With the expansion of the Web, the desire toward global cooperation in the distributed simulation technology has also been on the rise. However, since current distributed simulation interoperability methods are coupled with system implementations, they place constraints on enhancing interoperability and synchronization algorithms. To enhance simulation interoperability on the Web, we implemented the RISE (RESTful Interoperability simulation Environment) middleware, the first existing simulation middleware to be based on RESTful Web-services (WS). RISE is a general middleware that serves as a container to hold different simulation environments without being specific to a certain environment. RISE can hold heterogeneous simulations, and it exposes them as services via the Web. One of such services is called distributed CD++ (DCD++) simulation system, an extension of the CD++ core engine that allows executing DEVS and Cell-DEVS models. Here, we introduce a proof-of-concept design and implementation of DCD++ using the distributed simulation using the RISE environment. We show how the RESTful WS interoperability style in RISE has improved the design, implementation and the performance of the DCD++ simulator. We also discuss a substantial performance improvement of the implementation of the RISE-based DCD++ presented here, showing many advantages of the RESTful WS presented here: improved interoperability, a seamless method to be connected into a cloud computing environment, and performance improvement when compared to our SOAP-based DCD++ in a similar testing environment. Discrete event system specification (DEVS) is a modeling and simulation formalism that has been widely used to Study the dynamics of discrete event systems. Cell-DEVS is a DEVS-based formalism that defines spatial models as a cell space assembled of a group of DEVS models connected together. CD++ is a modeling and simulation toolkit capable of executing DEVS and Cell-DEVS models that has proven to be useful for executing complex models. We present the design and implementation of a distributed simulation engine, known as D-CD++, which exposes CD++ simulation utilities as machine-consumable services. In addition, we present the design and implementation of the Web-Service components which enable D-CD++ to expose the simulation functionalities to remote users. Enabling CD++ with Web-Services technology provides a solid framework for interoperating different DEVS implementations in order to achieve a standard DEVS Modeling Language and simulation protocols. This paves the road towards DEVS standardization, while providing a mashup approach, which can lead to higher degree of reuse and reduced time to set up and run experiments, and making sharing among remote users more effective. To prove this fact, we integrate it within larger services (such as a 3D visualization engine). showing the mechanism to incorporate to other environments (including geographical information systems, web-based applications and other modeling and simulation tools) through using standard Web-Service tools. The limits of sequential processing continue to be overcome with parallel and distributed architectures and algorithms. In particular, the use of parallel processing for high-performance signal processing and other grand-challenge applications is becoming the norm. However, the costs associated with such systems make it critical to be able to forecast system behavior before a hardware prototype is constructed. Processor libraries and other functional modeling and simulation techniques allow the complexities of actual systems to be portrayed in the form of software-based prototypes with significantly more accuracy than traditional simulation methods. Although the simulation times often grow beyond practical limits, distributed simulation methods have the potential to reduce these times in a scalable fashion. One such method is to implement processor library models with a parallel programming language on perhaps the most flexible, available, cost-effective, and practical of all parallel computing platforms, the workstation cluster. This technique can in many cases achieve near-linear simulation speedup using existing computer resources.

This paper describes the design and implementation of Black Lion, a purely software-based, distributed environment for integrated testing of independent spacecraft mission models. The Black Lion simulation environment is architected to be reconfigurable, allowing for any number of heterogenous software models, across one or multiple computing platforms, to be integrated into a single spacecraft simulation. This architecture enables seamless integration of legacy software models that were never designed to work together into mission-wide simulations. A flat-sat scenario is used to showcase the capabilities of Black Lion. In this flat-sat scenario, Black Lion synchronizes and ties together the following components: a ground system model, a spacecraft physical simulation, and a flight processor emulator in which the flight software application executes. The numerical simulation presented in this paper showcases the closed-loop behavior of the entire spacecraft system.

The possibilities of distributed simulation have been discussed for well over a decade, yet there is only limited evidence of its implementation, particularly within industry. The reasons for this are discussed by identifying the potential applications of distributed simulation and linking these to the ways in which simulation is practiced. The extent to which distributed simulation is a demand led or technology led innovation is discussed. A possible contradiction between distributed simulation and good modeling practice is also identified, that is, the ability to develop large/complex models against the recommendation to develop simple models. This leads to three conclusions: not everyone needs distributed simulation, distributed simulation is both demand and technology led, and the possibilities of distributed simulation are both beneficial and dangerous to modeling practice.

distributed simulation of modular time Petri nets: An approach and a case study exploiting temporal uncertainty

This paper proposes an approach to modular modelling and simulation of complex time-critical systems. The modelling language is represented by Merlin and Farber's Time Petri Nets (TPNs) augmented with inhibitor arcs and modular constructs borrowed from the Petri Net Markup Language (PNML) interchange format. Analysis techniques depend on Temporal Uncertainty Time Warp (TUTW), a time warp algorithm capable of exploiting temporal uncertainty in general optimistic simulations over a networked context. A key feature of the approach is the fact that TPN models naturally exhibit a certain degree of temporal uncertainty which the TUTW control engine can exploit to achieve good speedup without a loss in the accuracy of the simulation results. The developed TUTW/TPN kernel is demonstrated by modelling and simulation of a real-time system example.

An overview of distributed simulation of discrete event systems and the issues associated with it. In this paper, the optimal solution of differential algebraic equation (DAE) systems over a network of processors is investigated. A sliding-mode control (SMC) approach is used to enforce the algebraic constraints of the DAEs. Time delays associated with network communication give rise to a sliding-control problem with sensor time delays. A new approach is presented that decouples this problem into two independent problems. Using this property, a mixed H-infinity optimization approach is applied to minimize errors. The results are applied to solve the problem of the optimal bandwidth allocation between the processors under the constraint of limited communication bandwidth. Experimental results for a distributed simulation application on a TDMA network demonstrate the validity of the approach.

Power systems are distributed in nature. Often they can be divided into sections or groups and treated separately. Terrestrial power systems are divided into separate utilities and are controlled by different regional transmission organization (RTO). Each RTO has detailed data for the area under its control, but only limited data and boundary measurements of the external network. Additionally, shipboard power systems may be divided into sections where local information is kept but not distributed to other parts of the system. Thus, performing a comprehensive power system analysis in such a case is challenging. Also, simulating a large-scale power system with detailed modeling of the components causes a heavy computational burden. One possible way of relieving this problem is to decouple the network into subsystems and solve the subsystems respectively, and then combine the results of the subsystems to get the solution. The way to decouple the network and represent the missing part will affect the result greatly. Also, due to information distribution in the dispatch or data centers, a problem of doing power system analysis with limited available data arises. The equivalent for other networks needs to be constructed to analyze the power system. In this paper, a distributed simulation algorithm is proposed to handle the issues above. A history of distributed simulation is briefly introduced. A generalized coupling method dealing with natural coupling is proposed. distributed simulation models are developed and demonstrated in the virtual test bed (VTB). The models are tested with different network configurations. The test results are presented and analyzed. The performance of the distributed simulation is compared with the steady state and time domain simulation results. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In Operational Research conventional simulation practices typically focus on the conceptualization, development and use of a single model simulated on a single computer by a single analyst. Since the late 1970s the field of distributed simulation has led research into how to speed up simulation and how to compose large-scale simulations consisting of many reusable models running using distributed computers. There have been significant advances in the theories and technologies underpinning distributed simulation and there have been major successes in defence, computer systems design and smart urban environments. However, from an Operational Research perspective, distributed simulation has had little impact on mainstream research and practice. To argue the potential benefits of distributed simulation for Operational Research, this article gives an overview of distributed simulation approaches and technologies as well as discussing the state-of-the-art of distributed simulation applications. It will investigate the potential advantages of distributed simulation for Operational Research and present a possible sustainable future, based on experiences from e-Science, that will help Operational Research meet future challenges such as those emerging from Big Data Analytics, Cyber-physical systems, Industry 4.0, Digital Twins and Smart environments.
