On the distributed software architecture of a data analysis workflow: A case study

Hybrid distributed computing software architectures gain great importance in data analysis workflows as the number of available underlying machine learning libraries and data storage systems increase. We argue that there is a need for novel approaches for software architecture designs that can enable machine learning data analysis workflows to run on top of different subsystem libraries. To address this need, we propose a hybrid distributed software architecture in this manuscript. The proposed architecture manages machine learning models for both supervised and unsupervised machine learning data analysis workflows. To show the usability of the proposed architecture, we implement a prototype for the banking sector as a case study. The prototype application includes two data analysis workflows: a workflow for predicting the loan usage tendency of customers, and a workflow for clustering the customers based on the usage patterns of banking loans. The prototype is tested on a large scale banking dataset. Performance tests were carried out to investigate the performance in terms of both responsiveness and scalability of the system. The results obtained reveal the usability of the proposed architecture.

In machine learning (ML) and machine learning operations (MLOps), automation serves as a fundamental pillar, streamlining the deployment of ML models and representing an architectural quality aspect. Support for automation is especially relevant when dealing with ML deployments characterised by the continuous delivery of ML models. Taking automation in MLOps systems as an example, we present novel metrics that offer reliable insights into support for this vital quality attribute, validated by ordinal regression analysis. Our method introduces novel, technology-agnostic metrics aligned with typical Architectural Design Decisions (ADDs) for automation in MLOps. Through systematic processes, we demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in evaluating automation-related ADDs and decision options. Our approach can itself be automated within continuous integration/continuous delivery pipelines. It can also be modified and extended to evaluate any relevant architectural quality aspects, thereby assisting in enhancing compliance with non-functional requirements and streamlining development, quality assurance and release cycles.

In this paper a metrological quality infrastructure is introduced, that considers the strict legal framework and offers transparency, security and resilience. As a foundation, the AnGeWaNt platform is used to connect external infrastructures and foster digital transformation of processes. A fast and easy integration of a vacuum laboratory workflow is demonstrated by benefiting from the distributed service architecture and harmonized RESTful application interfaces. Furthermore, through the modular approach of the AnGeWaNt platform, a rapid service prototyping is enabled by a tool set of services. Providing a digital transformed conformity process to the service hub and avoiding expensive re-implementation. These two exemplary use cases are extensively described and their benefits to the metrological service ecosystem are shown. The main advantage of the interdependent service ecosystem is the flexibility to preserve specialized applications on site, while enabling innovative and custom-tailored services at the same time. GIS-Based software Infrastructure to Model PV Generation in Fine-Grained Spatio-Temporal Domain

Nowadays, we are moving forward to more sustainable societies, where a crucial issue consists in reducing footprint and greenhouse emissions. This transition can be achieved by increasing the penetration of distributed renewable energy sources together with a smarter use of energy. To achieve it, new tools are needed to plan the deployment of such renewable systems by modeling variability' and uncertainty of their generation profiles. In this paper, we present a distributed software infrastructure for modeling and simulating energy production of photovoltaic (PV) systems in urban context. In its core, it performs simulations in a spatio-temporal domain exploiting geographic information systems together with meteorological data to estimate PV generation profiles in real operating conditions. This solution provides results in real-sky conditions with different time intervals: yearly, monthly, and subhourly. To evaluate the accuracy of our simulations, we tested the proposed software infrastructure in a real-world case study. Finally, experimental results are presented and compared with real energy production data collected from PV systems deployed in the case study area.

Ageing, occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, and rising sensitivity towards the disabled are paving the way for new, customized movement assisting devices enabling increased mobility independence, correction of user's kinesis and prevention of diseases, combined with a constant monitoring of kinematics conditions. This paper presents the digital double of the manufacturing, delivery and maintenance chain(s) developed for those devices, focusing on its data model, logics, services and optimization functionalities aimed at improving critical stakeholders' experiences. The proposed discussion emphasizes how a proper combination of physical and digital twins could effectively support customized manufacturing experiences in socially valuable market segments. The actor model of computation has gained significant popularity over the last decade. Its high level of abstraction makes it appealing for concurrent applications in parallel and distributed systems. However, designing a real-world actor framework that subsumes full scalability, strong reliability, and high resource efficiency requires many conceptual and algorithmic additives to the original model. In this paper, we report on designing and building CAF, the C++ Actor Framework. CAF targets at providing a concurrent and distributed native environment for scaling up to very large, high-performance applications, and equally well down to small constrained systems. We present the key specifications and design concepts in particular a message transparent architecture, type-safe message interfaces, and pattern matching facilities that make native actors a viable approach for many robust, elastic, and highly distributed developments. We demonstrate the feasibility of CAF in three scenarios: first for elastic, upscaling environments, second for including heterogeneous hardware like GPUs, and third for distributed runtime systems. Extensive performance evaluations indicate ideal runtime at very low memory footprint for up to 64 CPU cores, or when offloading work to a GPU. In these tests, CAF continuously outperforms the competing actor environments Erlang, Charm++, SalsaLite, Scala, ActorFoundry, and even the raw message passing framework OpenMPI. Nowadays social phenomena like ageing, the increase of obese people and diabetic people and the major sensitivity towards disabled introduce new social requirements for advanced products such as customized work and sport wear. This opens up opportunities for offering bundles of products and services that, relying on embedded sensors, allow the user to constantly monitor and intelligently handle biometric data related to his/her health conditions. In this paper, the platform architecture that supports the provision of such Product Service System is presented mainly focusing on its components and the functionalities they deliver. Possible usage extents and benefits of the proposed solution are analyzed so as to emphasize how the well-being of special target groups can be improved.

Middleware platforms are today solutions to the problem of designing and implementing distributed applications. They provide facilities for heterogeneous software components to communicate remotely, according to various interaction model, for example client server communication or asynchronous message passing. However, middleware platforms, like message busses or object request brokers, hardly provide tools for the design, configuration and installation of complex software architectures. This paper presents the Olan environment which primary objective is the description of complex architecture, their configuration according to application requirements and the deployment on heterogeneous distributed environments. The Olan environment is based on an architecture Description Language where the application is considered as a hierarchy of interconnected software components. A set of software engineering tools assist the application designer in his task of wrapping existing software modules into components which are in turned interconnected through various communication models and finally assembled together according to specific configuration criteria. At run time, a set of system services in charge of automating the installation of the components and their communication channels on a given middleware platform, thus facilitating the overall deployment process of the global application.
