COORDINATED SENSING OF NETWORKED BODY sensors USING MARKOV DECISION PROCESSES

This article describes a Markov decision process (MDP) framework for coordinated sensing between correlated sensors in a body-area network. The technique is designed to extend the life of mobile continuous health-monitoring systems based on energy-constrained wearable sensors. The technique enables distributed sensors in a body-area network to adapt their sampling rates in response to changing criticality of the detected data and the limited energy reserve at each sensor node. The relationship between energy consumption, sampling rates, and utility of coordinated measurements is formulated as an MDP. This MDP is solved to generate a globally optimal policy that specifies the sampling rates for each sensor for all possible states of the system. This policy is computed offline before deployment and only the resulting policy is stored within each sensor node. We also present a method of executing the global policy without requiring continuous communication between the sensors. Each sensor node maintains a local estimate of the global state. Communication occurs only when an information-theoretic model of the uncertainty in the local state estimates exceeds a predefined threshold. We show results on simulated data that demonstrate the efficacy of this distributed-control framework and compare the performance of the proposed controller with other policies.

The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm represents an attractive opportunity for new generation measurement applications, which are increasingly based on efficient and reliable communication systems to allow the extensive availability of continuous data from instruments and/or sensors, thus enabling real-time measurement analysis. Nevertheless, different communication systems and heterogeneous sensors and acquisition systems may be found in an IIoT-enabled measurement application, so that solutions need to be defined to tackle the issue of seamless, effective, and low-latency interoperability. A significant and appropriate solution is the open platform communications (OPCs) unified architecture (UA) protocol, thanks to its object-oriented structure that allows a complete contextu-alization of the information. The intrinsic complexity of OPC UA, however, imposes meaningful performance assessment to evaluate its suitability in the aforementioned context. To this aim, this article presents the design of a general yet accurate and reproducible measurement setup that will be exploited to assess the performance of the main open-source implementations of OPC UA. The final goal of this work is to provide a characterization of the impact of this protocol stack in an IIoT-enabled measurement system, in particular, in terms of both the latency introduced in the measurement process and the power consumption.

distributed state estimation for a stochastic linear hybrid system over a sensor network

In this study, the authors consider the distributed state estimation problem of a stochastic linear hybrid system (SLHS) observed over a sensor network. The SLHS is a dynamical system with interacting continuous state dynamics described by stochastic linear difference equations and discrete state (or mode) transitions governed by a Markovian process with a constant transition matrix. Most existing hybrid estimation algorithms are based on a centralised architecture which is not suitable for distributed sensor network applications. Further, the existing distributed hybrid estimation algorithms are restrictive in sensor network topology, or approximate the consensus process among connected sensor agents. This study proposes a distributed hybrid state estimation algorithm based on the multiple model based approach augmented with the optimal consensus estimation algorithm which can locally process the state estimation and share the estimation information with the neighbourhood of each sensor agent. This shared information comprises local mode-conditioned state estimates and edge-error covariances, and is used to bring about an agreement or a consensus across the network. The proposed distributed hybrid state estimation algorithm is demonstrated with an illustrative aircraft tracking example.

Characterisation of Raman distributed temperature sensor using deconvolution algorithms

The behaviour of distributed temperature sensors based on spontaneous Raman scattering using deconvolution algorithm is studied for improvement of temperature and spatial resolution in Raman distributed temperature sensor (RDTS). The deconvolution algorithms such as Fourier deconvolution (FourD), Fourier regularised deconvolution and Fourier wavelet regularised deconvolution (FourWaRD) are investigated in this study. Numerical simulation shows that the temperature resolution is enhanced by six times using the proposed FourWaRD algorithm compared with conventional FourD algorithm. In this study, for a light source with 60 ns pulse width, a spatial resolution of 3 m is achieved using the FourWaRD algorithm. The proposed sensing system exhibits a temperature resolution of 0.45 K because of the reduction of noise. In addition, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of proposed RDTS is realised using Indium Gallium Arsenide avalanche photo detector over a 30 km sensing range. The authors have achieved about 4 dB improvement of SNR using FourWaRD algorithm compared with FourD algorithm at a distance of 25 km for an input power of 10 dBm. The numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed deconvolution algorithms are beneficial complements for RDTS to realise accurate detection and temperature monitoring of sharp temperature variations.

Light Diffusing Optical Fiber Sensor for distributed Optical Absorption Spectroscopy and Chemical Sensing

An optical fiber sensor system for distributed optical absorption spectroscopy based on light diffusing optical fiber is proposed and evaluated. The sensor is composed by two light-diffusing glass fibers radiatively coupled. The light from a pulsed laser diode (PLD) propagates along the first fiber and is locally diffused out into the medium between the fibers. The light transmitted by the medium is partially collected by the second fiber and detected at the end of the fiber by an optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) detection scheme. The system permits distributed measurements of the optical absorption properties of the sample medium between the fibers. The experimental results confirm the possibility of distributed measurements with a spatial resolution of about 17 cm over 4 m of measurement range. distributed chemical sensing has also been evaluated by measuring the absorption of water solutions containing copper ions. A limit of detection (LOD) of 710 ppm has been achieved.

Modulation Classification of Single-Input Multiple-Output Signals Using Asynchronous sensors

This paper discusses the automatic modulation classification of weak communication signals using distributed low-cost sensors. The concept of a secondary user in sensor networks is presented and very high-order statistics are used as modulation features. Two feature-based methods, single-variable and multivariable modulation classifiers, are proposed for estimating unknown modulation schemes through single-input multiple-output signal sensing channels. The new approaches acquire multiple signal observations collected from distributed sensors and leverage the channel diversity to enhance signal power and reduce bias in estimation. The experiment demonstrates that the network centric modulation classifier achieves significantly improved performance in terms of probability of correct classification than the current state-of-the-art single sensor modulation classifier, and the multivariable modulation classifier is more robust to the channel parameter variations than the single-variable classifier.

Four Point Probe Micro-Optical Gyroscope With Self Calibration Control

A new Micro-optical gyroscope system with self-calibration is proposed, in which a gyroscope network is developed using a four point probe sensor. This system is composed of a modified add/drop filter known as a PANDA ring resonator, which is connected as a star network. The changes in delay time of light in the three-dimensional rotation motions can be observed using each of sensing nodes. By using the central control, the self-calibration of each node can be performed and managed by the comparison of signals in the right-and left-hand side rings (Rr and Rl). The proposed system is mathematically analyzed and simulated. The obtained simulation results of the rotating signals around the y, x, and z axes are given by the delay times between the output1 and output2 with 2, 3, and 6 attosecond, respectively. The rotation orbit as a function of the initial rotation rate Omega based on the Sagnac effects is achieved. The experimental simulation results are also obtained by using the practical design method (Opti-wave) and discussed in details.

Multi-source DOA estimation based on multi-UAV collaboration in complex GNSS spoofing environments

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are widely used in both military and civilian sectors due to their maneuverability and versatility. However, UAVs rely on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for real-time accurate navigation and are therefore vulnerable to attacks, particularly spoofing attacks, in GNSS-challenging environments. Furthermore, UAV payloads are generally limited to carrying only a single antenna, significantly restricting the spatial Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) available. A new scheme is presented to address the challenges posed by multiple spoofing sources for UAV GNSS navigation. Unlike conventional multi-antenna techniques, our approach extends centralised multi-antenna Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation to distributed scenarios using UAV collaboration techniques. The multi-source DOA estimation of GNSS spoofing is achieved using the space-time DOA matrix (ST-DOAMatrix) technique, which enhances system resilience and spatial DoFs. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and demonstrate the feasibility and potential of the technique in ensuring the proper and safe operation of UAVs using GNSS navigation. A novel approach is introduced for enhancing the resilience of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) against GNSS spoofing attacks through a collaborative technique that utilises a space-time Direction of Arrival (DOA) matrix. The proposed method, designed for UAVs with single-antenna systems, extends centralised multi-antenna DOA estimation to distributed UAV networks, thereby improving spatial Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) and ensuring secure GNSS navigation. image

Exploiting the use of information to improve coverage performance of robotic sensor networks

A robotic sensor network is advantageous in performing a coverage task compared to the static sensor network because of its ability to self-deploy and self-reconfigure. However, since the sensor has a limited sensing range, when mobile sensors are initially deployed, sensors located far away from the region of interest may not be able to self-deploy themselves, that is, participate in the coverage task. This results in a degradation of coverage performance by the robotic network. This paper proposes a novel algorithm in order to improve the coverage performance by the whole mobile sensor network by guaranteeing the participation of all sensors in the coverage task. The algorithm is a combination of the standard gradient-based coverage algorithm and a leader-following algorithm and is designed to maximise the joint detection probabilities of the events in the region of interest. As a strategy, first a set of leader sensors are selected based on the information which each sensor has gathered. The rest of the sensors will follow their leaders until they have sufficient information on the region of interest and then switch to the standard coverage algorithm. The proposed algorithm can be performed in a distributed manner. The results are validated through several numerical simulations.

This study is concerned with distributed H filtering for continuous-time linear systems over sensor networks with heterogeneous Markovian coupling intercommunication delays. The set of sensor nodes forms a sensing and communication network whose topology is modelled by a directed graph that describes the measurement exchanged among neighbouring sensor nodes. Heterogeneous random coupling delays modelled by a Markov process are considered in the intercommunication between interacting sensor nodes. A refined two-step decoupling technique is presented to deal with the complicated coupling of exchanged measurement in the presence of the delays. A sufficient condition on the existence of desired distributed H filters is derived such that the resultant filtering error system is mean square exponentially stable with prescribed weighting average H performance. Two illustrative examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed results.
