A model is presented for design representation and analysis for distributed software systems. The model uses modified Petri nets to represent graphically the structure and dynamic behavior of distributed systems at various design levels. With the model, the distributed system is represented as a unified collection of software components, which are externally described by: 1. input-output control states, 2. data types and objects, and 3. specifications for control and data transfer. These components are internally described by: 1. partially ordered subcomponents and local control states, 2. data types, and 3. data objects. software components are interconnected through the sharing of control states and data objects. The distributed system design can be analyzed for concurrency properties by transforming the modified Petri net representation into an equivalent ordinary Petri net.

A distributed soft ware system for numerical simulations of atmospheric at physicochemical processes is presented. It is a multi-layer Java based system for theoretical investigation of complex interactions of atmospheric trace gases and ice particles. The simulations are based on the fundamental theory of Langmuir adsorption and second Fick's law applied for adsorption, desorption and diffusion processes. The system consists of three basic layers: (1) input/output interface layer. (2) dispatcher layer. (3) grid-based layer for simulations distributed over multiple machines. The core software module used in level (3) is based on previously published by us software prototype for simulations of adsorption, desorption and diffusion in a closed system and Flow Tube Reactor. The main task of the current distributed system is to derive numerical estimations of several significant. constants: adsorption/desorption rates, ice entry rate, ice hulk diffusion coefficient and etc. The constants are estimated by comparison of experimental signals from a Flow Tube Reactor and simulations results front the system described in this paper. The difference between both curve profiles is minimized by an exhaustive search in a multi-dimensional parameter space which represents all possible values of the physicochemical constants. The dispatcher layer of the system defines several regions of the multi-dimensional parameter space. For each region, a separate task is configured and dispatched to a node front a computer GRID or cluster. The entire parameter space is searched in a parallel manner and after that all results are united in order to find the global minimum of the difference between experimental and simulated curves. The results are printed via the input/output software layer. Example kinetic simulations performed by the software system are presented and discussed.

The development of hard X-ray nanoprobe techniques has given rise to a number of experimental methods, like nano-XAS, nano-XRD, nano-XRF, ptychography and tomography. Each method has its own unique data processing algorithms. With the increase in data acquisition rate, the large amount of generated data is now a big challenge to these algorithms. In this work, an intuitive, user-friendly software system is introduced to integrate and manage these algorithms;by taking advantage of the loosely coupled, component-based design approach of the system, the data processing speed of the imaging algorithm is enhanced through optimization of the parallelism efficiency. This study provides meaningful solutions to tackle complexity challenges faced in synchrotron data processing.

The selection of an architectural style for a given software system is an important factor in satisfying its quality requirements. In battery-powered environments, such as mobile and pervasive systems, efficiency with respect to energy consumption has increasingly been recognized as an important quality attribute. In this paper, we present a framework that (1) facilitates early estimation of the energy consumption induced by an architectural style in a distributed software system, and (2) consequently enables an engineer to use energy consumption estimates along with other quality attributes in determining the most appropriate style for a given distributed application. We have applied the framework on five distributed systems styles to date, and have evaluated it for precision and accuracy using a particular middleware platform that supports the implementation of those styles. In a large number of application scenarios, our framework exhibited excellent precision, in that it was consistently able to correctly rank the five styles and estimate the relative differences in their energy consumptions. Moreover, the framework has also proven to be accurate: its estimates were within 7% of the different style implementations' actually measured energy consumptions.

We proposed and designed a distributed software architecture framework model based on the component by combining the C/S and B/W/S modes, then discussed the stratification and separation principle of system function decomposition. Application examples in the general query system show that the open architecture is scalable, easy to adapt and so on.

A major challenge in design of distributed software systems is predicting and avoiding unexpected behaviors at the run time. Detecting those behaviors after the system is implemented can be very costly and detecting them during design and implementation stages is a cost effective alternative. Therefore, model-based verification at early design stages is an important step in designing distributed systems. Most of the existing verification techniques analyze system behaviors by going from specifications to state machines that model individual components' behaviors. Although those methods are shown to be effective in detecting unexpected behaviors for each component, they fail to detect the unexpected behaviors that occur at the system level. There exist a few ad-hoc methods to combine components' behavior into system level behavior. In this paper, we devise a method that considers interactions among components, and propose an algorithm to combine the behavior models of interacting components. The proposed algorithm can be used to perform automated system-level verification. A case study is developed to validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in detecting the implied scenarios for distributed system.

A study on managing the performance requirements of a distributed service delivery software system

Like other non-functional requirements (NFR), performance requirements can have global impact on a system. This article presents a preliminary study on the management of performance requirements of a distributed service delivery (DSD) system using the 'Performance Requirement Framework (PeRF)' developed by Nixon [B.A. Nixon, Management of performance requirements for information systems, IEEE Transactions on software Engineering 20 (12), (2000)]. Various steps in the framework are explained in the context of the DSD system, and the effects of some design decisions on the performance have been evaluated. PeRF was originally developed for information systems. The article shows how the framework can be adapted to a distributed system. However, additional studies on a number of distributed systems need to be carried out in order to develop a full framework for performance requirements for distributed systems, or perhaps for different categories of such systems. Modern automotive E/E systems are implemented as distributed real-time software systems. The constantly growing complexity of safety-relevant software functions leads to an increased importance of testing during system integration of such systems. systematic metrics are required to guide the testing process during system integration by providing coverage measures and stopping criteria but few studied approaches exist. For this purpose, we introduce a data-flow based observation scheme which captures the interplay behavior of involved ECUs during test execution and failure occurrences. In addition, we introduce a data flow-based coverage criterion designed for black box integration. By applying the observation scheme to test cases and associated faults found during execution, we first analyze similarities in data flow coverage. By further analyzing the data flow of failures, that slipped through the phase of system integration testing, we evaluate the usefulness of test gaps identified by using the suggested coverage criterion. We found major differences in the usage of data flow between undetected failures and existing test cases. In addition, we found that for the studied system under test the occurrence of failures is not necessarily a direct consequence of the test execution due to functional dependencies and side effects. Overall, these findings highlight the potential and limitations of data flow-based measures to be formalized as coverage or stopping criteria for the integration testing of distributed software systems.

Lots of distributed software systems use layer-based architecture;the lower layer provides functionalities and services to upper layer via various interfaces and protocols. When the system is evolving, layers may grow or split further, each layer expands horizontally with more modules, and the overall functionalities get more complex. software modules providing similar functionalities or services may bring more redundancy, which makes the building and deploying of distributed software systems more challenging. Traditional deployment strategy is process-centric. One server controls the whole deployment procedure sequentially, which usually fails to achieve expected efficiency. Especially when those relatively independent modules in the same layer share similar deploying strategy, the traditional way raise a lot of duplicated work with high cost. Furthermore, it's difficult to locate faults and fix errors dynamically due to the stream-based style. In this paper, we propose an automatic deployment approach using a coordination model for distributed software systems. Tasks are planned based on the overall system capabilities and dependencies between modules. The coordination node monitors and maintains the task status. Clients can actively apply for tasks from the coordination node. This approach utilizes system resources effectively and improves deployment automation. Our approach has been applied in a large web services company to deploy a mini version of a search engine. Comparing with traditional methods, this new approach achieves much better results.

State-of-the-art distributed software systems as well as applications as, e.g., e-commerce, e-business, eservices etc. are fundamentally based on the paradigm of distributed software or application services. Such services may already exist or may be newly developed for specific application purposes. They are able to interact - also in open and heterogeneous distributed environments - based on standardised interfaces and interconnection protocols as, e.g., provided by related "Web Services" standards. On the application side, advanced service-based software systems reflect (e.g. business) scenarios which are increasingly structured as sets of distributed co-operating entities. Such applications typically involve several and heterogeneous services from various sources - internally as well as from external sites. Further on, based on elementary services, more complex business processes or procedures help to realise more complex business semantics by composing services - even in dynamically changing environments according to predefined (functional as well as non-functional) application needs. If, finally, such service become more and more "independent" and act "autonomously" (e.g. as "agents") for achieving given goals and characteristics, services as well as business procedures should increasingly self-organise according to another actual distributed systems paradigm. The talk gives an overview of related problems, solutions, concepts, projects, implementations as well as some related standards.
