Application of fault detection using distributed sensors in smart cities

This paper proposes a multi-sensor fault detection algorithm based on intelligent sensing systems. The algorithm establishes equations considering physical constraints and then uses the constraints between adjacent nodes to calculate the Kalman filter estimation value with state constraints, for fault diagnosis and data checking. The sensor structure propose herein is distributed, and the algorithm assumes the form of sensor network nodes, each node having its own processing system, without any central nodes or central communication facilities. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is fully distributed, enabling independent calculations between multiple measurement nodes. This paper discusses the algorithm derivation process in detail, as well as the verification of the parallelism, accuracy, and stability of the algorithm through software simulation and hardware testing. Passive Acoustic Source Tracking Using Underwater distributed sensors

Passive acoustic source tracking using underwater distributed sensors has been a severe problem because of the complexity of the underwater channel and the limited resources of the sensors. In this paper, we propose an acoustic source tracking algorithm using underwater distributed sensors. According to the waveguide invariant theory, a slope of the interference pattern which is seen in a spectrogram is proportional to range of the acoustic source. The proposed algorithm matches the interference patterns at the distributed sensors and calculates a distance ratio between source and sensors. A locus of the source by the principal of the circle of Apollonius is estimated. The Apollonius circle, however, still keeps the ambiguity against the correct source location. In addition hyperbola equation is introduced into localization algorithm by estimating time difference of arrival between the received signals at the distributed sensors. Finally the cross point of the circle and hyperbola can be estimated as the position of the acoustic source. The proposed algorithm is tested on sea trial data for acoustic source ranges of 400-2,000 m and frequencies from 50 to 750 Hz. The results show that the proposed algorithm successfully estimates the source location within an error bound of 7.3%.

Enclosed public spaces are hotspots for airborne disease transmission. To measure and maintain indoor air quality in terms of airborne transmission, an open source, low cost and distributed array of particulate matter sensors was developed and named Dynamic Aerosol Transport for Indoor Ventilation, or DATIV, system. This system can use multiple particulate matter sensors (PMSs) simultaneously and can be remotely controlled using a Raspberry Pi-based operating system. The data acquisition system can be easily operated using the GUI within any common browser installed on a remote device such as a PC or smartphone with a corresponding IP address. The software architecture and validation measurements are presented together with possible future developments.

Applications of Brillouin Dynamic Grating to distributed Fiber sensors

In the process of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), acoustic waves are generated by the interference of counter-propagating optical waves via electrostriction effect. These acoustic waves not only stimulate the Brillouin scattering process, but can also play a role of moving Bragg reflector for another optical wave when a proper phase-matching condition is satisfied between the interacting optical waves. Brillouin dynamic grating (BDG) represents this secondary role of the acoustic wave, which shows a unique reflection spectrum, called BDG spectrum. The BDG spectrum generally shows higher sensitivity to the change of physical variables, such as temperature and strain than ordinary Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS), and also provides information on the waveguide parameters, such as polarization or modal birefringence with high accuracy. This paper reviews the operation principle of BDG under various conditions and the research progresses on its application to distributed fiber sensors.

As global healthcare systems transition into the digital era, remote patient health monitoring will be widespread through the use of inexpensive monitoring devices, such as ECG patches, glucose monitors, etc. Once a sensor-concentrator-cloudlet-cloud infrastructure is in place, it is not unrealistic to imagine a scenario where a physician monitors 20-30 patients remotely. Such an infrastructure will revolutionize clinical diagnostics and preventative medicine by allowing the doctors to access long-term and real-time information, which cannot be obtained from short-term in-hospital ECG recordings. While the large amount of sensor data available to a physician is incredibly valuable clinically, it is overwhelming in raw form. In this paper, the data handling aspect of such a long term health monitoring system is studied. Novel ways to record, aggregate, and visualize this flood of sensory data in an intuitive manner are introduced which allow a doctor to review days worth of data in a matter of seconds. This system is one of the first attempts to provide a tool that allows the visualization of long-term monitoring data acquired from multiple sensors.

We present novel lower bounds on the mean-square source-localization error via a network where the sensors are deployed randomly (e.g., scattered from the air). The sensor locations are modeled as a homogenous Poisson point process. We present CRB-type bounds on the expectation of the localization square error, which is not a function of a particular sensor configuration, but rather of the sensor statistics. Thus, it can be evaluated prior to the sensor deployment and provide insights into design issues such as the necessary sensor density. The derived bounds are simple for evaluation, while providing a good prediction of the actual network performance.

Modal and physical deflections of beams using distributed wire sensors

distributed wire sensors are utilized to extract modal and physical deflections of composite beams. The sensors rely in their operation on a set of wires which are embedded off the neutral axes of the composite beams. The wires are arranged in a special manner which allows continuous monitoring of the deflection curve of the beam. The output signals of the wires are processed to determine the modal, linear and angular displacements at critical discrete points along the beam axis. The theoretical and experimental performance of the sensor is presented in both the time and frequency domains. Comparisons are given between the experimental performance of the distributed sensor and that of conventional laser sensors in order to demonstrate the accuracy and merits of the distributed sensor. The results obtained suggest the potential of this new class of sensors as a viable means for monitoring the static and dynamic deflections of flexible composite smart beams and plates.

Presented is a novel approach for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of optical fibre distributed temperature sensors. The proposed method is based on cyclic codes and it can be implemented by high-power lasers, which are required for long-range applications but are unsuitable for conventional coding techniques. The expected performance improvement, in terms of temperature resolution, sensing range and measurement time, is confirmed by simulations.

Industrial robots are today separated from human workers by means of safety barriers, that protect humans from the risk of collisions. This separation has a clear negative influence on diffusion of robotic technology in shopfloors. On the other hand the removal of protective barriers gives rise to safety issues, that can be addressed with a combination of approaches, including sensor based reactive control. In this paper a distributed proximity sensor, to be mounted on the links of the manipulator, is presented. The optimal placement of the spots of such sensor is discussed, taking into account detection capabilities and safety enhancement. Experiments developed on an ABB IRB 140 robot using off-the-shelf infrared distance sensors as spots are presented.
