Since late 1990s, the increasing number of complex and knowledge based industries in one hand, and formation of IT-based communications on the other hand, have raised the possibility of communication in international projects between different groups from several countries around the world. Nowadays, the emergence of multinational and massive scale projects is increasing. For such projects, traditional and routine frameworks should be replaced by some new concepts such as mega projects, distributed projects and GVT (Global Virtual Teams). Although conflicts are natural and inevitable in the distributed projects, inadequate attention to proper management of conflict, specifically in distributed projects facing with several sources of conflicts, can lead to ineffectiveness of such projects. So, the purpose of our research is to investigate and classify the sources of conflicts in distributed projects and to develop the methods to manage the identified conflicts. Data was gathered using questionnaires and interviews. Results indicated three elements including team members, process and technology as the main factors causing conflict in distributed projects. At the end, some future orientations have been suggested for future research.

Much effort has been spent to investigate the organization of distributed teams and their collaboration patterns. It is, however, not fully understood to which extent and how agile software processes are feasible to support distributed software projects. Practices and challenges that arise from the demands for communication are often in scope of current research. Still, it remains unclear what is necessary to monitor a project and to track its progress from a management perspective. A solution is to monitor projects and their progress on basis of the current quality of the created artifacts according to a given reference model that defines the artifacts and their dependencies. In this paper, we present an artifact model for agile methods that results from of a systematic literature review. The contribution serves as an empirically grounded definition of process interfaces to coordinate projects and to define exchanged artifacts while abstracting from the diverse local software processes.

This research would be able to study if formalising project management is feasible. With this research an attempt is made to define and describe the models for complete PMBOK standard taking into consideration all the process and knowledge management areas. This research will focus on the use of UML and OCL for creating model driven project management using PMBOK as base. Some previous research has been done to build simple models that for one process or knowledge management area and even that does not make use of model driven UML and OCL concepts. These research works focussed on creating more of structured flow rather than object models. This research focuses on PMBOK since more than 68% of the projects around the world use PMBOK for managing projects. The research problem to be addressed are: Feasibility of defining/ formalisation of PMBOK processes, defining meta models for core PMBOK processes, Define mapping of meta models to PMBOK, high level models for Program Management, Onshore/ offshore management, Change Management, due diligence, IT Service management. Analyse the application of proposed formal methods/ models in one or two case studies and do the Fit/Gap analysis to document the shortcomings/ gaps with respect to the compliance to PMBOK 5th Edition. The benefits of having meta-models will include support for defining tools for project management, deliverables and documentation, and to improve consistency between different areas and processes of PMBOK. It will potentially benefit other projects as the tools, documents and deliverables can be reused. This will make project monitoring and controlling easier during the execution and whole life cycle of the project. The final advantage will come in the form of delivering good quality project on time, budget and scope with improved quality and reliability.

Personal communication between User-Centered Design (UCD) specialists and developers is important for communicating user needs and design solutions in agile development. In distributed projects where opportunities for personal communication are limited, the design documentation is an important surrogate. This study has investigated the perceived effectiveness of boundary objects in a distributed agile team, and their role in communicating target user needs. Six in-depth interviews with UCD specialists showed that the boundary objects rarely communicate underlying needs of the users but rather focus on interaction with the system that is being developed. The used boundary objects also do not work as stand-alone deliverables;they need to be explained and elaborated. Making the boundary objects comprehensive enough to be stand-alone is seen as too time consuming and not worth the effort. For agile projects with distributed teams, this creates hand-over and follow-up problems.

Today, projects involve members from different geographical areas more than any other time in history. Thus, adequate Collaborative Project Management Software (CollabPMS) solutions are needed to enable individuals and organizations to manage, communicate and work together across time and space barriers. This article describes a set of managerial and collaborative functionalities that a CollabPMS should provide to support the complexities of a distributed project effectively. Out of hundreds software packages available in the market, four were selected, ProjectLibre, Redmine, Microsoft Project 2013 and Clarizen, to assess if they have the described functionalities. Clarizen can be considered the best software for managing distributed projects, because it provides, by default, all the managerial functions and the collaborative features that support the coordinated collaboration level. ProjectLibre was the software that less stood out in this evaluation, although it provides the majority of the outlined managerial functionalities it doesn't support any level of collaboration.

The organization of projects with distributed teams is a demanding task for every project manager. Requirements need to be collected, documented, and discussed, and the resulting tasks must be distributed to the responsible sites. These activities require an efficient and continuous communication. Furthermore, it is necessary to monitor a project and to track its progress from a management perspective. As a solution, we opt for a monitoring strategy that is based on the project artifacts and corresponding reports. For this, we defined in a previous work a generic artifact model for agile methods to enable seamless communication and data exchange between projects and teams. In this paper, we present a concrete instance aiming at providing the backbone of the information and data exchange subsystem of a SaaS-based collaborative project management and governance software for distributed software development. We present the artifact model, give insights into its development, and discuss its feasibility. Our findings show that while the previously defined reference model adequately reflects basic concepts and thus allows for coupling distributed projects, we need to refine the artifact model to emphasize project management/governance and its implementation in tools.
