Frequent itemset mining (FIM) is an important topic in data mining, which extracts knowledge of the relationships among items in a transaction dataset. Apriori algorithm and its variants, apriori-like algorithms, are widely used FIM algorithms. However, in a big data environment, these algorithms are inefficient. Due to the iterative calculation and modification of intermediate results, if an apriori-like algorithm is applied on a high-dimension or large-scale dataset, the memory requirement is unacceptable for a single machine. Although parallel and distributed programming could be a solution to deal with big data problems, apriori-like algorithms are not quite suitable for parallel computing because they need extra time overhead of communication to update intermediate results iteratively in cluster memories. To solve this problem, we propose a novel FIM algorithm, distributed Apriori Based on Itemset-Encoding (DABIE). Different from existing methods, DABIE has two main advantages. Firstly, it stores intermediate results encoded in the form of 0 and 1 to reduce memory usage. Secondly, generating frequent itemsets is based on logical operation of encoding to reduce modification of data in cluster memories. These two advantages make DABIE more friendly to cluster computing. We apply DABIE on datasets with different scales. Compared with other distributed apriori-like algorithms, the results of our experiments show that DABIE can efficiently improve the multiiterative FIM in big data environment.

Pseudocode is a valuable resource used in programming education, software development, and scientific reports for designing algorithmic solutions as it is easy to write, understand, and modify. Since pseudocode is lacking in its ability to be tested, it is difficult to determine whether a pseudocode solution is correct or not. Software tools are specially required to reach this goal, e.g., helping professors find race conditions, deadlocks, or starvation issues while grading students' concurrent pseudocode. Although there are various tools to work with sequential pseudocode, there is a lack of tools to work with concurrent pseudocode. This shortage motivated us to determine the state-of-the-art in notations and tools for testing concurrent and distributed pseudocode. We conducted a systematic literature review and found only a few related publications, confirming that this topic is understudied. We found and report about five software tools capable of interpreting concurrent or distributed pseudocode, and two software tools capable of verifying its correctness. As another result, no other literature review was found about this topic, conferring novelty to the contributions of this work.

Web Services lack the possibility to exchange first-class objects as parameters and results. In current SOA practices, one has to give up years of experience in object-oriented programming, and return to procedural programming, passing as parameters XML data rather than objects. We propose to tackle this problem with our WS-object model which, by transmitting methods in XQuery, as well as data in XML, strives to combine Web Service calls with the power of object-oriented programming. Our concept reinterprets the basics of objects, state and behavior, within the XML world and is based on the use of interfaces and their implementation by classes generated at run-time to convert WS-objects into native language objects that can then be used by server- and client-side programs. WS-objects simplify decoupling, enhance the confidentiality of data and make Web Services more stable and resistant to changes. This paper introduces the WS-object concept and illustrates it with a first implementation in Java.

JavaScript is the predominant language when it comes to developing applications for the web. Many of today's web-based systems are implemented solely in JavaScript due to its applicability to both client and server-side development. This use of JavaScript as a general purpose programming language has sparked a number of efforts to provide programmers with the means to write parallel web applications. For the most parts these efforts have based themselves on actor-based parallelism, given the similarities between actors and the JavaScript runtime model. We argue that these solutions are based on actor models which do not optimally fit web development. Concretely, existing solutions fail to provide programmers with an actor framework which embraces both parallelism and distribution. To this end we present ***, an actor framework providing both high-level parallelism and built-in distribution. In ***, programmers can easily specify the coarse-grained parallelism needs of modern web applications. Moreover, ***' built-in distribution features allow programmers to express client/server, server/server and client/client distribution simply by using actors. We show the performance characteristics of our approach by detailing ***' results for the Savina benchmark suite.

Trust Models are used to enhance secure and reliable scheduling in distributed, Grid and Cloud environment. Trust models that are being proposed or implemented in distributed and Grid environment, does not fully fit in cloud computing environment. Since the parameters that have being taken into consideration in these trust models, does not fit in the cloud Infrastructure As A Service, a suitable trust model is proposed based on the existing model that is suitable for trust value management for the cloud IaaS parameters. Based on the above achieved trust values, a scheduling is done for better allocation of resources and further enhance the QOS of services been provided to the users. In this paper, an approach for managing trust in Cloud IaaS is proposed.

MapReduce is a widely adopted computing framework for data-intensive applications running on clusters. We propose an approach to exploit data parallelisms in XML processing using MapReduce in Hadoop. Our solution seam-lessly integrates data storage, labelling, indexing, and parallel queries to process a massive amount of XML data. Specifically, we introduce an SDN labelling algorithm and a distributed hierarchical index using DHTs;we develop an efficient data retrieval approach called B-SLCA. More importantly, we design an advanced two-phase MapReduce solution that is able to efficiently address the issues of labelling, indexing, and query processing on big XML data. We implemented our solution on a real-world Hadoop cluster processing the real-world datasets. Our experimental results show that SDN outperforms NCIM by up to a factor of 1.36 with an average of 1.17;our B-SLCA outperforms BwdSLCA by up to a factor of 1.96 with an average of 1.2.

Load balancing algorithm is used to distribute the load among various nodes in the distributed system to improve the resource utilization and request response time of the system. These algorithms are mainly used to overcome the situation where a node is heavily loaded and other nodes are idle and because of which the request fails. Many load balancing algorithms are being proposed in distributed and grid environment, but they do not take into consideration the trust and the reliability of the datacenter. In this paper, a suitable trust model is proposed based on the existing model that is suitable for trust value management for the cloud IaaS parameters. Based on the above achieved trust values, a suitable load balancing algorithm is proposed for better distribution of load which further enhance the QOS of services being provided to the users.

This paper presents a general purpose discrete event simulator, named SLEEP, that helps students to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the domain of Computer Architecture and Organization simulator design. The motivation for developing SLEEP is given after an analysis of simulators available in the open literature. The analysis is followed by implementation details explaining execution and simulation algorithms of SLEEP. Then, the SLEEP simulator features are briefly described. Finally, the performance evaluation with generated test workload is presented.

Among the size, weight and power constraints imposed by the CubeSat specification, the limitation associated with power can be addressed through a distributed computing architecture. This paper describes such a distributed computing architecture and its operational design in the form of command and data handling system and telemetry formulation, adapted for a CubeSat whose power requirements for proving the mission are significantly larger than the on-orbit average power generated. The 1U CubeSat with the mission objective of precision three axes attitude control is composed of a low power flight computer and a high power, high speed auxiliary processor (CMG controller), along with a high capacity battery. The precision sensors, actuators and complex computing algorithms, are interfaced and implemented on the high speed auxiliary processor, which is operated intermittently. Health monitoring sensors, transceiver and other housekeeping tasks are interfaced and implemented on the flight computer, which is in continuous operation. To facilitate effective operation and telemetry packaging, each computing unit is designed to host a storage device. The flight software, designed as operating modes, is distributed across the two computing platforms. distributed operations are initiated through the flight computer and executed on the auxiliary processor. The paper describes in detail the distributed design of these operating modes as flowcharts and the associated telemetry budget as tables.

Error in the UNITY substitution rule for subscripted operators

UNITY, introduced by Chandy and Misra [ChM88], is a programming logic intended to reason about temporal properties of distributed programs. Despite the fact that UNITY does not have the full power of, for example, linear temporal logic, it enjoys popularity due to its simplicity. There was however a serious problem with the Substitution Rule. The logic is incomplete without the rule, and with the rule it is inconsistent. Latterly Beverly Sanders introduced the concept of strongest invariant and proposed a new definition for UNITY [San91] that fixes the problem with the Substitution Rule. For the benefit of program union, she also introduced the concept of subscripted properties and claimed a generalized version of Substitution Rule for the subscripted properties. This report presents an example that shows that the latter claim is false. A proposal as how to fix this follows. © 1994 BCS.
