This paper reports our experience using AspectJ, a general-purpose aspect-oriented extension to Java, to implement distribution and persistence aspects in a web-based information system. This system was originally implemented in Java and restructured with AspectJ. Our main contribution is to show that AspectJ is useful for implementing several persistence and distribution concerns in the application considered, and other similar applications. We have also identified a few drawbacks in the language and suggest some minor modifications that could significantly improve similar implementations. Despite the drawbacks, we argue that the AspectJ implementation is superior to the pure Java implementation. Some of the aspects implemented in our experiment are abstract and constitute a simple aspect framework. The other aspects are application specific but we suggest that different implementations might follow the same aspect pattern. The framework and the pattern allow us to propose architecture-specific guidelines that provide practical advice for both restructuring and implementing certain kinds of persistent and distributed applications with AspectJ.

Autonomous intelligent robotic systems that can survive in dynamic changing environments have yet to be realized. The robot must process incoming information, make decisions, and learn from previous actions concurrently and in real time. Reliance on one all-encompassing system with one overburdened processor, no matter how fast, makes this goal unreachable. One of the primary reasons the goal is unreachable is that the knowledge base that the robot must access to make its decisions grows so large over time that simply searching the knowledge base for a decision becomes too time consuming for acceptable robotic behavior. One solution is to distribute the knowledge base among several processors and search in parallel. An experiment was contrived to test parallel searching algorithms which must search large databases of information, and provide some insight on performance of the underlying programming environment.

We present a small programming language for distributed systems based on message passing processes. In contrast to similar languages, channels are one-to-one connections between a unique sender and a unique receiver process. Process definitions and channels are first class values and the topology of process systems can change dynamically. The operational semantics of the language is defined by means of graph rewriting rules. A static type system based on the notion of linear types ensures that channels are always used as one-to-one connections. © 1995 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) form an emerging paradigm for communications within chips. In particular, bufferless NoCs require significantly less area and power consumption, but also pose novel major scheduling problems to achieve full capacity. In this paper, we provide first insights on the capacity of bufferless NoCs. In particular, we present optimal periodic schedules for several bufferless NoCs with a complete-exchange traffic pattern. These schedules particularly fit distributed-programming models and network congestion-control mechanisms. Finally, we analytically evaluate the performance of our scheduling algorithms.

Java RMI's synchronous invocation model may cause scalability challenges when long duration invocations are targeted. One way of overcoming this difficulty is adopting an asynchronous mode of operation. An asynchronous invocation allows the client to continue with its computation after dispatching a call, thus eliminating the need to wait idle while its request is being processed by a remote server. This paper describes an execution framework which extends Java RMI functionality with asynchrony. It is implemented on top of RMI calls, using the thread pooling capability and the reflection mechanism of Java. It differs from previous work as it does not require any external tool, preprocessor, or compiler and it may be integrated with previously developed software as no modification of target remote objects is necessary.

Attribute-based communication is a promising paradigm for modelling and programming complex interactions in open distributed systems such as collective adaptive systems (CAS). This new paradigm has been formalized in AbC, a kernel calculus with a minimal set of primitives that can be used to model formally verifiable CAS. The calculus assumes an underlying coordination infrastructure that has to guarantee the wanted communication and leaves open the actual implementation of the way communication partners are selected. The proposed implementations of messages exchange for AbC are either not in full agreement with the original semantics or do miss detailed performance evaluations. In this paper, we continue the search for efficient implementations of AbC and present ABEL - a domain specific framework that offers programming constructs with a direct correspondence to those of AbC. We use Erlang to implement ABEL inter- and intra-components interaction that together faithfully model AbC semantics and enable us to verify properties of ABEL program. We also consider a number of case studies and, by experimenting with them, show that it is possible to preserve AbC semantics while guaranteeing good performance. We also argue that even better performances can be achieved if the "strong" AbC requirement on the total order of message delivery is relaxed.

Most programming languages adopt static binding, but for distributed programming an exclusive reliance on static binding is too restrictive: dynamic binding is required in various guises, for example when a marshalled value is received from the network, containing identifiers that must be rebound to local resources. Typically it is provided only by ad-hoe mechanisms that lack clean semantics. In this paper we adopt a foundational approach, developing core dynamic rebinding mechanisms as extensions to simply-typed call-by-value lambda-calculus. To do so we must first explore refinements of the call-by-value reduction strategy that delay instantiation, to ensure computations make use of the most recent versions of rebound definitions. We introduce redex-time and destruct-time strategies. The latter forms the basis for a lambda(marsh) calculus that supports dynamic rebinding of marshalled values, while remaining as far as possible statically-typed. We sketch an extension of lambda(marsh) with concurrency and communication, giving examples showing how wrappers for encapsulating untrusted code can be expressed. Finally, we show that a high-level semantics for dynamic updating can also be based on the destruct-time strategy, defining a lambda(update) calculus with simple primitives to provide type-safe updating of running code. We thereby establish primitives and a common semantic foundation for a variety of real-world dynamic rebinding requirements.

We propose a unified framework for coordination in multiuser Virtual Worlds, based on our experience with LogiMOO, a BinProlog+Linda based programmable shared Virtual World. LogiMOO adopts unification for pattern retrieval while using exclusively deterministic operations, unlike mast Prolog based Linda systems. Moving beyond the Linda framework LogiMOO is based on, we describe a coordination logic for agent programming based on ideas from (affine) linear logic and Java's synchronized object system as well as a set of new primitives describing uniformly Linda operation, database updates and hypothetical assumptions. The main novelty is that our constructs emphasize an 'object based' approach, with synchronization information built in 'container objects' and allowing more flexible wait/notify negotiations between consumer/producer agent components, as well as inheritance and agent component reuse. Our experiments with agent coding in LogiMOO and Java and interaction with external visual and logic components, show the practicality of our constructs for real life programming.

Web Services combine the best of both distributed componentization and the World Wide Web [3]. It brings distributed computing to broad range of client applications. Web Services allow access to software components through standard Web protocols such as HTTP, SMTP and XML. In short, a web service could be observed as a component running on the web server, exposed to the world through standard Internet protocols. Using XML and Internet Protocols concept of web service enables use of any technology, any language and any device for both server and client side in client - server model. Field of usage of web service is very large. Whenever there is a need of network communication for two applications, a web service can step in.

This paper introduces an implementation of resilient objects based solely on the conversation mechanism, in the framework of the CSP scheme. Every transaction over the object is defined as a conversation involving one or more external processes and one internal process that monitors the state of the object. The proposed implementation facilitates the distribution of the transaction code over a computer network, and also an automatic control of concurrency by enforcing an adequate "readers and writers" policy. Transactions are invoqued by procedure calls, but only message exchanges are actually done between different processors. © 1990.
