distributed simulation technology based on HLA is an important direction of simulation development. Based on the HLA technology, this paper put forward an idea about establishing Federation between two different simulating platforms. We developed an interface protocol to communicate with HLA service for Federate, and several network protocols on EXata to simulate the networking process. Finally, the EXata which is good at protocol modeling and the Eagle which is good at movement modeling could interactive through a HLA interface and join in a Federation. In this way, the collaborative simulation of two platforms is realized.

A fault-tolerance model based on supervisor-worker mechanism is proposed for the aim of fault tolerance in distributed hydropower plant simulation systems. This model provides adaptive fault-tolerance for simulation calculation through turning the simulation model into a Well-Behaved Process and building an appropriate supervision hierarchy. And this fault-tolerance model is successfully used in a hydropower plant simulator.

Giving collegiate students an opportunity to participate in a multi-faceted development project remains a goal of many computer science programs, as well as modeling and simulation educational programs. A key feature of many complex simulation studies remains that distributed systems are relied on for their implementation, yet presenting such a system to students as a project is often overwhelming. Devising a simpler architecture, which involves not only distributed hardware, but also development of simulation software, and interoperability software, is the goal of the approach described here. As a work in progress, final results are not yet available, but principles and some foundational decisions are presented, with enough details such that the effort can be reproduced by other institutions.

A detailed computer simulation is an important tool for the managing of road traffic. Since it can be very time consuming, it is often performed in a distributed computing environment. The simulated road traffic network is then divided into sub-networks simulated by processes on the nodes of the distributed computer. The inter-process communication necessary for the vehicle transfer and the synchronization can then significantly influence the performance of the distributed road traffic simulation. In this paper, two efficient communication protocols for distributed road traffic simulation, which we developed during our previous research, are compared. These protocols - the Long Step (LS) protocol and the Long Step Binary (LSB) protocol - reduce the inter-process communication using an aggregate message transfer and/or a lossy data compression. Semi-centralized, centralized, and distributed variants of both protocols were thoroughly tested and compared to a reference communication protocol representing a common protocol of distributed road traffic simulators. The tests indicate significant savings of the number of transferred messages and, more importantly, of the total computation time.

The initialization of distributed heterogeneous simulation systems presents challenges regarding the parallelization of object construction and setup. This paper presents a method for parallel initialization of distributed simulation systems that consists of a two phases setup. Object instantiation and setup are split in Config and Post Bind phases to permit fast creation times allowing distribution of initialization tasks among different nodes and removing the ordering requirement between the initialization of interdependent objects. A framework of references is presented to facilitate the use of remote objects in a MPI environment using proxies to access local and remote variables, served by a reference name server built into the simulation engine.

In the design and analysis of discrete event systems, the validation of their models is often addressed via simulation. Petri nets have been applied widely. Lookahead computation is a good method that improves the distributed simulation performance of Timed Transition Petri Nets (TTPN). The approach is based on a part of optimism computed on the prediction time each logical process can determine for its advancement. Timed Petri nets meet these requirements, and use the lookahead to analyze the TTPN model for finding the concurrency and blocking structure, thereby making certain the logical process (LP). The four basic structures and the prediction graph algorithm were presented for the lookahead computing of some complex TTPN models. According to the specialties of lookahead, the lookahead was applied in parallel simulation, and acquire the sufficient condition about the TTPN model existing concurrency.

NRL is developing an end-to-end distributed simulation environment in support of several Navy technology development programs. One of the critical needs in this distributed simulation environment is a tactical communications emulator. Current distributed simulation exercises seldom provide a flexible communications system model with realistic fidelity. As a result, we are creating a Tactical Communications Model Server architecture which operates in Advanced distributed simulations (ADS). We are taking an evolutionary approach that will allow integration of specialized or general Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) communication connectivity models. This paper describes our objectives, the system architecture and design trade-off considerations.

This paper investigates time management for distributed simulations in active networks. Time management is essentially the computation of the Lower Bound Time Stamp (LBTS) across federates in a distributed simulation, including in-transit (in-flight) messages. We show that the LBTS computation is an instance of the distributed Termination Detection (DTD) problem and how DTD algorithms can be applied to LBTS in an active network. These algorithms are potentially much more efficient than traditional LBTS algorithms that rely on point-to-point communication. We introduce the Distinguished Root Node algorithm that can compute LBTS in O(log n) time in general network topologies using a prototype implemented in Java. Experimental results are reported for the Active Time Management Daemon prototype implementation in (1) a simple testbed configuration, (2) a larger cluster environment, (3) an ns-2 simulation of very large configurations, and (4) integrated into an actual HLA-compliant run-time and simulation. While active network algorithms have the potential for improved functionality and superior perfortnance, this potential will only be fully realized when "native" implementations are possible. For wide-scale deployment, real-world issues such as reliable delivery, dynamic routing topologies, security and fault tolerance will have to be systematically addressed. Also, in the area of distributed computing known as grid computing, the management of distributed resources is a key issue. Hence, we plan to use the grid computing infrastructure to manage overlays and facilitate the use of active networks by large-scale, distributed grid applications.

Collaborative Technologies are an innovative area of endeavor that allows engineering teams to define, integrate and conduct distributed simulation experiments as part of a structured, repeatable process. Work-flow techniques can be employed to capture, and frequently automate, internal processes and data flow, necessary to answer questions within a wide variety of application domains. Work-flow implementations can be constructed in a generalized fashion to provide a working process template to address a focused topic area. These templates define the basic scope and tenants of an experimental domain - as well as any required model sets - and allow extensive exploration within the envelope of that scope. One such template was constructed and used to answer questions postulated by the Global Awareness Virtual Test Bed (GAVTB). The domain for this template involved a study of the effects of information superiority on prosecution of time critical targets (TCT's). This experiment and Work-flow template are used as an example case to highlight the approach and application of collaborative techniques in developing Work-flow templates addressing multiple levels of distributed simulation.
