The discrete time ToolBus - A software coordination architecture

The notion of "time" plays an important role when coordinating large, heterogeneous, distributed software systems. We present a generic coordination architecture that supports relative and absolute, discrete time. First, we briefly sketch the TOOLBUS coordination architecture. Next, we give a minor and a major example of its use: a calculator and a distributed auction. Finally, we sketch a framework for describing the operational behavior of the TOOLBUS, and conclude with a survey of implementation aspects and applications. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Service Virtualization Using a Non-von Neumann Parallel, distributed, and Scalable Computing Model

This paper describes a prototype implementing a high degree of transaction resilience in distributed software systems using a non-von Neumann computing model exploiting parallelism in computing nodes. The prototype incorporates fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) management using a signaling network overlay and allows the dynamic control of a set of distributed computing elements in a network. Each node is a computing entity endowed with self-management and signaling capabilities to collaborate with similar nodes in a network. The separation of parallel computing and management channels allows the end-to-end transaction management of computing tasks (provided by the autonomous distributed computing elements) to be implemented as network-level FCAPS management. While the new computing model is operating system agnostic, a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python (LAMP) based services architecture is implemented in a prototype to demonstrate end-to-end transaction management with auto-scaling, self-repair, dynamic performance management and distributed transaction security assurance. The implementation is made possible by a non-von Neumann middleware library providing Linux process management through multi-threaded parallel execution of self-management and signaling abstractions. We did not use Hypervisors, Virtual machines, or layers of complex virtualization management systems in implementing this prototype.

The ATLAS detector at CERN records particle collision "events" delivered by the Large Hadron Collider. Its data-acquisition system identifies, selects, and stores interesting events in near real-time, with an aggregate throughput of several 10 GB/s. It is a distributed software system executed on a farm of roughly 2000 commodity worker nodes communicating via TCP/IP on an Ethernet network. Event data fragments are received from the many detector readout channels and are buffered, collected together, analyzed and either stored permanently or discarded. This system, and data-acquisition systems in general, are sensitive to the latency of the data transfer from the readout buffers to the worker nodes. Challenges affecting this transfer include the many-to-one communication pattern and the inherently bursty nature of the traffic. In this paper we introduce the main performance issues brought about by this workload, focusing in particular on the so-called TCP incast pathology. Since performing systematic studies of these issues is often impeded by operational constraints related to the mission-critical nature of these systems, we focus instead on the development of a simulation model of the ATLAS data-acquisition system, used as a case study. The simulation is based on the well established OMNeT++ framework. Its results are compared with existing measurements of the system's behavior. The successful reproduction of the measurements by the simulations validates the modeling approach. We share some of the preliminary findings obtained from the simulation, as an example of the additional possibilities it enables, and outline the planned future investigations.

Service Oriented-Architecture (SOA) is becoming more and more important as a paradigm for the development of distributed software systems. In this approach user applications are built of a set of collaborating services running in a distributed environment of Internet. Although the idea of SOA appeals strongly to the software development practitioners, there are also numerous pitfalls that cause risks of different severity for SOA software reliability. The paper provides a survey of these critical risks and proposes a framework for Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) of SOA systems based on Web Services.

Today many industrial facilities have a lot of industrial control software systems used in various ways. These systems work in all kinds of architectures, starting from the simple "one application on one computer attached to a process" to more complex systems such as client-server-database, multi-tier applications, etc. Being provided by different vendors, there is a problem of managing the applications, developed using various technologies and running on different environments, implying administration problems and many security aspects. The information is spread into many places, this making it difficult to have a global view on the enterprise's resources. The solution is to have a single software system which to provide functionality for all the enterprise, into a unified manner. Our distributed software applications architecture comes to deal with the problems presented above. The system has three main levels of application: - The data source, having two main parts: software applications that communicate with the equipment and a connector to the system. - The server, gathering all the data from the data sources, processing and storing it into the database. - The client applications, including the interface of the system with the user. The technology used for developing this system is web-oriented.

Scenarios are commonly used for software requirements modeling. Scenarios describe how system components, users and the environment interact to complete the system functionality. However, several scenarios are needed to represent a complete system behavior and combining the scenarios may generate implied scenarios (IS) that are associated with some unexpected behavior. The unexpected behavior is commonly known as Emergent Behavior (EB), which is not evident in the requirements and design phase but may degrade the quality of service and/or cause irreparable damage during execution. Detecting and fixing EB/IS in the early phases can save on deployment cost while minimizing the run-time hazards. In this paper, we present a machine learning approach to model and identify the interactions between system components and verify which interactions are safe and which may lead to EB/IS. The experimental result shows that our approach can efficiently detect different types of EB/IS and applicable to large scale systems.

Self-adaptation is a prominent property for developing complex distributed software systems. Notable approaches to deal with self-adaptation are the runtime goal model artifacts. Goals are generally invariant along the system lifecycle but contain points of variability for allowing the system to decide among many alternative behaviors. This work investigates how it is possible to provide goal models at run-time that do not contain tasks, i.e. the description of how to address goals, thus breaking the design-time tie up between Tasks and Goals, generally outcome of a means-end analysis. In this vision the system is up to decide how to combine its available Capabilities: the Proactive Means-End Reasoning. The impact of this research line is to implement a goal-oriented form of self-adaptation where goal models can be injected at runtime. The paper also introduces MUSA, a Middleware for User-driven Service self-Adaptation.

Commissioning time for an instrument at an observatory is precious, especially the night time. Whenever astronomers come up with a software feature request or point out a software defect, the software engineers have the task to find a solution and implement it as fast as possible. In this project phase, the software engineers work under time pressure and stress to deliver a functional instrument control software (ICS). The shortness of development time during commissioning is a constraint for software engineering teams and applies to the ARGOS project as well. The goal of the ARGOS (Advanced Rayleigh guided Ground layer adaptive Optics system) project is the upgrade of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) with an adaptive optics (AO) system consisting of six Rayleigh laser guide stars and wavefront sensors. For developing the ICS, we used the technique Test-Driven Development (TDD) whose main rule demands that the programmer writes test code before production code. Thereby, TDD can yield a software system, that grows without defects and eases maintenance. Having applied TDD in a calm and relaxed environment like office and laboratory, the ARGOS team has profited from the benefits of TDD. Before the commissioning, we were worried that the time pressure in that tough project phase would force us to drop TDD because we would spend more time writing test code than it would be worth. Despite this concern at the beginning, we could keep TDD most of the time also in this project phase This report describes the practical application and performance of TDD including its benefits, limitations and problems during the ARGOS commissioning. Furthermore, it covers our experience with pair programming and continuous integration at the telescope.

When engineering distributed software systems based on self-organising emergent solutions, assessing and understanding the relation between the microscopic dynamics and the resulting macroscopic behaviour is a fundamental issue. In our research, we investigate a systematic approach for understanding the link between microscopic and macroscopic behaviour, based on a numerical analysis technique called Equation-Free Macroscopic Analysis. Instead of deriving a (simplified) macroscopic model, equation-free methods only assume that such a model exists, and mimic a macroscopic simulation using only appropriately initialised simulations with the complete system. There are two crucial issues in this technique. The first issue is defining a complete set of macroscopic variables that would uniquely characterise the self-organising emergent behaviour in the solution. The second issue is the definition of a suitable initialisation operator, that can create a good initial condition for the complete system, given only the values of the macroscopic variables. In this paper, we propose a bottom-up approach for the selection of macroscopic variables and the related initialisation operator. We show how the equation-free approach can guide simulations to systematically increase understanding of the studied system. To illustrate the approach, we use a data clustering system inspired by termite nest building algorithms.
