Jobshop scheduling is a typical NP hard problem. In the distributed manufacturing environment, it becomes a more intractable one with the characters of distributed object, multiple target and strong dynamic. A novel distribution jobshop scheduling method based on multi-agent mechanism and genetic algorithm is presented. A distributed scheduling system framework, which composed of several jobshop agents, task agents, and resource agents, is established firstly. With the distribution of agents, the complex distributed scheduling problem is transformed into several sub-problems, such as local optimization scheduling of individual agent and global optimization of the multi-agent system. Then, a hybrid genetic algorithm is elaborated to support agents to do their scheduling decisions. In order to further improve capacities of the algorithm, a new solution is proposed, which allowing agents to participate in the optimizing process of the genetic algorithm. Finally, a prototype system for multi-shop distributed scheduling is developed and the simulation results are given to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the approach.

We study the wireless scheduling problem in the physically realistic SINR model. More specifically: we are given a set of n links, each a sender-receiver pair. We would like to schedule the links using the minimum number of slots, using the SINR model of interference among simultaneously transmitting links. In the basic problem, all senders transmit with the same uniform power. In this work, we provide a distributed O(log n)-approximation for the scheduling problem, matching the best ratio known for centralized algorithms. This is based on an algorithm studied by Kesselheim and Vocking, improving their analysis by a logarithmic factor. We show this to be best possible for any such distributed algorithm. Our analysis extends also to linear power assignments, and as well as for more general assignments, modulo assumptions about message acknowledgement mechanisms.

Opportunistic scheduling monitors the receivers' channel states and schedules packets to the receivers in relatively good channel conditions. Opportunistic scheduling can be easily implemented in cellular networks such as the 1xEVDO system because the channel state report function is embedded in the system. To apply opportunistic scheduling to WLANs, deficient of channel report functions, we first devise efficient channel probing mechanisms. Several opportunistic scheduling methods for WLANs have been proposed recently. These previous methods limit the candidate receivers and may not fully realize the potential multiuser diversity gains. In this paper., we develop new opportunistic scheduling called WDOS (Wireless LAN distributed Opportunistic scheduling). That is based on a modified RTS/CTS exchange scheme. In WDOS, a sender broadcasts a BRTS (Broadcast RTS) to all receivers. A receiver responds with a CTS after a backoff delay. The value of the backoff delay is determined such that the receivers in relatively better channel conditions acquire channel accesses. We evaluate the performance of WDOS both via an analytic method and via computer simulations. Our performance study shows that WDOS achieves the performance near optimal.

We study a distributed version of the order scheduling problem that arises when scheduling memory requests in shared DRAM systems of many-core architectures. In this problem, a Set Of n. Customer orders needs to be scheduled oil multiple facilities. An order call consist of multiple requests, each of which has to be serviced on one designated facility, and all order is completed only when all its requests have been serviced. In the distributed setting, every facility has its own request buffer and must schedule the requests having only limited knowledge about the buffer state at other facilities. In this paper, we quantify the trade-off between the amount of communication among different facilities and file quality of file resulting global solution. We show that without communication, the average completion time of all orders call be by a factor worse than in the optimal schedule. On the other hand, there exists a 2-approximation algorithm if the complete buffer states are exchanged in n. rounds. We then prove a general upper bound that characterizes the region between these extreme points. Specifically, we devise a distributed scheduling algorithm that, For any k, achieves an approximation ratio of O(k) in n/k communication rounds. Finally, we empirically test the performance of our different algorithms in a many-core environment using SPEC CPU2006 benchmarks as well as Windows desktop application traces.

We consider the resource allocation of centralized and distributed scheduling in the two-hop relaying cellular system. The limited spectrum resource is one of the obstacles which conflicts with the evolution of being wider coverage and larger capacity in the wireless system. In this paper, system performance and signaling overhead are analyzed and compared. Then we propose a novel routing strategy for choosing the access link and three practical scheduling strategies. Simulation results are provided and analyzed in several scenarios, which show the benefit of adopting the relay technique.

We provide a distributed solution to the scheduling of slots over multiple channels in low power wireless sensor networks organized in data gathering tree which are the topologies that are expected to be deployed in the Internet of Things (IoT). Our solution generates a dynamic and distributed schedule that achieves high throughput, low packet errors and collisions, as well as low energy consumption by avoiding deafness and reducing both overhead and overhearing. In our solution, nodes do not communicate large numbers of control message as local topology construction is only based on local link exchange to construct 2-hop neighborhood. To reach our goal, we chose to make use of Combinatorial Design theory, particularly Block Design. Within Block Design, we particularly focused on Latin Squares/Latin Rectangles (LS/LR), and Balanced Incomplete Block Design (BIBD). We evaluate the performance of our solution by comparing it with DiSCA (distributed scheduling for Convergecast in Multichannel WSN) and show that we obtain better results in terms of throughput, packet delivery rate, and energy consumption. Our results are based on our implementation of both protocols on NS-3.26.

distributed scheduling problems are challenging tasks to researchers and practitioners that have been gaining increasing popularity over the years. This is partly attributed to the fact that multi-site production and networked manufacturing environments are increasing as a consequence of globalisation. In this paper a system for technologies integration for supporting distributed scheduling in a Virtual Enterprise, by combining a simulation-based approach, with the Hungarian algorithm, for solving job-shop scheduling problems is presented, in order to show how we can benefit from this combination of procedures for distributed manufacturing scheduling.

Recent regulations have explicitly endorsed the provision of ancillary services by Microgrids (MGs). However, the associated technical requirements (e.g. minimum power reserve) still represent an impeding factor for most MGs given their reduced capability. For this reason, approaches to pool MGs into Aggregators, allowing to jointly coordinate MGs to fulfill such requirements, have been proposed but their practical feasibility has been not proved. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to test a previously proposed distributed day-ahead scheduling algorithm on a realistic benchmark with ABB e-meshT EMS, an industrial-grade MG energy management system. The results show that the approach can deal systematically with different MG units and controllers, maintaining its scalable and optimal performances.

Multiproduct batch plant scheduling problems arise in various industries, such as fine chemical, pharmaceutical, rubber, food, and daily cosmetics industries. To remain competitive in such a global economy, the modern production mode has shifted from a single factory to a multi-factory production network. Thus, distributed batch scheduling has attracted wide attention. To address the distributed batch scheduling with multiproduct and multi-factory production networks, we consider minimizing the global makespan over all factories and propose a biogeography-based optimization algorithm combined with heuristics to find the optimal production plan and enhance productivity. First, the time key encoding scheme and the First Come First Served rule have been adopted to improve the search efficiency. Then, the power of this heuristic rule has been enhanced by changing the production sequence based on the sequence of other stages instead of only the first stage. Besides, a high-efficient heuristic has been proposed to balance the load of different factories. The proposed algorithm is compared with three algorithms, and simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on distributed multiproduct batch plant scheduling problems.

In recent years, data-driven intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have developed rapidly and brought various AI-assisted applications to improve traffic efficiency. However, these applications are constrained by their inherent high computing demand and the limitation of vehicular computing power. Vehicular edge computing (VEC) has shown great potential to support these applications by providing computing and storage capacity in close proximity. For facing the heterogeneous nature of in-vehicle applications and the highly dynamic network topology in the Internet-of-Vehicle (IoV) environment, how to achieve efficient scheduling of computational tasks is a critical problem. Accordingly, we design a two-layer distributed online task scheduling framework to maximize the task acceptance ratio (TAR) under various QoS requirements when facing unbalanced task distribution. Briefly, we implement the computation offloading and transmission scheduling policies for the vehicles to optimize the onboard computational task scheduling. Meanwhile, in the edge computing layer, a new distributed task dispatching policy is developed to maximize the utilization of system computing power and minimize the data transmission delay caused by vehicle motion. Through single-vehicle and multi-vehicle simulations, we evaluate the performance of our framework, and the experimental results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms. Moreover, we conduct ablation experiments to validate the effectiveness of our core algorithms.
