We propose a new system of microring sensing transducer using a PANDA ring resonator type, in which the sensing unit is consisted of an optical add/drop filter and two nanoring resonators, where one ring is placed as a transducer (sensing unit), the other ring is set as a reference ring. In operation, the external force is assumed to exert on the sensing ring resonator. The method of finite difference time domain (FDTD) via the computer programming called Optiwave is used to simulate the sensing behaviors. The obtained results have shown that the change in wavelength due to the change in sensing ring radii is seen, in which the wavelength shift of 1 nm resolution is achieved. The distributed sensing system is designed, which is available for network sensing applications. The behavior of light within a PANDA ring resonator is also analyzed and reviewed.

Urban search and rescue is a dangerous and difficult task. The amount of information required to mount a rescue is staggering. This coupled with the time constraints of a rescue operation, mean that decisions are sometimes made without all the facts. Gas leaks or structural weaknesses put everyone in danger and can be difficult to detect without being in the environment itself. Robots can penetrate these disaster zones much more easily than humans or dogs and can detect unseen hazards like gas or radiation or can relay images of structural supports. By using robots we can quickly increase the amount of information available to first responders and help them make informed decisions that see more lives saved. The research at Massey University aims to build a system that will provide, amongst other features, a distributed sensor network that can monitor environmental factors and report them to the rescue team. This paper outlines the concept of these sensors, or Daughters, and the results of the tests on the sensors implemented.

Optical Backscatter Reflectometry (OBR) is an advanced distributed sensing technique that makes use of optical fibers to detect and localize physical parameters, with spatial resolution below the millimeter. By tailoring the Rayleigh scattering properties of optical fibers, enhancing the backscattering contents, we can create 2 and 3-dimensional sensing networks that can extend OBR to multi-dimensional sensing, and even to biosensing. In this work, we provide a tutorial on distributed optical fiber sensors with enhanced backscattering, and on how to design sensing networks with these fibers;we also review the main applications and emerging topics.

A Sparse TDOA Estimation Method for LPI Source Localization Using distributed sensors

In this paper, we propose a novel sparse time difference of arrival (S-TDOA) estimation method for the localization of the low probability of intercept (LPI) signals using distributed sensors. The proposed method uses the phase linearity of the wideband spatial covariances between the sensors obtained using sparse data. In the conventional distributed sensor systems, whole the data between the sensors is required to be transmitted to a central processor with a high computational load. In this work, the TDOA estimation is performed by using sparse sensor data in order to reduce computational load and high data sharing rate, which is more desirable for the practical implementations. It is shown in various simulations that the proposed method can effectively estimate the TDOA between the distributed sensors using the sparse multi-sensor data even in low signal-to-noise ratio. It is also shown that the TDOA estimation performance of the proposed method follows to Cramer Rao lower bound. Moreover, it is also shown that the data sharing rate and computation time are quite reduced without a significant performance loss with the sparsity process.

Optical fibre sensors (OFS) are now seen as a rapidly developing technique with the potential to meet the increasing needs of the nuclear power plants of Electricite de France (EDF), as far as optimal maintenance is concerned. Their use in networks (OFSN) of various types (parallel, series, ring, . . .) allows effective monitoring and control of major components in the power station (nuclear reactor, generator, pumps, pipes, . . .). EDF is carrying out several applications through its own R&D efforts and cooperation with many scientific laboratories and industrial companies.

Unmanned aerial vehicle localization using distributed sensors

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles of varying types and sizes has increased drastically in recent years. Finding the exact geometric location of these unmanned aerial vehicles is important for several reasons. In this work, we investigate a new approach to localizing unmanned aerial vehicles using multiple image sensors, such as cameras connected through sensor networks, so that sensitive areas can be protected. In the proposed approach, image sensors deployed in the ground measure the azimuth angle and angle of elevation of the target vehicle and send that information to a collector node, so it can estimate the location of the target vehicle based on the collected samples. Two estimation methods are proposed to solve the localization problem. The first scheme localizes the projection of the target vehicle on the horizontal plane and estimates the altitude later. The second scheme estimates the location of the target vehicle directly in three-dimensional space. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated through simulation.

Coherence multiplexing of distributed sensors based on pairs of fiber Bragg gratings of low reflectivity

A coherence multiplexing scheme for distributed sensors based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pairs is introduced. Each pair of identical FBGs forms a Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer (FPI) and induces an additional optical path difference (OPD) that is proportional to the center-to-center interval between the two FBGs (one for sensing and the other for reference). The interference intensity reaches its maximum when the FPI-induced OPD is compensated by scanning one arm of a Michelson interferometer to a certain position. The variation of the measurand induces a mismatch between the central reflection wavelengths of two FBGs and consequently reduces interference intensity. To separate the interferometric signals for demultiplexing, the intervals between the two FBGs are preset to different values for different sensors. In order to improve the multiplexing ability of the system and reduce the crosstalk among the sensors, we use gratings of low reflectivity. Temperature sensing is demonstrated to show the high sensitivity (-1.92%/degrees C) and low crosstalk of our distributed sensing system.

Geoacoustic Inversion Using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle in Conjunction With distributed sensors

A midfrequency (2-6kHz) geoacoustic parameter inversion approach is proposed using a moving source and single receiver. The source motion creates a synthetic horizontal line array (SHLA), and the received signals, by source-receiver reciprocity, can be used to estimate the sedimentbottom parameters using matched field inversion (MFI). Using a wideband signal, the arrival times of multipaths are estimated using compressive sensing, from which one can estimate the source-receiver range, water depth, sediment thickness, and sound speed. This information is difficult to get at low frequencies due to the limited bandwidth. MFI is carried out using the frequency-coherent cost function and does not require the data to be precisely synchronized. Sensitivities of inversion of geoacoustic parameters are also studied. Performance using the SHLA is shown to be comparable to that using the conventional horizontal and vertical line array, and is shown to be sensitive to sediment attenuation-one of the difficult parameters to estimate. The proposed scheme uses short range (50-150 m) data, and requires a low-level source that can be carried by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). With the AUV traveling between nodes in a distributed sensors network, the inversion can be conducted over a large area.

Feasibility study for partial discharge detection and defective region identification in power transformers by using distributed sensors

Monitoring of partial discharge (PD) and its progress as the main cause of the insulation deterioration process in power transformers can encompass valuable information about the related insulation condition and reveals degradation mechanisms. In this study, some simple sensors, which are made from a few turns wrapped around the transformer core, are used to detect PD signals. Moreover, a feasibility study is done to identify defective phase/region based on the captured PD signals waveforms through these sensors. The idea is implemented on a 50 kVA, 20 kV/400 V three-phase transformer by injecting artificial and quasi-real PD signals to different sections of HV windings. Also, various transformer connections are considered in the experimental studies to find the effect of them on the waveforms of the captured signals (e.g. peak-to-peak value and signal energy). The obtained experimental results show that small PDs (as low as 10 pC) is detectable by the mentioned sensors and defective phase can be identified in all of transformer connection cases. Furthermore, considering failure to identify defective regions by broadband analysis, a limited-band approach is proposed through obtaining |H(s)| for the sensors. The results show that exact defective phase/region identification is feasible by selecting a frequency band compatible with IEC60270 recommendation.

This work deals with the issue of blind cooperative spectrum sensing using distributed sensors with large-scale fading. We first investigate the Friedman-test-based nonparametric detector and analyze its performance. Due to the operations of instantaneous power passing and ranking, the nonparametric detector has relatively high-sensing overhead and computational complexity. To overcome these drawbacks, we then propose a blind cooperative parametric detector for which only local average power passing is needed and instantaneous power ranking is avoided. Compared with the nonparametric detector, the parametric detector delivers better performance with much lower overhead and complexity. The detection probability and false alarm probability of the parametric detector are analyzed, and its decision threshold is derived. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the parametric detector, compared with the energy detector and the eigenvalue-based detectors in the literature.
