distributed applications are traditionally developed using separate modules for each component in the distributed system, which can even be written in different programming languages. Those modules react on events such as user input, which are produced by other modules, and may in turn produce new events to be handled by different modules. Thus, most distributed applications are reactive in nature. distributed event-based data flow makes it is hard to reason about the system and therefore makes the development of distributed systems challenging. In this paper, we present language abstractions for distributed reactive programming easing the development of such applications and supporting various distributed architectures.

Integrating the actor model into mainstream software platforms is challenging because typical runtime environments, such as the Java Virtual Machine, have been designed for very different concurrency models. Moreover, to enable integration with existing infrastructures, execution modes and constructs foreign to the pure actor model have to be supported. This paper provides an overview of past and current efforts to address these challenges in the context of the Scala programming language. TensorFlow is a machine learning system that operates at large scale and in heterogeneous environments. Its computational model is based on dataflow graphs with mutable state. Graph nodes may be mapped to different machines in a cluster, and within each machine to CPUs, GPUs, and other devices. TensorFlow supports a variety of applications, but it particularly targets training and inference with deep neural networks. It serves as a platform for research and for deploying machine learning systems across many areas, such as speech recognition, computer vision, robotics, information retrieval, and natural language processing. In this talk, we describe TensorFlow and outline some of its applications. We also discuss the question of what TensorFlow and deep learning may have to do with functional programming. Although TensorFlow is not purely functional, many of its uses are concerned with optimizing functions (during training), then with applying those functions (during inference). These functions are defined as compositions of simple primitives (as is common in functional programming), with internal data representations that are learned rather than manually designed. Evaluating high-level distributed language constructs

The paper investigates the impact of high level distributed programming language constructs on the engineering of realistic software components. Based on reengineering two non-trivial telecoms components, we compare two high-level distributed functional languages, ERLANG and GdH, with conventional distributed technologies C++/CORBA and C++/UDP. We investigate several aspects of high-level distributed languages including the impact on code size of high-level constructs. We identify three language constructs that primarily contribute to the reduction in application size and quantify their impact. We provide the first evidence based on analysis of a substantial system to support the widely-held supposition that high-level constructs reduce programming effort associated with specifying distributed coordination. We investigate whether a language with sophisticated high-level fault tolerance can produce suitably robust components, and both measure and analyse the additional programming effort needed to introduce robustness. Finally, we investigate some implications of a range of type systems for engineering distributed software.

Grid computing and peer-to-peer computing emerged as distinct areas with different purposes, models and tools. Over the last years, these areas has been converging since the infrastructure and the execution model used in peer-to-peer networks have proven to be a suitable way to treat some problems related to the maintenance of large scale grids, such as scalability, monitoring, and resource discovery and allocation. The MultiCluster model addresses the convergence of grids and peer-to-peer networks in a more restricted way: the problems related to scalability, resource allocation and discovery are minimized by considering only local resources for the conception of a small scale grid, which can be used to run applications with different characteristics of granularity and communication. The RS language is intended to the programming of centralized reactive kernels. Such kernels are responsible for the logic of a reactive system, manipulating the input signals, carrying through the reactions and generating the output signals. Being its initial idea to treat only centered processes, it did not have the concern with the distribution. The main objective of this work is to describe the process of creation of a new version for the Language and Compiler RS, that make possible the execution of distributed programs. Beyond the possibility of execution distributed reactive systems, it was added to RS language foreseen extensions already in its creation, as inhibiting signals, rules of manual exclusion and concurrence, the possibility of detonation of more than a rule in one exactly instant and the lexical cleanness of the RS code source. The modifications incorporated in this new version of the language, had been accomplished through a new compiler, called Compiler RS 5.0. The implemented archetype offers the generation of three formats of code: the standard format of RS language (the corresponding automatons and rules), codes in the language C for the simulation of the automatons and archives in OC portable format, that is a object format code standard for the reactive languages. For the distribution and implementation of Language RS was necessary the creation of a new kernel of communication of the MDX, that is responsible for the communication of RSD automatons. It is divided in three parts. The first one deals with the definition of a formal model that defines the necessary changes so that RS language obtains to work of distributed form, the second shows the design of new MDX kernel and third presents the implementation in C and MDX of the automatons generated for Compiler RS 5.0. Scalable Diversified Top-k Pattern Matching in Big Graphs

Typically, graph pattern matching is expressed in terms of subgraph isomorphism. Graph simulation and its variants were introduced to reduce the time complexity and obtain more meaningful results in big graphs. Among these models, the matching subgraphs obtained by tight simulation are more compact and topologically closer to the pattern graph than results produced by other approaches. However, the number of resulting subgraphs can be huge, overlapping each other and unequally relaxed from the pattern graph. Hence, we introduce a ranking and diversification method for tight simulation results, which allows the user to obtain the most diversified and relevant matching subgraphs. This approach exploits the weights on edges of the big graph to express the interest of the matching subgraph by tight simulation. Furthermore, we provide distributed scalable algorithms to evaluate the proposed methods based on distributed programming paradigms. The experiments on real data graphs succeed in demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed models and the efficiency of the associated algorithms. The result diversification reached 123% within a time frame that does not exceed 40%, on average, of the duration required for tight simulation graph pattern matching.

The advent of personal computers and, later, of workstations, along with the development of efficient and low-cost communication hardware has led to the popularization of local-area networks. However, distributed software did not experiment the same development of hardware, specially due to the complexity of distributed systems. The machine, system and communication network heterogeneity, inherent to the modern computing environments, is also responsible for the lack of integration and cooperation of available nodes. The purpose of this work is, from the analysis of the main aspects related to distribution and heterogeneity, to design a heterogeneous network operating system. Such system, named HetNOS (which stands for Heterogeneous Network Operating System), allows users to quickly write and validate distributed homogeneous and heterogeneous applications. Users can concentrate their work in the distributed aspects, abstracting communication mechanisms details, because programming of distributed applications is based on a homogeneous interface platform, easy to use and location-independent. Being a network operating system, HetNOS acts over the set of native operating systems; the environment is extended instead of substituted. There are neither centralized information nor entities, and the algorithms are always distributed, usually yielding more reliability and performance. The HetNOS topology is a logical ring, scheme adopted partly due to the generality of such configuration and partly to simplify the HetNOS distributed kernel design. The communication paradigm between modules is the message exchange, a mechanism implemented over the sockets network application programming interface. A Survey of Multitier programming

Multitier programming dealswith developing the components that pertain to different tiers in the system (e.g., client and server), mixing them in the same compilation unit. In this paradigm, the code for different tiers is then either generated at run time or it results from the compiler splitting the codebase into components that belong to different tiers based on user annotations, static analysis, types, or a combination of these. In the Web context, multitier languages aim at reducing the distinction between client and server code, by translating the code that is to be executed on the clients to JavaScript or by executing JavaScript on the server, too. Ultimately, the goal of the multitier approach is to improve program comprehension, simplify maintenance and enable formal reasoning about the properties of the whole distributed application. A number of multitier research languages have been proposed over the last decade, which support various degrees of multitier programming and explore different design tradeoffs. In this article, we provide an overview of the existing solutions, discuss their positioning in the design space, and outline open research problems.
