This paper addresses a real-life task and personnel scheduling problem arising in a large Italian company that needs to provide cleaning services inside a hospital. In this case study, the challenge is to determine a schedule of the employees to clean the whole hospital aiming to minimize the total labor cost, taking into account the fact that the building is a complex structure with multiple levels and each room has different peculiarity. To solve the problem, we propose a three-step approach using mathematical models and metaheuristic algorithms. The solution obtained indicates that the schedule attained by our method is better than the one generated by the company. In addition, to test and validate our approach more thoroughly, a set of artificial instances have been created. The results indicate that our method can help organizations to quickly generate and test a large variety of solutions. Our findings can be of general interest for other personnel scheduling problems involving distributed services.

Anomaly diagnosis for distributed service plays an important role in communication network information system. Log analysis is the main method to undertake anomaly detection. In order to reduce the manual detection, we propose an anomaly detection method based on the time-weighted control flaw graph model. The border is split by a discrete degree strategy based on analyzing the time interval distribution and the time weight is selected to be k-means. Experiments show that our algorithm has good precision and recall in anomaly diagnosis. In real-world scenarios, it has a precision of 80% and a recall rate of 65% on average.

REMR: A Reliability Evaluation Method for Dynamic Edge Computing Network Under Time Constraint

Computation and/or communication-intensive collaborative services accompanied by several distributed tasks/components, such as the services in Internet of Things, can be anywhere nowadays. These services are usually used by users at the Internet edge, making cloud computing struggles with the high end-to-end latency. Thanks to edge computing which pushes resources to the edge, the goals with lower latency can be well satisfied. However, in actual scenarios especially under dynamic edge computing networks, changes exist in resources, including computing, bandwidth, and nodes. Meanwhile, data packets (or flow) among collaborative tasks/components of a service can also not be conserved. These characteristics lead the service reliability hard to be guaranteed and make existing reliability evaluation methods no longer accurate. To study the effect of distributed and collaborative service deployment strategies under such background, we propose a reliability evaluation method (REMR). We first look for the solution set which can meet the time constraints. Then, we calculate the reliability of service supported by the solution set based on the principle of inclusion-exclusion with distributions of available transmission bandwidth and computing resources. Finally, we provide an illustrative example with several real-world data sets to make REMR easy to follow. To make REMR more reliable, we also propose and implement a Monte Carlo simulation method. Experiments prove that the reliability calculated by REMR is nearly the same as the simulation results and both the latencies and the jitters are also at a lower level.

The development of online drug mall system is getting faster and faster. However, when the online drug mall system expands various subsystems with different functions to meet various drug sales rules, the information interaction between each subsystem and the management of different systems have become a problem to be solved urgently. In view of this phenomenon, the traditional online drug mall system needs a unified integrated platform with simple structure and convenient management. We propose and develop an online drug mall system based on the SOA architecture. The SOA architecture can effectively improve concurrency, scalability, flexibility and low maintenance cost of the online drug mall system. The system fully implements the required functions, and has certain stability and reliability, and can provide users with a good user experience.

The management of authorizations for access to rooms, buildings and similar is of great importance for many facilities and institutions. However, similar with increasing size and variability, the complexity and the effort required for updating also increases significantly. The presented decentralized solution with locks featuring no permanent connection represents a significant improvement and simplification in this regard. In addition, its distributed blockchain architecture significantly reduces the possibilities for manipulation.

Application deployment as one of the software development stages has become more complex in the presence of distributed architectures that involve a variety of tools, and, with them, configuration differences, versioning and communication protocols. Even when cloud services have contributed a solution in this sense, it is still difficult to deploy distributed applications in on-premise environments. The container concept as packages that include the application code, its dependencies, libraries and services required for its correct execution, turns out to be an alternative for streamlining application deployment and it allows taking the virtualization concept to the operative system. However, it adds a software layer that requires monitoring and management. There are robust solutions for administering and monitoring containers but they also require computing resources that sometimes exceed the capacity of the average computer used for development, and they make local deployment difficult. In this work, the design of Crane, a tool for local deployment of containerized applications is presented. This tool has the characteristic of being lightweight, of general purpose and with automatic scaling capacities, which differentiates it from the Minikube tool, which allows some local Kubernetes API testing and is used mainly for the development of new features for the latter.

The recent developments of information technologies, and the consequent need for access to distributed services and resources, require robust and reliable authentication systems. Biometric systems can guarantee high levels of security and multimodal techniques, which combine two or more biometric traits, warranting constraints that are more stringent during the access phases. This work proposes a novel multimodal biometric system based on iris and retina combination in the spatial domain. The proposed solution follows the alignment and recognition approach commonly adopted in computational linguistics and bioinformatics;in particular, features are extracted separately for iris and retina, and the fusion is obtained relying upon the comparison score via the Levenshtein distance. We evaluated our approach by testing several combinations of publicly available biometric databases, namely one for retina images and three for iris images. To provide comprehensive results, detection error trade-off-based metrics, as well as statistical analyses for assessing the authentication performance, were considered. The best achieved False Acceptation Rate and False Rejection Rate indices were and 3.33%, respectively, for the multimodal retina-iris biometric approach that overall outperformed the unimodal systems. These results draw the potential of the proposed approach as a multimodal authentication framework using multiple static biometric traits.

With rising temperatures and increasing densification in modern cities the risk for so called urban heat islands increases. Urban heat islands pose health risks for elderly people, children, and persons with existing health conditions. Currently, cities rely on satellite images to detect areas of risk since existing sensor networks are not dense enough. However, these measures have either a low spatial or temporal resolution and are not suitable to continuously collect fine-granular data samples. We propose an alternative approach based on a distributed citizen-owned sensor network consisting of existing Smart Home and Internet of Things devices owned by citizens. We further deploy mobile sensors that can be attached to publicly available infrastructure such as buses, rental bikes, or e-scooters. These mobile measurement help to gain temporary insights into areas which have previously not been covered. However, the collected measurements in these areas remains sparse. Therefore, we continuously interpolate the current temperature by utilizing machine learning algorithms. With the existing measurements from mobile sensor stations we train a regression model to learn their dependencies with neighboring stationary weather stations. The predicted weather conditions of unmonitored results in a fine-granular heatmap that allows for an accurate localization of urban heat islands.

distributed computing paradigms such as cloud, mobile, Internet of Things, and Fog have enabled new modalities for building enterprise architectures through service composition. The fundamental premise is that the application can benefit from functionally equivalent services that can be traded in the cloud or services repositories. These services can vary in their Quality of services (QoS) and cost provision. Accordingly, the problem of service composition is the process of choosing a configuration of candidate services from a pool of available ones, considering QoS attribute, cost, and users' preference. Due to the inherent dynamism in service computing environments and communication networks, the advertised QoS values might fluctuate;therefore, service composition under uncertainty is inevitable and challenges satisfying services Level Agreement (SLA). In this paper, we present a systematic literature review to investigate and classify the existing studies in service composition under uncertainty. We identified 100 relevant studies published between the year 2007 and 2020. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to explicate a focused systematic review, classification, taxonomy of approaches, and trends along with their assumptions and applications;and to discuss future research directions in service composition under uncertainty. The heterogeneity and mobility inherent in a large-scale wireless sensor network makes it difficult to develop different applications. The difficulty primarily arises from weak and intermittent connections, dynamic reconfiguration, and limited power availability. The challenge in building a distributed service adaptive to environmental changes lies in the degree of data transmission and the adaptation to the dynamics can be automated or transparent to applications. Most applications in wireless sensor networks involve a group of nodes coordinating to perform one task. distributed composition service enables data centric nodes to form a dynamic task group and maintain the group. In this paper, we demonstrate the composition service and its implementation and show that the re-organization process can be automated in collaboration with the composition service by an adaptation server. Our testing validates the framework of the composition service and the performance improvement.
