Modeling and Stability Analysis of distributed secondary control Scheme for Stand-Alone DC Microgrid Applications

Stand-alone DC microgrids have multiple distributed generation (DG) sources that meet the required demand (load) by using droop control to achieve load (current) sharing between the DGs. The use of droop control leads to a voltage drop at the DC bus. This paper presents a distributed secondary control scheme to simultaneously ensure current sharing between the DGs and regulate the DC bus voltage. The proposed control scheme eliminates the voltage deviation and ensures balanced current sharing by combining the voltage and current errors in the designed secondary control loop. A new flight-based artificial bee colony optimization algorithm is proposed. This selects the parameters of the distributed secondary control scheme to achieve the objectives of the proposed controller. A state-space model of the DC microgrid is developed by using eigenvalue observation to test the impacts of the proposed optimized distributed secondary controller on the stability of the DC microgrid system. A real-time test system is developed in MATLAB/Simulink and used in a Speedgoat real-time simulator to verify the performance of the proposed control scheme for real-world applications. The results show the robustness of the proposed distributed secondary control scheme in achieving balance current sharing and voltage regulation in the DC microgrid with minimal oscillations and fast response time.

In this paper, the frequency/voltage restoration and active power sharing problems of islanded AC microgrids are studied. A novel distributed dynamic event-triggered secondary control scheme is proposed to reduce the communication burden. The continuous monitoring of event-triggered conditions and Zeno behavior can be fundamentally avoided by periodically evaluating event-triggered conditions. In addition, by introducing an adaptive coefficient related to the system deviations, the control performance can be improved. Sufficient conditions to ensure the stability of the system are provided through a Lyapunov function. Lastly, the effectiveness of our proposed secondary control scheme is verified in a MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment.

This paper proposes a distributed secondary control scheme with dynamic event-triggered protocol for multiple distributed generators (DGs) in an islanded microgrid. First of all, a dynamic event-triggered (DET) protocol is introduced for each DG unit to orchestrate the information transmission, which aims to save communication resources in the microgrid. The proposed event-triggered condition involves an internal dynamic variable, which is employed to dynamically adjust the event-triggered threshold. Then, under the schedule of the DET protocol, the distributed secondary controllers of the DGs are designed on the basis of the available information. The proposed secondary control scheme is completely distributed, which means that each DG only needs the information from itself and its neighbors, which reduces the requirements for the central controller and complex communication networks, and improves the reliability of the system. Meanwhile, it is proved that there is no Zeno behavior in the closed-loop system and the lower bound of the interevent time is enlarged due to the introduction of the dynamic event-triggered protocol. Subsequently, the similar idea is employed to deal with the distributed secondary frequency and load sharing problems. Finally, an illustrative example is utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme by using the MATLAB/SimPowerSystems toolbox.

distributed secondary control schemes are widely adopted for distributed energy resources (DERs) to restore bus voltages and share output current/power in DC microgrids. However, when the control variables of the conventional distributed secondary control is attacked by false data injection (FDI) attacks, the control objectives cannot be achieved. More seriously, the stability of the entire DER system is threatened. To address this issue, a distributed linear state observer (DLSO)-based distributed secondary control is presented in this digest. The DLSO detects the attack signals based on local and neighboring measurements. The estimated attack-signals in the DLSO are further compensated by the control variables of the distributed secondary control to eliminate the negative impact from the cyber-attacks. Both simulation and experimental results have validated the effectiveness of the proposed control for both bus voltage regulations and output current/power sharing.

Multiple nearby isolated microgrids (MGs) can be interconnected to become multi-MGs (MMGs) and meet larger bulk power demands, thus improving reliability/security of MMGs and reducing the power supply investment costs. However, a multi-layer control structure and complex communication network are inevitable, which increase communication delays and complicate the control structure. To solve this problem, this article introduces a distributed secondary control (DSC) based on cluster consensus of inhibitory coupling with a power limit scheme. Compared with an inter-cluster communication coupling structure, the communication channels of the proposed scheme are minimised to simplify network topology, decrease the communication delays and control dimensions. The proposed control strategy reaches multi-valued consensus states for accurate active/reactive power sharing in different MGs. Furthermore, active/reactive power overloading in a MG cluster is discussed under an inhibitory coupling configuration. Based on the power limit scheme, each distributed generator (DG) of the overloaded MG is controlled to generate power within the rated power range for high local autonomy. In addition, an adaptive virtual impedance control is introduced to decrease voltage deviations between DGs. The analytical results are verified by a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink.

This paper is concerned with active power sharing and frequency regulation in an islanded microgrid under event-triggered communication. A distributed secondary control scheme with a sampled-data-based event-triggered communication mechanism is proposed to achieve active power sharing and frequency regulation in a unified framework, where neighborhood sampled-data exchange occurs only when the predefined triggering condition is violated. Compared with traditional periodic communication mechanisms, the proposed event-triggered communication mechanism shows some prominent ability in reducing the number of communication among neighbors while guaranteeing the desired performance level of microgirds. By employing the Lyapunov-Kravovskii functional method, some sufficient conditions are derived to characterize the effects of control gains, system parameters, and sampling period on stability of microgrids. Finally, case studies on a modified IEEE 34-bus test system are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed distributed control scheme, showcasing its effectiveness, robustness against load changes, and plug-and-play ability.

The distributed secondary control is applied in an inverter-dominated microgrid (MG) for compensating the voltage and frequency deviations caused by the operation of the primary droop-based control. Despite the flexibility and reliability of the controllers, the low-inertia nature of voltage source inverters threatens the system stability against probable disturbance. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the stability of islanded MG by focusing on the hierarchical control structure. The effect of the distributed secondary control on the stability margin of the MG using bifurcation analysis when parameters change is investigated in this article. To this end, this article firstly derives a precise dynamic model of the MG with the secondary control level. Next, the eigenvalues of the system state matrix are analyzed to determine the dominant parameters affecting the stability. Then, the bifurcation theory is used to predict the parameter stability margin with/without secondary control. By changing the parameters, the Hopf and saddle-node bifurcations are detected in the system. Finally, the simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the distributed secondary control in preventing the occurrence of bifurcation.

This paper investigates the consensus problem of the frequency and voltage in islanded microgrid A distributed secondary control strategy is proposed which is based on the multi-agent cooperative control method combined with event-triggered mechanism and achieves the frequency and voltage restoration. During the control process, the controller is designed to work as necessary to mitigate the communication burden and the number of executions. In addition, the influence of communication delay on control algorithm is taken into account in this paper. Finally, several simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

In recent years, cyber-attacks on communication links became an interesting research topic in various fields. In general, the aim of these attacks is to disrupt the system operation by corrupting the exchanged information, sever communication links, etc. distributed control is an attractive alternative to centralized control, however, this control architecture is vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to exchange information between different units. In this paper, the impact of cyber-attacks on distributed control of DC microgrids is studied. Impact of three common attacks in microgrids i.e., controller hijacking, false data injection, and denial of service is evaluated. To do so, four secondary control methods proposed in the literature for achieving output voltage restoration and current sharing accuracy of DC microgrids are considered. In this work, the cyber-attacks impact on communication links are modeled. Using the models, vulnerability comparison of the secondary control methods against cyber-attacks is performed. A DC microgrid with three units is built in SIMULINK/MATLAB environment in order to make the comparison studies.

This paper focuses on the issue of false data injection attack (FDIA) of controllers in AC microgrid, and proposes a distributed adaptive secondary controller for AC microgrid to achieve the control objective of restoring the rated frequency and voltage when the controllers are subjected to FDIA. Firstly, this paper analyzes the impact of constant FDIA on AC microgrid. Then, a distributed adaptive secondary controller is designed based on the adaptive compensation mechanism to compensate for the attack and eliminate the adverse effects of FDIA on the system. Further, the stability analysis for the designed secondary controller using Lyapunov theory proves that the control system is global asymptotically stable. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed distributed adaptive secondary control method is demonstrated both in the islanded AC microgrid model built by MATLAB/Simulink and in the StarSim hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
