This paper describes the software package DPLab which implements an integrated GUI environment for developing distributed programs. The environment includes a text editor, a compiler, and a runtime system that establishes communications between networked computers and provides primitives for message passing between the computers. The source language is Pascal extended with these primitives and with constructs for concurrent programming. The package is implemented in Java and Swing for portability.

The importance of concurrent and distributed programming is increasing on Computer Science curricula. This exploratory research identifies additional notions required by the official topics of "Parallel and Concurrent programming" course, taught at the University of Costa Rica. This paper characterizes previous knowledge that students had about these notions and the extracurricular effort that they made to overcome the lack of notions. Findings show that students were able to overcome the lack of notions at expense of more extracurricular effort. Exploratory evidence indicates that students' election of professors in previous courses influenced their performance and extracurricular effort in the parallel programming course.

The pipeline structure is intuitive design pattern for parallel and distributed programming. However it has some limitations so that it can not be applied effectively, especially in the distributed environment. This paper describes a distributed pipeline programming framework (DPPF) for state-based pattern. DPPF makes use of the slate-based pipeline design pattern and Object-Oriented technology to design pipeline. In DPPF the pipeline stage is regard as an object that be passed between two compute nodes with its state. Message-passing method is replaced object-passing method through Java socket for information transmission. For the state pattern, all compute nodes are separated from the pipeline control flow Information transmission that runs in the background is transparent for the programmer So programmers are more easily to design pipeline structure for distributed programming. In addition, it is effective to improve the performance and dynamic load balance for some coarse-grained applications.

The most successful systems for "big data" processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate on which to build data-centric distributed systems. A key idea is to build up a persistent functional data structure representing transformations on distributed immutable data by passing well-typed serializable functions over the wire and applying them to this distributed data. Thus, the function passing model can be thought of as a persistent functional data structure that is distributed, where transformations to data are stored in its nodes rather than the distributed data itself. The model simplifies failure recovery by design-in the event of a failure, data is recovered by replaying function applications atop immutable data loaded from stable storage. Deferred evaluation is also central to our model;by incorporating deferred evaluation into our design only at the point of initiating network communication, the function passing model remains easy to reason about while remaining efficient in time and memory. We formalize our programming model using small-step operational semantics, and we provide an open-source implementation of our model in and for the Scala programming language, along with a case study of several example frameworks and end-user programs written atop of this model.

Reactive programming improves the design of reactive applications by relocating the logic for managing dependencies between dependent values away from the application logic to the language implementation. Many distributed applications are reactive. Yet, existing change propagation algorithms are not suitable in a distributed setting. We propose distributed REScala, a reactive language with a change propagation algorithm that works without centralized knowledge about the topology of the dependency structure among reactive values and avoids unnecessary propagation of changes, while retaining safety guarantees (glitch freedom). distributed REScala enables distributed reactive programming, bringing the benefits of reactive programming to distributed applications. We demonstrate the enabled design improvements by a case study. We also empirically evaluate the performance of our algorithm in comparison to other algorithms in a simulated distributed setting.

Quadratic optimization problems appear in several interesting estimation, learning and control tasks. To solve these problems in peer-to-peer networks it is necessary to design distributed optimization algorithms supporting directed, asynchronous and unreliable communication. This paper addresses this requirement by extending a promising distributed convex optimization algorithm, known as Newton-Raphson consensus, and originally designed for static and undirected communication. Specifically, we modify this algorithm so that it can cope with asynchronous, broadcast and unreliable lossy links, and prove that the optimization strategy correctly converge to the global optimum when the local cost functions are quadratic. We then support the intuition that this robustified algorithm converges to the true optimum also for general convex problems with dedicated numerical simulations.

A visual programming environment for introducing distributed computing to secondary education

The paper introduces a visual programming language and corresponding web and cloud-based development environment called NetsBlox. NetsBlox is an extension of Snap! and builds upon its visual formalism as well as its open source code base. NetsBlox adds distributed programming capabilities by introducing two well-known abstractions to block-based programming: message passing and Remote Procedure Calls (RPC). Messages containing data can be exchanged by two or more NetsBlox programs running on different computers connected to the Internet. RPCs are called on a client program and are executed on the NetsBlox server. These two abstractions make it possible to create distributed programs such as multi-player games or client-server applications. We believe that NetsBlox not only teaches basic distributed programming concepts but also provides increased motivation for high-school students to become creators and not just consumers of technology. Reactors: A data-oriented synchronous/asynchronous programming model for distributed applications

Our aim is to define the kernel of a simple and uniform programming model-the reactor model-which can serve as a foundation for building and evolving internet-scale programs. Such programs are characterized by collections of loosely-coupled distributed components that are assembled on the fly to produce a composite application. A reactor consists of two principal components: mutable state, in the form of a fixed collection of relations, and code, in the form of a fixed collection of rules in the style of Datalog. A reactor's code is executed in response to an external stimulus, which takes the form of an attempted update to the reactor's state. As in classical process calculi, the reactor model accommodates collections of distributed, concurrently executing processes. However, unlike classical process calculi, our observable behaviors are sequences of states, rather than sequences of messages. Similarly, the interface to a reactor is simply its state, rather than a collection of message channels, ports, or methods. One novel feature of our model is the ability to compose behaviors both synchronously and asynchronously. Also, our use of Datalog-style rules allows aspect-like composition of separately-specified functional concerns in a natural way. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

THE SOMA - A programming CONSTRUCT FOR distributed-PROCESSING

A programming construct called ''soma'' (software machine) is proposed. A soma is an active program component that unifies the process and monitor constructs and that can communicate directly with other somas by exchanging messages via ''mailboxes.'' The soma construct is well suited for implementation on conventional and distributed computer architectures. The proposed ''mailbox'' construct has asymmetric synchronization properties, i.e. only the receive operation can be delayed; sending a message to a full mailbox is considered a program error. In a general purpose computer with a distributed architecture, the network should enable communication between any pair of processors.

Parallelizing RNA-Seq Analysis with BioSkel: A FastFlow Based Prototype

Over the past decade, the widespread adoption of RNA-seq methodology for transcript-level monitoring has resulted in a surge of biological data requiring comprehensive analysis. The BioSkel project aims to develop a framework for RNA sequencing analysis on multi/many-core machines. This framework relies on generic and modular high-level parallel patterns, enabling biologists to customize their data processing to their specific needs while abstracting away the complexities of parallelization. In this study, we introduce the initial prototype of BioSkel for RNA sequencing analysis, which comprises three main steps: sequence alignment, feature counting, and differential expression analysis. This prototype leverages FastFlow as a back-end for parallelizing the execution, either in shared- and distributed-memory. We provide experimental validations of our approach, considering different architectures and dataset sizes. As a valuable byproduct, we introduce a distributed HPC version of Bowtie2 tool, the first publicly available to our knowledge.
