Wireless Information and Energy Transfer in MIMO Communication With Interference Channels

In this paper, we consider a wireless information and energy transfer (WIET) system, which consists of multiple information transmitter-receiver pairs, and multiple additional energy transmitters to improve the energy transfer. For such a new WIET system, we investigate the energy effciency (EE) under two different setups, respectively: the information transmitters and energy transmitters use the same and different frequency bands. For each setup, we propose a novel centralized beamformer design method to solve the EE maximization problem, which can be transformed into a convex optimization problem using semidedefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. Moreover, we develop a distributed optimization algorithm to solve the SDR approximation formulation for each setup. Simulation results show that the same frequency setup can achieve larger EE value and less computational complexity, however, suffering from lower sum rate. For each setup, the distributed scheme has slightly worse performance than the centralized one, while enjoys less computational complexity, especially when the number of the additional energy transmitters is large.

Future-generation radio access networks (RAN) are projected to fulfill the diverse requirements of user equipment (UE) by adopting a heterogeneous network (HetNet) environment. Necessary integration of different radio access technologies (RAT), such as 2G, 3G, 4G, wireless local area network (WLAN), and visible light communication (VLC) is inevitable. Moreover, UEs equipped with diverse requirements will be capable of accessing some or all the RATs. The complex HetNet environment with diverse requirements of UEs will present many challenges. The HetNet is likely to suffer severely from load imbalance among the base stations (BSs) from inheriting the traditional user association scheme such as max-SINR (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio)/max-RSSI (received signal strength indicator), unless some sophisticated schemes are invented. In this paper, a novel scheme is devised for a joint-user association for load balancing, where BSs are densely deployed and UEs typically have a certain degree of mobility. Unlike most of the present works, a dynamic network is considered where the position and channel condition of the UEs are not fixed. We develop two complex and distributed association schemes based on probability and d-choices, while carefully considering both loads of the BSs and SINR experienced by the UEs. Numerical results validate the efficiency of the proposed schemes by showing a received data-rate fairness among UEs and an improvement in the UE's minimum received data rate.

Energy-efficient radio resource allocation in software-defined wireless sensor networks

The software-defined wireless sensor networks (SDWSNs) have been proposed recently to solve the energy limitation of sensor nodes and extend the lifetime of the wireless sensor networks by fast node reconstruction and dynamical resource allocation. In this study, the authors investigate an energy-efficient resource allocation algorithm in SDWSNs, in which radio resource allocation could be handled at central controllers with powerful storage and computation capacity. In this algorithm, the authors formulate an optimisation problem to minimise the energy consumption, under the individual constraint of quality of service. Then, the initial optimisation problem is transformed using semidefinite relaxation, to achieve centralised adaptive bandwidth and power allocation (CABPA). Additionally, two special cases are derived to reveal the performance of the CABPA. Furthermore, an OpenFlow-based scheme is proposed for information exchanging and updating to realise the centralised resource allocation. Meanwhile, a distributed scheme with limited information about the whole network is developed to serve as a performance benchmark for the CABPA in the SDWSN. Finally, the simulation results reveal that the proposed CABPA performs better than the other algorithms, and it balances the power and bandwidth utilisation.

A distributed Mode Selection scheme for Device-to-Device Communications

The introduction of device-to-device (D2D) communication may provide higher energy efficiency and spectrum efficiency to the traditional cellular network. One important question coming out of this introduction is how to select the transmission mode for user equipment (UE). In this work, we investigate the mode selection problem in a distributed way which gives a rule for determining the transmitter to use cellular transmission or D2D transmission. Firstly, the link performances are analyzed for UE under cellular transmission mode and D2D transmission mode, respectively, and closed-form expressions are presented. Then the optimum mode selection metric is derived to maximize the successful transmission probability for the transmission link. Lastly, a distributed mode selection scheme is proposed which can determine the transmission mode by UE itself without frequent information exchanges. In addition, the link performance can be optimized by using this scheme. Simulation results show that the link performance is dependent on many wireless environment factors such as numbers of existing D2D links and cellular links, channel quality, decoding threshold at the receiver and power control. However, the optimum link performance can be achieved by the proposed scheme under these different deployment conditions and wireless environments. Compared with the random mode selection methods, the proposed scheme can at most improve the link performance by seven times .

Some applications of the interconnected embedded systems such as sensor networks rely on all nodes in the network to execute certain tasks simultaneously. To meet this demand for simultaneity, a multi-timer model based fully distributed task synchronization algorithm is proposed in this paper. In this multi-timer model, each node containing an embedded system is characterized by a timer. The microcontrollers (MCUs) within the interconnected embedded systems are switched to the assigned tasks by timer interrupts. Each timer decides when to trigger interrupts by only using the information from its neighbors. Task synchronization is realized by using the proposed synchronization algorithm. Some simulation examples are presented in the end to verify the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization algorithm.

A fully distributed replica allocation scheme for an opportunistic network

An opportunistic network (OPPNET) consists of diverse mobile nodes with various mobility patterns. Numerous mobility patterns and the resource constraints of mobile nodes lead to network partitioning that result in system performance degradation including low data accessibility. In a traditional mobile ad hoc network (MANET) which is similar to an OPPNET, replica allocation schemes have been proposed to increase data accessibility. Although the schemes are efficient in a MANET, they may not be directly applicable to an OPPNET because the schemes are based on a grouping of mobile nodes. It is very difficult to build groups based on network topology in an OPPNET because a node in an OPPNET does not keep its network topology information. In this paper, we propose a novel replica allocation scheme for an opportunistic network called the Snooping-based Fully distributed replica allocation scheme. The proposed scheme allocates replicas in a fully distributed manner without grouping to reduce the communication cost, and fetches allocated replicas utilizing a novel candidate list concept to achieve high data accessibility. In the proposed scheme, a node can fetch replicas opportunistically based on the candidate list. Consequently, the proposed replica allocation scheme achieves high data accessibility while reducing the communication cost significantly. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme reduces the communication cost and improves data accessibility over traditional schemes.

Interference coordination strategy based on Nash bargaining for small-cell networks

In this study, a distributed scheme based on the Nash bargaining model is designed to coordinate co-channel interference for small-cell networks. The authors consider a scenario that resource blocks can be reused among different small cells. Different to existing works where resource allocation is conducted at the base stations, they propose the scheme where user initialises resource bargaining request to the serving base station once its quality-of-service cannot be satisfied because of the severe co-channel interference from other users. Since the general bargaining problem is a non-linear integer optimisation, the genetic algorithm is utilised to solve it. They also develop a low-complexity bargaining model which only takes into account the strongest co-channel interference. Simulation results show that the proposed distributed scheme can effectively reduce the outage probability of users and improve the system throughput. In addition, the proposed low-complexity bargaining solution can achieve a close performance to the genetic algorithm-based solution.

Channel assignment schemes for cooperative spectrum sensing in multi-channel cognitive radio networks

In this paper, channel assignment for spectrum sensing is studied in multi-channel cognitive radio (CR) networks to maximize the number of channels satisfying sensing performance (called available channels). Beginning with a nonlinear integer programming problem, we derive the upper bound of optimal value through many-to-many assignment problem and then propose three algorithms for both centralized and distributed scenarios. In centralized case, a heuristic scheme is proposed based on the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) over all primary channels (PCs). Then, a greedy scheme is proposed to reduce the reported information from the CRs. In distributed case, a novel scheme with multi-round operation is designed following the coalitional game theory. In each round, each CR selects some PCs based on SNRs. Then, the CRs selecting the same channel play coalitional game, and thereby, multiple games are played concurrently over multiple channels. Finally, the best coalition for each channel is chosen among the formed coalitions to perform the cooperative spectrum sensing. The simulation results show that the proposed schemes can significantly increase the number of available channels. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying LTE-advanced have proven to be efficient in improving network performance and offloading the traffic of the base station. Through sharing radio resources with cellular users (CUs), D2D communications can significantly enhance the overall spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose a distributed cooperative D2D transmission scheme to improve the overall system throughput without deteriorating the quality of service of CUs. With cognitive capability, D2D users sense the cellular transmission and switch between the concurrent and cooperation modes in a decentralized way. In particular, D2D users transmit concurrently with the CUs during the initial cellular transmission timeslot, while D2D transmitters serve as relays to compensate for the degradation to the cellular transmissions in the cellular retransmission timeslot, referred to as cooperation mode. Two types of cooperation are exploited to improve the network performance: cooperation between CU and D2D pairs, and cooperation among D2D pairs. We derive exact closed-form expressions of both cellular throughput and D2D throughput over Rayleigh fading channels, and give the analysis of the network energy efficiency. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis and show the superiority of the proposed scheme.

In Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication networks, the signalling congest and complexity for resource allocation is becoming one of the most important problems that should be dealt with the increasing of network scale. In this context, a clustering transmission strategy for the large-scale M2M networks has been proposed in this paper. To make the scheme can be carried out in distributed way, a joint network topology formation and resource allocation scheme based on coalition formation game has been proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can obtain a flexible tradeoff between communication QoS and network scheduling performance.
