows, the computational needs of tasks might not be known when it is submitted to a system for execution. Current resource management (RM) systems and workflow managers (WFMs) provide limited support for dynamic resource allocation in HPC systems, thus the common approach is to request the maximum resources needed for a maximum time, potentially wasting resources. However, in some cases, maximum resources may not be estimated a priori, as a result, a workflow may be completed after the deadline, or in cases, the task may terminated by the resource manager. A combination of workflow manager and resource management system that can accommodate a fine-grain elastic resource allocation during the execution of a workflow would alleviate this problem. This paper presents a dynamic elastic resource management framework based on the Parsl workflow manager and PMIx-enabled SLURM and reports the early evaluation of the framework using two workflow applications.

Although ISDN and OSI erupted in the world of telecommunications a dozen years ago, it is fair to recognize that the marriage has not completely been consummated between telephony and data communication. This is particularly true for ISDN network signaling, in the CCITT 7 environment where the habits and customs of telephony still prevail. Circuit switching is today, within the network, the backbone of ISDN services. Tomorrow we can expect new services that go beyond what we experience and imagine now. The design of an integrated, intelligent and flexible signaling system to allow easy evolution of services and flexible distribution of intelligence within the network, is a key to this future. This paper discusses the concepts which span the study of such a new signaling system.

Enterprise Information Systems can be described according to the Open distributed processing Reference Model (RM-ODP), where five different viewpoints are specified analyzing various aspects of the system. Configuration issues are explored in the Engineering Viewpoint of RM-ODP. In practice, configuration issues are explored in discrete stages, supported by autonomous software tools, each of which adopts its own metamodel for system representation. We propose a platform independent framework, which focuses on the Engineering Viewpoint of Enterprise Information Systems managing application configuration and network design issues independently of application development progress. In order to apply this framework using existing tools, model exchangeability and tool coordination must be supported by standard, open methods. Thus, a common metamodel is proposed to generate enterprise information system models, which are stored in XML. A UML 2.0 profile is defined to visualize these models, facilitate the designer to interact with them and coordinate specific tool invocation.

This paper presents the concept of Digital Ji-in, a framework for managing permanent digital identifiers whose structure is based on a peer to peer network. The origin of the term Digital-Ji-in is explained in the paper. We describe several types of identifiers and explain why their management is already an important issue. We show that some identifiers have been reused, creating significant problems. We propose a framework for maintaining identifier information safely over a long period of time. We present its structure based on a secure network of peers. We also describe some use cases of this framework. However, as only identifiers are recorded mechanically, problems may arise if data should be associated with them. We discuss this issue at the end of the paper.

This article approaches the way how to think about collaboration with pervasive technology in a new way. It introduces ambient media as new form of media, where the media as such is linked to physical worlds, and smartly aggregated rather than generated with a push or pull model. Collaboration between human man and technology becomes a issue of collaboration, rather than a question of human-computer interaction. As far user contributed content was mostly seen as process, where consumers contribute to online Web forums or create their own videos and upload it to YouTube. The user actively contributes and collaborates to create the content of the media. However, pervasive technology enables much more: pervasive technology allows implicit collaboration, thus the collection of consumer data passively and aggregate the content of the media. One example is the open source platform Portable Personality (P2), whose goal is to generate a personality profile of the implicit collected contextual information. P2 will offer the possibility of personality profiles, rather than simple usage history information or sensor data input. Within the context of this article, the notion of ambient media is introduced. As a practical example to underline the new way of thinking about media, P2 is introduced and the underlying principles explained.

More than ever, the semiconductor industry is asked to answer society's call for more computing capacity and capability, which are driven by rapid digitalization, the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence, and the ever-increasing need for high-fidelity scientific simulations. While facing high demand, the supply of computing capability is being technically challenged by the slowdown of Moore's law and the need for high energy efficiency. This tug-of-war has now pushed the industry towards domain-specific accelerators, perhaps likely past the point of no return. The mix of general-purpose CPUs and high-end GPGPUs, which has pervaded data centers over the past few years, is likely to be expanded to a much richer set of application-specific accelerators, including AI engines, reconfigurable hardware, and even perhaps quantum, annealing, and neuromorphic devices. While acceleration and better efficiency may be enabled by using domain-specific accelerators for selected workloads, a much more holistic (i.e., system-wide) approach will have to be adopted to achieve significant performance gains for complex applications that consist of a variety of workloads where each could benefit from a specific accelerator. As an important example, scientific computing, which increasingly incorporates AI training and inference kernels in a tightly-integrated fashion, provides a rich and exciting laboratory for addressing the challenges of efficiently using highly-heterogeneous systems and for ultimately realizing their promises. Those challenges include co-designing the application, which requires domain experts to collaborate with other experts across the stack for workload mapping and data orchestration, and also adopting a decentralized strategy that embeds processing units where the data need them. Finally, the early experience of those co-design efforts should help the industry devise a longer-term strategy for developing programming models that would relieve application e

With the rapid development of highperformance computing, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become an important part of hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. Mesh quality is the key factor that affects the accuracy and efficiency of CFD numerical calculation. However, the current the process of mesh quality discrimination is very time-consuming. The manpower time needed for this process takes up a large proportion in the whole numerical calculation process. A large number of artificial intelligence algorithms have been put forward to replace the human to efficiently complete all kinds of tedious tasks. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based mesh quality discrimination method, MeshNet. MeshNet uses residual neural network structure to learn mesh features and automatically judge the mesh quality. The experimental results show that the proposed network can greatly save labor time cost and achieve an accuracy of 94.41% for mesh quality discrimination.
