Three dimensional imaging with randomly distributed sensors

As a promising three dimensional passive imaging modality, Integral Imaging (II) has been investigated widely within the research community. In virtually all of such investigations, there is an implicit assumption that the collection of elemental images lie on a simple geometric surface (e. g. flat, concave, etc), also known as pickup surface. In this paper, we present a generalized framework for 3D II with arbitrary pickup surface geometry and randomly distributed sensor configuration. In particular, we will study the case of Synthetic Aperture Integral Imaging (SAII) with random location of cameras in space, while all cameras have parallel optical axes but different distances from the 3D scene. We assume that the sensors are randomly distributed in 3D volume of pick up space. For 3D reconstruction, a finite number of sensors with known coordinates are randomly selected from within this volume. The mathematical framework for 3D scene reconstruction is developed based on an affine transform representation of imaging under geometrical optics regime. We demonstrate the feasibility of the methods proposed here by experimental results. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on 3D imaging using randomly distributed sensors. This work deals with the issue of blind cooperative spectrum sensing using distributed sensors with large-scale fading. We first investigate the Friedman-test-based nonparametric detector and analyze its performance. Due to the operations of instantaneous power passing and ranking, the nonparametric detector has relatively high-sensing overhead and computational complexity. To overcome these drawbacks, we then propose a blind cooperative parametric detector for which only local average power passing is needed and instantaneous power ranking is avoided. Compared with the nonparametric detector, the parametric detector delivers better performance with much lower overhead and complexity. The detection probability and false alarm probability of the parametric detector are analyzed, and its decision threshold is derived. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the parametric detector, compared with the energy detector and the eigenvalue-based detectors in the literature.

Real-time monitoring of railway traffic using slope-assisted Brillouin distributed sensors

The application of a Brillouin distributed sensor for the monitoring of railway traffic is presented in this work. The field test is performed on the Italian regional line San Severo-Peschici, operated by Ferrovie del Gargano. A single-mode optical fiber sensor was attached along a rail length of about 60 m. The strain associated with train passage was acquired along the monitored rail length at 31 Hz acquisition rate and 1 m spatial resolution. The data acquired by the sensor demonstrates its capability of retrieving useful information in railway traffic monitoring, such as train identification, axle counting, speed detection, and dynamic load calculation. A new data fusion model consisting of several levels of parallel decision fusions is considered. Global optimization of such a model is discussed to obtain the fusion rules for overall optimal performance. The reliability analysis of the proposed model is carried out to establish its superiority over the existing parallel and serial fusion models.

Brillouin scattering based distributed sensors for structural applications

Over the past Four years the Fibre Optics Group at the University of New Brunswick has been developing a distributed sensor for use in smart civil structures. By using Brillouin loss, the sensor is capable of measuring strain or temperature at any region on a sensing fibre, even those that an kilometers in length. This paper outlines the development of the sensor system, and discusses some of the experiments that have been performed with it. New results are presented that demonstrate 100 mm spatial resolution under laboratory conditions. This represents a four-fold improvement in the spatial resolution over previously reported results attained with a Brillouin scattering based distributed sensor.

Robust Fault Detection for Networked Systems with distributed sensors

This paper is concerned with the robust fault detection problem for a class of discrete-time networked systems with distributed sensors. Since the bandwidth of the communication channel is limited, packets from different sensors may be dropped with different missing rates during the transmission. Therefore, a diagonal matrix is introduced to describe the multiple packet dropout phenomenon and the parameter uncertainties are supposed to reside in a polytope. The aim is to design a robust fault detection filter such that, for all probabilistic packet dropouts, all unknown inputs and admissible uncertain parameters, the error between the residual (generated by the fault detection filter) and the fault signal is made as small as possible. Two parameter-dependent approaches are proposed to obtain less conservative results. The existence of the desired fault detection filter can be determined from the feasibility of a set of linear matrix inequalities that can be easily solved by the efficient convex optimization method. A simulation example on a networked three-tank system is provided to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed techniques.

Maximum Likelihood and IRLS Based Moving Source Localization With distributed sensors

In this article, we consider the problem of estimating the location and velocity of a moving source using a distributed passive radar sensor network. We first derive the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) using direct sensor observations, when the source signal is unknown and modeled as a deterministic process. Since the MLE obtains the source location and velocity estimates through a search process over the parameter space and is quite computationally intensive, we also developed an efficient algorithm to solve the problem using a two-step approach. The first step finds the time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) estimates for each sensor with respect to a reference sensor by using a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform and interpolation, while the second step employs an iterative reweighted least square (IRLS) approach with a varying weighting matrix to determine the source location and velocity. To benchmark the performance of the proposed methods, a constrained Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the considered source localization problem is derived. Numerical results show that the IRLS approach has a lower signal-to-noise ratio threshold phenomenon compared with several recent TDOA/FDOA-based methods, especially when the source is considerably farther away from some sensors than others, creating a larger disparity in the quality of sensors observations.

An optimal data fusion rule is derived for an m-ary detection problem. Each detector determines a local decision using a local decision rule and transmits the local decision to the fusion center. Considering the reliability of local detectors, local decisions are combined to produce the final decision In this study, based upon the maximum posterior probability concept, optimal decision rules for m-ary detection problems are proposed for the local detector and the data fusion center.

In [1] the authors consider the problem of target detection with multiple sensors and propose a decentralized decision network with multiple fusion levels with improved reliability to link failures. They also derive the detection performance of the system, called multiple level parallel decision fusion (MLPDF), and carry out a comparison of their system with the conventional parallel distributed model. In this letter we show that, even if it is less sensitive to link failures, it is not true that the MLPDF system has better detection performance than the conventional parallel fusion system, as is declared in [1]. In fact we show that the performance results derived in [1] are based on a wrong assumption and lead to an absurdity.

Proposal of the nano-sensing device and system using a nano-waveguide transducer for distributed sensors

We propose a new concept of a distributed sensing system using a nano-waveguide and an array waveguide. The small change in physical quantity affects the change in device parameters such as refractive index or length, which is relatively absorbed and observed by the resonant wavelength. In principle, the dense wavelength separation is generated by using a soliton pulse propagating within a ring resonator system, whereas a resonant signal can be stored within the nano-waveguide, i.e. a transducer, which is formed by the sensing device. Induced change in the resonant signal at each wavelength occurs, and can be detected by using the optical spectrum analyzer. Such a proposed device is suitable to perform the measurements in the nano-scale regime such as force, stress and temperature. Moreover, the distributed or multiplexed sensing applications are also available using the nano-waveguide sensing device incorporating the array waveguide, which is discussed in details.
