The development of a non-destructive health-monitoring system for painted metal structures is being pursued. The system is based on sensing the fluorescence emission intensity of quantum dot particles that have been distributed throughout protective aerospace coatings. The quantum dots serve as distributed sensors that can provide localized information on the corrosive conditions that exist within the paint film. Consequently this provides an early indication of several key aspects, which include: the quality of film application;the in-service loss of corrosion inhibitor;and the mechanisms of failure. In this paper we present the successful distribution of CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles into a commercial chromate-inhibited aerospace primer and demonstrate a correlation between available levels of hexavalent chromium corrosion inhibitor and quantum dot photoluminescence during accelerated corrosion testing. The development of a non-destructive inspection device utilizing a microchannel gated intensifying camera is in progress. Finally, we discuss the limitations of available quantum dot materials and provide a vision for non-destructive corrosion inspection in metal structures.

The distributed array of sensors is an interesting concept in the context of underwater environment monitoring. The signal processing distributed at sensors level has to have a low consumption (much less than the data transmission) and, in the same time, the processing efficiency needs to be satisfactory compared with a processing without any algorithmic complexity constraint. In this paper, we define a network of sensors which individually detect signals of interest based on the concept local time-frequency coherence analysis. This concept consists of estimating, in each analysis window, the local linear frequency modulation that matches the best the analyzed signal. This concept is much less sensitive to the time-varying energy of the signals, providing better detection performances than an energy-based detector. In addition, the sensors are organized in local sub-networks that will provide a joint detection stage. This operation consists in comparing the local time-frequency information obtained by the sensors of the sub-network and if they are the same, at the sub-network level, we decide that the detected signal is a useful one and its parameters has to be sent to the central processing level. This cooperating capability improves the performances as it is proved by the results on real data and quantified in terms of receiving operating characteristics.

Online condition monitoring of submarine power cables helps to avert failures and damages produced by mechanical impacts. We report, to our knowledge for the first time, on investigations regarding the feasibility of distributed fiber optic acoustic sensors based on C-OTDR, with the sensor fibres being embedded in the cable, to detect vibrations due to mechanical disturbances along the cable. We present first results of sensing experiments where acoustic signals are transmitted through water to simulate the corresponding submarine conditions. Furthermore, we show results evaluating the usefulness of fibre commonly embedded in existing power cable designs for our sensing purposes.

This paper presents a probabilistic algorithm to collaborate distributed sensors for mobile robot localization. During robot localization given a known environment model, Monte Carlo method is extended to integrate the detection information coming from environmental sensors to localize robot as long as the sensors do detect the robot. Meanwhile, we present an implementation that uses color environmental cameras for robot detection. All the parameters of each environmental camera are unknown in advance and can be calibrated by robot. Once cameras' calibrated, their detection models can be trained using sensor data according to their parameters. As a result, the robot's belief can reduce its uncertainty in response to the detection effectively. A further experiment, obtained with the real robot in an indoor office environment, illustrates that drastic improvement in localization speed and accuracy when compared to conventional robot localization.

The proliferation of strategic subsurface targets has increased the need for remote sensing techniques providing for the accurate detection and identification of deeply buried objects. A new RF Tomographic Technique is proposed in this concept paper for developing RF CAT Scans of buried objects using spectral, spatial/angular, and polarization diversity. This tomographic imaging technique, developed by Wicks and presented in GPR 2004 [1], uses embedded subsurface radiators, delivered by earth-penetrating non-explosive, electronic "e-bombs", as the source of strong underground radiated transmissions. distributed surface-contact sensors are used to collect the tomographic data for relay to a UAV and transmission to a remote site. Three-dimensional imaging algorithms have been developed to detect, image, and characterize deeply buried targets. By embedding the transmitters underground, reduced mutual coupling and EM emissions, and improved signal-to-noise ratios can be achieved. Simple surface SAR experiments over deep mine shafts have been performed to validate the 3D processing algorithms using 2D surface SAR sensor data. WIPL-D models have also been used to simulate the embedded and distributed sensors and to verify the significant enhancement in the received signal-to-noise ratio obtained by burying radiators under the surface.

On the design of an optimal coherent multistatic radar network configuration

The purpose of operating a radar system multistatically is to acquire information about targets of interest more quickly and reliably than would be possible using disparate radars, which fuse data and track post-detection. This paper identifies and addresses the critical issues for designing a coherent multistatic radar system using conventional coherent radars and proposes a set of design principles for configuring a coherent multistatic radar network with the aim of maximising the utility of information while constraining system cost and complexity. The issues discussed are as follows: the localisation of targets in three dimensions;eliminating the inevitable spatial ambiguities arising from sparse spatial sampling while exploiting the large aperture for high resolution;the achievement of spatial coherent processing gain for target detection;the effect of phase centre localisation, phase and frequency errors on synchronisation;the incorporation of three-dimensional Doppler estimation for slow-time coherent integration. The arguments presented are physically-based and complemented by mathematical analysis and numerical experimentation using non-linear sparse estimation, the sparse algorithm being critically important for resolving spatial ambiguities. An optimal configuration is identified, which has sufficiently many nodes to overcome spatial ambiguities and achieves significant spatial coherent processing gain, while simultaneously constraining the overheads of inter-node synchronisation and communication.

This paper addresses the problem of optimal sensor selection for ensuring diagnosability of discrete event systems. Given a nondiagnosable discrete event system modeled with labeled Petri nets, a new labeling function can be designed to enforce the system to be diagnosable. An ad-hoc parallel composition of non-deterministic finite automata (derived from the original labeled Petri net model) that are observed at multiple observation sites is employed. In order to optimize a given labeling function as well as a sensor selection, an integer linear programming problem is formulated to associate numerical sensor costs with transition relabelings. In a multi-fault system, this method can determine the type of faults that occur and the fault sequences pertaining to this fault type if multiple faults occur. Examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed method.

Fiber optic sensors for sub-centimeter spatially resolved measurements: Review and biomedical applications

One of the current frontier of optical fiber sensors, and a unique asset of this sensing technology is the possibility to use a whole optical fiber, or optical fiber device, as a sensor. This solution allows shifting the whole sensing paradigm, from the measurement of a single physical parameter (such as temperature, strain, vibrations, pressure) to the measurement of a spatial distribution, or profiling, of a physical parameter along the fiber length. In the recent years, several technologies are achieving this task with unprecedentedly narrow spatial resolution, ranging from the sub-millimeter to the centimeter-level. In this work, we review the main fiber optic sensing technologies that achieve a narrow spatial resolution: Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) dense arrays, chirped FBG (CFBG) sensors, optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) based on either Rayleigh scattering or reflective elements, and microwave photonics (MWP). In the second part of the work, we present the impact of spatially dense fiber optic sensors in biomedical applications, where they find the main impact, presenting the key results obtained in thermo-therapies monitoring, high-resolution diagnostic, catheters monitoring, smart textiles, and other emerging applicative fields.

A novel multi-target modular probe for multiple Large-Volume Metrology systems

Recent studies show that the combined use of Large-Volume Metrology (LVM) systems (e.g., laser trackers, rotary-laser automatic theodolites (R-LATs), photogrammetric cameras, etc.) can lead to a systematic reduction in measurement uncertainty and a better exploitation of the available equipment. Unfortunately, the sensors of a specific LVM system are usually able to localize only specific targets (i.e., active/passive elements positioned in the measurement volume) and not necessarily those related to other systems (e.g., the reflective markers for photogrammetric cameras cannot be used for R-LATs or laser trackers);this represents an obstacle when using combinations of different LVM systems. This paper describes the design of a new modular probe, with different typologies of targets and integrated sensors, which allows to simplify the measurement process. The probe is versatile as the number of targets, their typology and spatial position can be customized depending on the combination of LVM systems in use. A detailed analysis of the technical and functional characteristics of the probe is followed by the presentation of a mathematical/statistical model for the real-time probe localization. Description is supported by realistic application examples.

Inextensible Surface Reconstruction Under Small Relative Deformations from distributed Angle Measurements

A mathematical model to measure the shape of a 3D surface using angle measurements from embedded sensors is presented. The surface is known in a reference configuration and is assumed to have deformed inextensibly to its current shape. An inextensibility condition is enforced through a discretization of the metric tensor generating a finite number of constraints. This model allows to parameterize the shape of the surface using a small number of unknowns which leads to a small number of sensors. We study the singularities of the equations and derive necessary conditions for the problem to be well-posed as well as limitations of the algorithm. Simulations and experiments are performed on developable surfaces under relatively small deformations to analyze the performance of the method and to show the influence of the parameters used in our algorithm. Overall, the proposed method outperforms the current state-of-the-art by almost an order of magnitude.
