The need for flexible forms of serialisation arises under many circumstances, e.g. for doing high-level inter-process communication or to achieve persistence. Many languages, including variants of ML, thus offer pickling as a system service, but usually in a both unsafe and inexpressive manner, so that its use is discouraged. In contrast, safe generic pickling plays a central role in the design and implementation of Alice ML: components are defined as pickles, and modules can be exchanged between processes using pickling. For that purpose, pickling has to be higher-order and typed (HOT), i.e. embrace code mobility and involve runtime type checks for safety. We show how HOT pickling can be realised with a modular architecture consisting of multiple abstraction layers for separating concerns, and how both language and implementation benefit from a design consistently based on pickling.

Functional programming (FP) is regularly touted as the way forward for bringing parallel, concurrent, and distributed programming to the mainstream. The popularity of the rationale behind this viewpoint has even led to a number of object-oriented (OO) programming languages outside the Smalltalk tradition adopting functional features such as lambdas and thereby function closures. However, despite this established viewpoint of FP as an enabler, reliably distributing function closures over a network, or using them in concurrent environments nonetheless remains a challenge across FP and OO languages. This paper takes a step towards more principled distributed and concurrent programming by introducing a new closure-like abstraction and type system, called spores, that can guarantee closures to be serializable, thread-safe, or even have custom user-defined properties. Crucially, our system is based on the principle of encoding type information corresponding to captured variables in the type of a spore. We prove our type system sound, implement our approach for Scala, evaluate its practicality through a small empirical study, and show the power of these guarantees through a case analysis of real-world distributed and concurrent frameworks that this safe foundation for closures facilitates.

Actor model is an asynchronous message-passing model for fine-grained concurrency and distributed memory applications. However, it is inherently non-deterministic due to low-level synchronization primitives such as send and receive, leading to high-complexity and error-prone code when programming deterministic applications expressed by actors. In order to to support deterministic actor programming, this paper proposes a high-level programming model named distask. The core solution is to express complex synchronization in a simple and deterministic pattern by introducing features of functional programming. In detail, we design a set of composing operators on distasks in several pre-defined patterns called synchronization strategies. A distask can be composed of other distasks in a deterministic manner instead of non-deterministic communication within original actors. In addition, automatic distribution, scalability and fault handing features are supported to adapt to dynamic Cloud environment. We have implemented distask in a system called UniAS. The implementation language is Erlang, an actor-based industrial language. It is readily applied to several vital distributed memory applications with little compromise of performance.

We present a library for the specification and implementation of distributed protocols in native F# (and other. NET languages) based on multiparty session types (MPST). There are two main contributions. Our library is the first practical development of MPST to support what we refer to as interaction refinements: a collection of features related to the refinement of protocols, such as message-type refinements (value constraints) and message-value dependent control flow. A well-typed endpoint program using our library is guaranteed to perform only compliant session I/O actions w.r.t. to the refined protocol, up to premature termination. Second, our library is developed as a session type provider, that performs on-demand compile-time protocol validation and generation of protocol-specific. NET types for users writing the distributed endpoint programs. It is implemented by extending and integrating Scribble (a toolchain for MPST) with an SMT solver into the type providers framework. The safety guarantees are achieved by a combination of static type checking of the generated types for messages and I/O operations, correctness by construction from code generation, and automated inlining of assertions.

We present Ripple, an architecture and a programming model for a broad set of data analytics. Ripple builds on the ideas of iterated MapReduce and adds two innovations. First it has a richer programming model, including more ideas from the Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) model of computation and others. By doing so, Ripple creates a flexible and higher-level platform that is easier for both application programmers and platform implementors. Second, Ripple is based on a limited interface for key/value storage making it portable among many different key/value store implementations. By building on these two ideas Ripple improves the scope, performance, and openness of the data analytics platform. We evaluate Ripple using three representative, and non-trivial, data analysis scenarios requiring iterative computation. Using these examples, we show how Ripple achieves clear performance advantages over iterated MapReduce.

The competitiveness of the aviation maintenance companies is strictly connected to the security, the quality, the efficiency, the costs and the speed of the maintenance processes. This entails a critical role for the planning of maintenance activities. A specific resource allocation problem for aeronautical maintenance activities is described and a combination of a dynamic programming strategy and an agent-oriented approach for the planning of these activities is proposed. Since the dynamic programming algorithm presented is inherently parallelizable then a multi-agent strategy that allows distributed computing is *** A coordination mechanism guarantees the actions of multiple agents lead to a global solution. Agent-based methods inherently overcome the limitations of centralized load-balancing and they can adaptively execute on dynamic networks of workstations.

Current component-based approaches for distributed control systems enable the reuse of mechatronic components, for example specific grippers or conveyor belts, but do not allow full application reuse as the actual hardware configuration is an implicit part of the software solution. In contrast to the current object-oriented or component-based engineering models for automation engineering, this paper will introduce a new Model-Driven Architecture based application and hardware modeling approach. Through separation of the logical application domain and the specific hardware domain the logical application is completely independent of the concrete physical plant configuration. Therefore development time for automation applications can be vastly reduced and software quality can be improved.

This paper presents a prototype of a Virtual shared environment in which several users can interact inside a Three Dimensional scene. Actions of a user are visible to others thanks to a protocol of transmission parameters of the scene. The communications are managed under a protocol of distributed objects, the visualization as well as the user interface use multiplatform libraries. This prototype is used to teach the echographic gesture.

The foundation of a data processing engine running on a large cluster is its programming model that defines data processing operations and data movements. A special kind of communication activities that are not normally defined in the programming model but are often used in ad hoc ways in system development, is called out-of-band communications. The existing ad hoc solutions of out-of-band communications are often hard to reuse, error-prone, and not free from unwanted side effects. To address these issues, we have designed and implemented a standalone facility of out-of-band communications called SideWalk. With this facility, users can add out-of-band communication operations into their distributed data flows through a set of reusable APIs. These APIs have well defined semantics and thus, users' chances of writing error-prone programs with SideWalk are minimized. To prevent users from introducing unwanted side effects while using SideWalk, we prototype SideWalk to efficiently handle lightweight out-of-band communications and we restrict communication patterns that can be conducted through SideWalk without affecting the applicability of SideWalk on typical use cases. Our experimental results show that execution times of distributed data processing flows in a Hadoop environment with out-of-band communications implemented with SideWalk are reduced up to 1.53 times compared with that of distributed data processing flows with out-of-band communications implemented with a representative ad hoc solution.

When developing a (web) interface for a deductive database, functionality required by the client is provided by means of HTTP handlers that wrap the logical data access predicates. These handlers are responsible for converting between client and server data representations and typically include options for paginating results. Designing the web accessible API is difficult because it is hard to predict the exact requirements of clients. Pengines changes this picture. The client provides a Prolog program that selects the required data by accessing the logical API of the server. The pengine infrastructure provides general mechanisms for converting Prolog data and handling Prolog non-determinism. The Pengines library is small (2000 lines Prolog, 150 lines JavaScript). It greatly simplifies defining an AJAX based client for a Prolog program and provides non-deterministic RPC between Prolog processes as well as interaction with Prolog engines similar to Paul Tarau's engines. Pengines are available as a standard package for SWI-Prolog 7.(1)
