The role of structure in specifying, designing, analysing, constructing and evolving software has been the central theme of our research in distributed software engineering. This structural discipline dictates formalisms and techniques that are compositional, components that are context independent and systems that can be constructed and evolved incrementally. This extended abstract overviews our development of a structural approach to engineering distributed software and gives indications of our future work which moves from explicit to implicit structural specification. With the benefit of hindsight we attempt to give a "rational history" to our research.

Low level difficulties in the development of distributed systems that ore due to non-standard communication protocols and incompatible components or platforms have largely been solved through standardization and commoditization of protocols and platforms. distributed systems are being designed at higher levels of sophistication these days, and having an expressive yet usable specification language is a valuable tool. IOA is a formal language for specifying the semantics of distributed systems. I-5 is a specification framework for architectural definition of distributed systems, also intended as a, basis for configuration management. I-5 has five levels that specify mainly the structural characteristics at different levels of abstraction, but I-5 does not address the semantics or dynamics of distributed systems interactions. We explore the integration of IOA and I-5 to create combined specifications that enjoy the benefits of both specification languages: the five different levels of abstraction of I-5 with their structural specification capabilities are enhanced by a semantic specification written in IOA. We show an example of a specification developed using IOA and I-5 in an integrated way. We consider general approaches to such integrated specifications and discuss the possibilities and limitations of integrating IOA and I-5, as well as our future work towards the complete integration.

To efficiently create sophisticated multimedia presentations (electronic product catalogues) the entire development cycle has to be taken into account. We have developed a set of tools designed for distributed use based on communication via the WWW that support all phases of this process. The software-generating tool GASSI is an essential component of this toolkit. Given a formal specification of a multimedia presentation it automatically generates an implementation. This dramatically reduces the development time and costs as well as the chances for programming errors. The GASSI system is written in Java and it also creates Java code.

HADAS: A network-centric framework for interoperability programming

The explosive growth in global networking infrastructures has created the opportunity to construct systems involving large number of independent and widely-distributed computational components. Administrative and operational autonomy considerations imply that the actual establishment of agreements regarding all aspects of component interaction must be explicitly declared and effectively formed. Moreover, since agreements may evolve over time, their representation needs to be highly tailorable. Design autonomy considerations imply the need to interoperate between pre-existing components, yet not enforce a fixed interoperability standard. The HADAS system addresses both concerns by providing a model and a corresponding programmable interface to component interoperability. Specifically, it provides an integration framework in which components "live", a peer-based configuration model for forming agreements and interconnections between components, and a coordination language for explicitly programming the actual desired distributed computation using these components. The framework rests on an underlying reflective object model that supports mutability and mobility, and an infrastructure that provides object interconnectivity, security and persistence. HADAS is fully implemented in Java and comes with a full programming environment for developing and executing network-centric applications.

software bottlenecks are performance constraints caused by slow execution of a software task. In typical client-server systems a client task must wait in a blocked state for the server task to respond to its requests, so a saturated server will slow down all its clients. A Rendezvous Network generalizes this relationship to multiple layers of servers with send-and-wait interactions (rendezvous), a two-phase model of task behavior, and to a unified model for hardware and software convention. software bottlenecks have different symptoms, different behavior when the system is altered, and a different cure from the conventional bottlenecks seen in queueing network models of computer systems, caused by hardware limits. The differences are due to the ''push-back'' effect of the rendezvous, which spreads the saturation of a server to its clients. The paper describes software bottlenecks by examples, gives a definition, shows bow they can be located and alleviated, and gives a method for estimating the performance benefit to be obtained. Ultimately, if all the software bottlenecks can be removed, the performance limit will be due to a conventional hardware bottleneck.

TRACTABLE DATA-FLOW ANALYSIS FOR distributed SYSTEMS

Automated behavior analysis is a valuable technique in the development and maintainence of distributed systems. In this paper, we present a tractable dataflow analysis technique for the detection of unreachable states and actions in distributed systems. The technique follows an approximate approach described by Reif and Smolka, but delivers a more accurate result in assessing unreachable states and actions. The higher accuracy is achieved by the use of two concepts: action dependency and history sets. Although the technique, does not exhaustively detect all possible errors, it detects nontrivial errors with a worst-case complexity quadratic to the system size. It can be automated and applied to systems with arbitrary loops and nondeterministic structures. The technique thus provides practical and tractable behavior analysis for preliminary designs of distributed systems. This makes it an ideal candidate for an interactive checker in software development tools. The technique is illustrated with case studies of a pump control system and an erroneous distributed program. Results from a prototype implementation are presented.

A TEMPLATE-BASED APPROACH TO THE GENERATION OF distributed APPLICATIONS USING A NETWORK OF WORKSTATIONS

Despite rapid growth in workstation and networking technologies, the workstation environment continues to pose challenging problems to shared processing. In this paper, we present a computational model and system for the generation of distributed applications in such an environment. The well-known RPC model is modified by a novel concept known as template attachment. A computation consists of a network of sequential procedures which have been encapsulated in templates. A small selection of templates is available from which a distributed application with the desired communication behavior can be rapidly built. The system generates all the required low-level code for correct synchronization, communication, and scheduling. This results in a system that is easy to use and flexible, and can provide a programmer with the desired amount of control in using idle processing power over a network of workstations. The practical feasibility of the model has been demonstrated by implementing it for Unix1-based workstation environments.

The Contractual Approach in the Mars Design Environment

Over the past few years the need for a systematic design of realtime systems has received considerable attention due to its increasingly critical and complex applications. The MARS Design System (MARDS) supports a design engineer in the development of time-critical distributed applications according to the MARS architecture by a certain design methodology and automated tools covering the whole system life cycle. The technical development tools are integrated into a single coherent environment by a project management strategy based on a “contractual” approach. This paper presents how the different distributed tools and their information exchange are realized by the management means of contracts. A contract passing scenario is given and its automated implementation illustrated.
