This paper introduces NetsBlox, a visual programming environment for learning distributed programming principles. Extending both the visual formalism and open source code base of Snap!, NetsBlox provides two accessible distributed programming abstractions to simplify the process of creating networked applications: message passing and Remote Procedure Calls (RPC). Messaging passing allows NetsBlox applications to send data to other connected NetsBlox clients. Remote Procedure Calls enable seamless integration of third party services, such as Google Maps, weather, traffic and other public domain data sources, into NetsBlox applications. Other RPCs help coordinating distributed clients which may be difficult for novice programmers allowing the user to more quickly create captivating and sophisticated applications. These abstractions empower users to develop networked programs, including multi-player games and client-server applications. By providing networking support, NetsBlox not only allows users to learn distribute programming concepts but also makes programming more engaging by incorporating diverse services available on the web.

Developers of modern distributed systems continuously face the impossibility result proved by the CAP theorem. In a nutshell, the theorem states that a partition-tolerant system can either guarantee consistency or availability. Most distributed programming languages implicitly make the choice between consistency or availability in their designs and implementations. Concretely, distributed programming languages can be roughly divided into two categories. A first category of languages provide abstractions to implement the consistent parts of a distributed system. A second category of languages provide abstractions to implement the available parts of a distributed system. However, real-world distributed systems often require consistency for some parts while requiring availability for others. Programmers are therefore forced to implement the abstractions missing from their chosen distributed programming language themselves or rely on external libraries. In this paper we present a novel distributed programming model. This model introduces two object-oriented abstractions: consistents and availables. The former guarantees strong consistency by sacrificing availability. The latter guarantees availability, but only provides eventual consistency. Through these constructs programmers are able to implement the entirety of their distributed system within the same language. We present a prototypical implementation of the model as a TypeScript library called ***. To showcase the usefulness of our approach we implement a non-trivial example application. Moreover, we highlight both the functional as well as the performance characteristics of both language abstractions.

The main purpose of this article is to present investigation connected with possibilities of using Voyager((TM)) for efficient distributed programming. Voyager is a complex Java tool, made by Objectspace, which integrates different technologies such as RMI, CORBA, and Mobile Agent Technology. During the work I have created an isolated local network, written a test application and databases and after I've made some efficiency tests. I have compared two different kinds of communication between hosts (different and the same architectures) with databases based on standard ORB communication and by introducing mobility for objects. I would like to find an answer for the question: "If and when mobility is better titan classical client-server model for communication?"

We face a glut of languages for programming distributed software today. However, only a few languages have proven their potential with wider practical use in different domains of computing. We picked two such languages, meant for different domains, to see if they could cross-pollinate and enrich one another. Specifically, we chose SystemJ, a language to program distributed embedded systems, and IEC61499, the next generation standard for distributed industrial automation control software. Unsurprisingly, we found similar structures and artifacts between the two. We also found significant differences mainly due to differing domain-specific requirements. This comparison leads to observations and guidelines for improving both languages, and we discuss directions towards an "ideal" distributed software programming language.

In this paper we introduce the JavaSpaces NetBeans IDE (JSN) which integrates the Java Spaces technology, an implementation of Linda principles in Java, with the NetBeans(1) IDE. JSN is a didactic tool for practical assignments during distributed programming courses. It hides advanced aspects of Java Spaces configuration and lets students focus on inter-process coordination. An important component of JSN is a distributed debugger which can help to make concurrent programming classes easier to understand and more compelling.

The long-term vision of an Internet of Things (IoT) is approaching reality and leading hardware vendors expect shipment of 50 billion devices in the near future. Emerging Internet standards will enable this huge number of embedded machines to interconnect and cooperate-and raise the challenge of building suitable software environments that provide scalability, reliability, and security at an efficient level. In this paper, we introduce such an approach-a modified actor model and a corresponding runtime environment. In contrast to common tools, it offers a higher level of abstraction to design and program applications for constrained devices, while remaining efficient, reliable, and open to include the security extensions from the agenda of the IETF.

Parallel and distributed programming involve substantial amounts of boilerplate code for process management and data synchronisation. This leads to increased bug potential and often results in unintended non-deterministic program behaviour. Moreover, algorithmic details are mixed with technical details concerning parallelisation and distribution. Process calculi are formal models for parallel and distributed programming but often leave details open, causing a gap between formal model and implementation. We propose a fully deterministic process calculus for parallel and distributed programming and implement it as a domain specific language in Haskell to address these problems. We eliminate boilerplate code by abstracting from the exact notion of parallelisation and encapsulating it in the implementation of our process combinators. Furthermore, we achieve correctness guarantees regarding process composition at compile time through Haskell's type system. Our result can be used as a high-level tool to implement parallel and distributed programs.

NetsBlox is a new collaborative learning environment extending Snap! with a few carefully selected abstractions that enable students to create distributed applications. In today's interconnected world, it will become increasingly important to have a basic understanding of computer networking and distributed computation yet these topics are rarely covered in K-12 curricula. Conversely, NetsBlox makes distributed programming accessible to beginner programmers using its simple yet powerful visual programming primitives, an intuitive user interface and a sophisticated cloud-based infrastructure. Moreover, the tool enables students to work together on the same project from different computers similarly to how Google Docs operate. This feature enables online collaboration and facilitates new ways to teach and learn programming. By allowing students to create multi-player games, NetsBlox provides increased motivation and is likely to prove engaging to students. By providing access to online public domain data sources, such as weather, earthquake, and air pollution data, in a unified manner, students will be able to create interesting science projects in a number of STEM fields promoting interdisciplinary learning. This technology demonstration will introduce the environment and demonstrate its utility in creating multi-player games, such as Battleship and Tic Tac Toe, as well as highlight two client-server applications that display weather and historical earthquake data, respectively, on top of an interactive Google Maps background. Audience members will be asked to participate in a massively parallel volunteer computing application doing prime factorization of large numbers. By requiring communication to take place using explicit message passing, the actor model has been shown to be an effective tool for building distributed systems. However, communication in the actor model has traditionally been untyped, i. e. any message can be sent to an actor, even though it most probably only handles specific ones. Singly typed actors have a single static type assigned to each actor, limiting messages to those that can be handled by the actor. We present M act, a formal model of singly typed actors, implemented as a shallow embedding in Agda. The shallow embedding allows for a minimal calculus that does not sacrifice usability, since programs are expressed using the full power of Agda- a deep embedding would not have allowed for the same experimental investigation without significantly more effort. We use this advantage to demonstrate how several common communication patterns can be expressed as abstractions inside the model. We implement and compare implementation strategies for out of order communication-the foundation of the abstractions we build. With out of order communication we are able to emulate local channels, which we use to implement synchronous calls and active objects. Like He (2014), we find that subtyping solves the problem of wide actor types when sending messages. However, the use of a single inbox per actor remains problematic when receiving messages, especially in the context of call-response patterns. Our emulation of local channels alleviates the problem of wide actor types, but we still propose extending the model with native support for multiple inboxes per actor as a better solution.

Render Farm for Highly Realistic Images in a Beowulf Cluster using distributed programming Techniques

Now-a-days, photorealistic images are demanded for the realization of scientific models, so we use rendering tools that convert three-dimensional models into highly realistic images. The problem of generating photorealistic images occurs when the three-dimensional model becomes larger and more complex, so the time to generate an image is much greater due to the limitations of hardware resources, about this problem is implemented the render farm, which consists in a set of computers interconnected by a high-speed network that provides a strip of the global image distributed in each participating computers with the intention of reducing the processing time of highly complex computational images. The research was implemented in a high-performance Beowulf group of the Universidad de Ciencias y Humanidades using a total of 18 computers. To demonstrate the efficiency of a rendering farm implementation, scalability tests were performed using a 360 degrees equirrectangular model with a total of 67 million pixels, the work is carried out to achieve highly complex renderings in less time to benefit the direction of the research.
