distributed simulators are increasingly being used for their intrinsic advantages in terms of reusability, fault tolerance, performance, and geographic distribution. The development of a distributed simulator, however, requires significant investments in terms of effort if compared to the development of traditional local simulators. This paper introduces jEQN, a Java-based language that significantly reduces the extra effort needed to develop a distributed simulator of extended queueing networks (EQNs), by enabling simulator developers to build distributed simulators as they were to be locally executed. By use of jEQN, simulator developers are enabled to easily switch from a local to a distributed version of an EQN simulator by only modifying few statements of the given local simulator. Moreover, these statements can be easily inferred by a very intuitive graphical procedure. The paper illustrates both the jEQN architecture, based on a layered approach, and the implementation details that contribute to achieve the above mentioned advantages.

A new gluing algorithm is presented that can be used to couple distributed subsystem models for dynamics simulation of mechanical systems. Using this gluing algorithm, subsystem models can be analyzed at their distributed locations, using their own independent solvers, and on their own platforms. The gluing algorithm developed relies only on information available at the subsystem interfaces. This not only enables efficient integration of subsystem models, but also engenders model security by limiting model access only to the exposed interface information. These features make the algorithm suitable for a real and practical distributed simulation environment.

This paper describes the use of distributed simulation within and between organizations to investigate Human-Autonomy Teaming (HAT) with three simulations, showing a progression from integrating automation into a flight following ground station, increased HAT functionality for the ground station, and migration of the autonomy and HAT functionality into the flight deck. The multi-site distributed nature of the final simulation provided high efficiency by allowing researchers to work in their own labs for a long period of data collection. It also provided high fidelity by enabling access to a flight deck environment. Also, it managed costs by taking advantage of facilities and personnel in different locations over a multi-week simulation. Using these simulations, HAT factors were found to enhance ground station and flight deck environments. Conditions with HAT features were preferred by simulation participants to conditions without. Subjective and objective measures of workload were lower with HAT features. These results indicate that future investigations into aircraft support would benefit from the addition of HAT factors and the use of distributed simulation.

Under the joint effects of the basic natural conditions and human activities, soil wind erosion is very serious in the Tuhaimajia River Basin situated in the semi-humid region. The large-scale application of agricultural water saving measures in the river basin is directly affecting the moisture content and its temporal and spatial distribution of crop root zone. Soil moisture is an important factor influencing soil wind erosion, and the effect of agricultural water saving on soil erosion becomes an important indicator for the evaluation of water saving in the river basin. Based on a distributed simulation model for water resources allocation and water cycle (WACM) developed before, a process-based, continuous daily distributed simulation model for soil wind erosion is developed by adding the function of soil wind erosion simulation to WACM, and this model may be used to simulate the regional soil wind erosion process under the current conditions and with the effects of climate change, and water supply & use and farming activities of human beings. With this newly developed model, the 15-year soil wind erosion process in the Tuhaimajia River Basin during 1991-2005 is reconstructed, and it is discovered from the simulation results that the average soil wind erosion modulus of the 15 years is 1.217kg/m(2).a, i.e., the river basin as a whole has slight soil erosion, but soil wind erosion is very serious in some years and in parts of the river basin. The soil wind erosion of 1991 is at a moderate level, and the average soil wind erosion is also at a moderate level in some areas such as Xiajin in Shandong Province. Finally, quantitative analysis is preliminarily made on the effects of large-scale application of water saving measures on soil wind erosion in the river basin, indicating that intensive water saving exerts slight effects on the overall situation of soil wind erosion in the river basin, but produces significant effects in some areas. The paper describes a simulation-based optimization system for manufacturing processes. The principle suitability of simple Threshold Accepting and Great Deluge Algorithms for optimizing practical manufacturing systems is shown, as well as the possibility of parallelizing of these algorithms. A special IP Multicast architecture is introduced which allows the simulation model to be extended to multiple clients and so the efficiency of the optimization algorithms to be increased by concurrent simulation. Each client can log on or log out at an optimization server at any time so that it should be possible to use the idle computer capacity of a single production department or a whole company. The optimization server is implemented as an experimental option in the simulation system simcron MODELLER(R), which is particularly used in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.

In recent years, Web Services technologies have been successfully used for simplifying interoperability while providing scalability and flexibility in multiple applications, including distributed simulation software. The RESTful-CD++ simulation Server provides Web Services according to the REST principles by exposing services as URIs and consumed via HTTP. messages. Therefore, the server becomes a service part of the Web that can be easily mashed-up with other applications and simulation software. In contrast, RPC-style SOAP-based Web Services use the Web as a transmission medium by exposing few URIs and many RPCs. RESTful-CD++ is (to our best knowledge) the only existing RESTful system in this area. Further, this distributed simulation package provides pioneering distributed simulation services using the Web architectural style. We present an overview of the principles, design and implementation of the RESTful-CD++ HTTP server and DCD++ simulation. We show that REST fulfills WS objectives with a much better and easier style than the SOAP-based systems.

Nowadays, embedded systems have a huge amount of computational power and consequently, high complexity. It is quite usual to find different applications being executed in embedded systems. Embedded system design demands for method and tools that allow the simulation and verification in an efficient and practical way. This paper proposes the development and evaluation of a solution for embedded modeling and simulation of embedded systems in a distributed way by the integration of Ptolemy II and the High Level Architecture (HLA), in order to create an environment with high-performance execution of large-scale models. Experimental results demonstrated that the use of a non distributed simulation for some situations can be infeasible. It was demonstrated that a speedup of factor 4 was acquired when a model with 4,000 thousands actors were distributed in 8 different machines. It also presented a model of execution of each CPU core during the simulation.
