Recently, Eschenauer and Gligor [6] proposed a model for random key predistribution in distributed sensor networks. In this paper we study the security of this model against a semi-honest adversary who compromises nodes, and present a key establishment algorithm that is provably secure. This is the first and only protocol that can guarantee security against semi-honest adversaries in an analytical framework.

Recent advances in machine learning enable wider applications of prediction models in cyber-physical systems. Smart grids are increasingly using distributed sensor settings for distributed sensor fusion and information processing. Load forecasting systems use these sensors to predict future loads to incorporate into dynamic pricing of power and grid maintenance. However, these inference predictors are highly complex and thus vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Moreover, the adversarial attacks are synthetic norm-bounded modifications to a limited number of sensors that can greatly affect the accuracy of the overall predictor. It can be much cheaper and effective to incorporate elements of security and resilience at the earliest stages of design. In this paper, we demonstrate how to analyze the security and resilience of learning-based prediction models in power distribution networks by utilizing a domain-specific deep-learning and testing framework. This framework is developed using DeepForge and enables rapid design and analysis of attack scenarios against distributed smart meters in a power distribution network. It runs the attack simulations in the cloud backend. In addition to the predictor model, we have integrated an anomaly detector to detect adversarial attacks targeting the predictor. We formulate the stealthy adversarial attacks as an optimization problem to maximize prediction loss while minimizing the required perturbations. Under the worst-case setting, where the attacker has full knowledge of both the predictor and the detector, an iterative attack method has been developed to solve for the adversarial perturbation. We demonstrate the framework capabilities using a GridLAB-D based power distribution network model and show how stealthy adversarial attacks can affect smart grid prediction systems even with a partial control of network.

Event-triggered and self-triggered control have recently been proposed as implementation strategies that considerably reduce the resources required for control. Although most of the work so far has focused on closing a single control loop, some researchers have started to investigate how these new implementation strategies can be applied when closing multiple-feedback loops in the presence of physically distributed sensors and actuators. In this paper, we consider a scenario where the distributed sensors, actuators, and controllers communicate via a shared wired channel. We use our recent prescriptive framework for the event-triggered control of nonlinear systems to develop novel policies suitable for the considered distributed scenario. Afterwards, we explain how self-triggering rules can be deduced from the developed event-triggered strategies.

Underwater sensor network has broad application prospects for performing underwater warning, target detection, and marine environment monitoring. However, traditional cubefilled full-coverage node deployment schemes are costly and infeasible to detect target objects due to the considerably redundant nodes. In this paper, we propose a new scheme with a low cost to detect the target in dynamic waters to reduce the cost of the deployment. Our scheme controls the distributed sensors to move and construct an angular sensor barrier through which the target may pass. The profile-based barrier deployment scheme only needs to adjust node depth to reduce movement costs. During depth adjustment, the proposed method takes the node density, the residual energy of the node and the node movement effect into account so that the randomly distributed nodes are sunk at different depths, and the redundant nodes are removed by the 2-Voronoi diagram lemma. We use the simulation experiment to evaluate the coverage and energy consumption during the movement of the nodes. The analysis of the experimental results shows that the method has good coverage performance. Also, it can reduce and balance energy consumption during the anchor node deployment to extend network uptime.

As a key technology of home area networks in smart grids, fine-grained power usage monitoring may help conserve electricity. Several existing systems achieve this goal by exploiting appliances' power usage signatures identified in labor-intensive in situ training processes. Recent work shows that autonomous power usage monitoring can be achieved by supplementing a smart meter with distributed sensors that detect the working states of appliances. However, sensors must be carefully installed for each appliance, resulting in high installation cost. This paper presents Supero - the first ad hoc sensor system that can monitor appliance power usage without supervised training. By exploiting multi-sensor fusion and unsupervised machine learning algorithms, Supero can classify the appliance events of interest and autonomously associate measured power usage with the respective appliances. Our extensive evaluation in five real homes shows that Supero can estimate the energy consumption with errors less than 7.5%. Moreover, non-professional users can quickly deploy Supero with considerable flexibility.

Smart surfaces for micro-conveyance are planar motion devices that transport objects between specific positions. The solutions in this research topic have mainly used analog/continuous actuators with distributed sensors and feedback control schemes to accomplish high precision. Examples of these analog actuators are pneumatic (non-contact) and electrostatic (contact) conveyance systems, but their drawbacks are: complex modeling, control and air feeding logistics for the pneumatic solutions; and pull-in failures and high voltages for the electrostatic solutions. As an alternative, digital electromagnetic actuators offer sensor-less operation, simple control schemes and high precision but require precisely fabricated designs. In this article, we analyze the long-range capability of a digital electromagnetic actuator array prototype. We present the array's operation principle and electromagnetic model, from which we derive the positives of expanding its active area. We perform experimental tests to demonstrate the long-range capability of the prototype and, based on the model and experimental results, we present and fabricate a modular and scalable design of the array for large active area applications.

In order to reduce total energy communicated by distributed sensors, we address the problem where the recipient wants to perform supervised learning and classification on the data received from the sensors. Restricting our attention to a noiseless communication setting under simplistic Gaussian source assumptions, we provide algorithms for performing this supervised learning under energy limitations. The key idea we bring in is to approximate the problem of minimizing classification error-probability by minimizing the distortion in recovering the decision variable. Constraings on energy consumption in sensors is brought in by using simplistic circuit models inspired from the Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADCs) models. We provide an algorithm for learning the distribution-parameters of sensor-data under these energy constraints to arrive at high-reliability energy-allocation strategies, while enabling the energy-allocation algorithm to backtrack when the underlying distributions change, or when there is noise in sensed data that can push the algorithm towards a local minimum. Finally, we present numerical results on simulated data demonstrating the promise of the proposed techniques in reducing energy consumption.

This paper investigates semistability of discrete-time, switched linear systems under both deterministic and random switching policies. The notion of semistability pertains to a continuum of initial state dependent equilibria and has found wide applications such as consensus problems in multi-agent systems. The main contributions of the paper are three folds. First, we show that exponential semistability on a common equilibrium space is equivalent to output exponential stability of the switched linear system with a suitably defined output, under both arbitrary and random switchings. Further, their convergence rates are shown to be identical. Second, it is shown that output stability and its convergence rates can be efficiently characterized via the recently developed generating function approach. Third, we consider algorithm development and analysis of resource allocation schemes for topologically changing, distributed sensor networks. We formulate an iteration process of such an algorithm as a switched linear system, and characterize its convergence using the obtained semistability results.

The realization of the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vision, entailing the deployment of high-density autonomous flights over urban areas, necessitates methodologies transcending contemporary airborne sensing techniques. An instrumental innovation in this realm is the advent of distributed sensing. In this paradigm, environmental sensors function as active agents, engaging in the triad of sensing, processing, and communication either amongst themselves, with ground stations, or both. This concerted effort creates a dynamic and responsive "smart space," facilitating real-time autonomous control. NASA Ames Research Center is actively engaged in a series of comprehensive indoor and outdoor flight tests to garner requisite data and insights essential for the actualization of this ambitious vision. This paper delineates the holistic configuration of the flight payload and the distributed ground nodes pivotal to the NASA flight test campaign. Furthermore, it expounds upon the intricacies of the sensor node communication framework. The narrative extends to provide a detailed overview of the strategic placement of distributed sensors and a comprehensive account of the varied indoor and outdoor flight tests orchestrated in pursuit of UAM objectives.

Fiber-optic acoustic sensors have been increasingly applied in the condition monitoring of power equipment for their high sensitivity and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. The Sagnac fiber sensor system exhibits excellent sensitivity for the interferometric characteristics in the single-loop fiber route, while the phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) sensor system has great potential in long-distance distributed detection. In this paper, the performance of the two sensor systems was discussed on the partial discharge acoustic detection in power cable joints and compared with the conventional piezoelectric sensor. The acoustic signal characteristics of the two fiber-optic systems and the piezoelectric sensor were compared in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and frequency spectrum. The results showed that all three acoustic sensors could successfully detect the partial discharges caused by the defect within the cable joint, in terms of SNR, among which the Sagnac sensor system was the optimal as expected, and the piezoelectric sensor was superior to the Φ-OTDR sensor system. Nevertheless, the Φ-OTDR system realized the fault location of the partial discharge induced by the cable joint defect which is of great significance for the distributed detection.
