A major threat to distributed software systems' reliability is vicious cycles, which are observed when an event in the distributed software system's execution causes a system degradation, and the degradation, in turn, causes more of such events. Vicious cycles often result in large-scale cloud outages that are hard to recover from due to their self-reinforcing nature. This paper formally defines Vicious Cycle, and conducts the first in-depth study of 33 real-world vicious cycles in 13 widely-used open-source distributed software systems, shedding light on the root causes, triggering conditions, and fixing strategies of vicious cycles, with over a dozen concrete implications to combat them. Our findings show that the majority of the vicious cycles are caused by incorrect error handlers, where the handlers do not obtain enough information to distinguish between 1) an error induced by incoming requests and 2) an error induced by an unexpected interference from another error handler. This paper further performs a feasibility study by 1) building a monitoring tool that prevents one type of vicious cycle by collecting information to make a more informed decision in error handling, and 2) investigating the effectiveness of one commonly suggested practice-injecting exponential backoff-to prevent vicious cycles induced by unconstrained retry.

Man-At-The-End (MATE) attacks and fortifications are difficult to analyze, model, and evaluate predominantly for three reasons;firstly, the attacker is human and, therefore, utilizes motivation, creativity, and ingenuity. Secondly, the attacker has limitless and authorized access to the target. Thirdly, all major protections stand up to a determined attacker till a certain period of time. Digital assets range from business to personal use, from consumer devices to home networks, the public Internet, the cloud, and the Internet of Things - where traditional computer and network security are inadequate to address MATE attacks. MATE is fundamentally a hard problem. Much of the extant focus to deal with MATE attacks is purely technical;though security is more than just a technical issue. The main objective of the paper is to mitigate the consequences of MATE attacks through the human element of security and highlight the need for this element to form a part of a holistic security strategy alongside the necessary techniques and technologies. This paper contributes by taking software protection (SP) research to a new realm of challenges. Moreover, the paper elaborates the concept of MATE attacks, the different forms, and the analysis of MATE versus insider threats to present a thematic taxonomy of a MATE attack. The ensuing paper also highlights the fundamental concept of digital assets, and the core protection mechanisms and their qualitative comparison against MATE attacks. Finally, we present state-of-the-art trends and cutting-edge future research directions by taking into account only the human aspects for young researchers and professionals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. An analytical model for source code distributability verification

ne way to speed up the execution of sequential programs is to divide them into concurrent segments and execute such segments in a parallel manner over a distributed computing environment. We argue that the execution speedup primarily depends on the concurrency degree between the identified segments as well as communication overhead between the segments. To guar-antee the best speedup, we have to obtain the maximum possible concurrency degree between the identified segments, taking communication overhead into consideration. Existing code distributor and multi-threading approaches do not fulfill such re-quirements;hence, they cannot provide expected distributability gains in advance. To overcome such limitations, we propose a novel approach for verifying the distributability of sequential object-oriented programs. The proposed approach enables users to see the maximum speedup gains before the actual distributability implementations, as it computes an objective function which is used to measure different distribution values from the same program, taking into consideration both remote and sequential calls. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach successfully determines the distributability of different real-life software applications compared with their real-life sequential and distributed implementations.

Significant gap between software programming model and execution model is one major slowing factor in the development of the emerging field of Internet-of-Things. It is also one of the main reasons why software systems often lag behind hardware technologies and fail to capture the full potentials of modern day hardware infrastructure, which is mostly parallel and distributed. We need to change the way we think about software fundamentally, and make it, at its most basic level, to work like the physical world works: distributed, parallel, loosely connected, and asynchronous. KnoRBA achieves this by making the basic components of any program, such as a common word processor, to be asynchronous mobile agents. Then through provision of implementation and location transparency it establishes integration across a distributed environment. This extended abstract is an early introduction to the new revision of KnoRBA that makes it efficient in a domain like sensor networks where power and bandwidth are critical factors.

The hardest part of building a software system is deciding what to build. Errors in this part of the work are, overall, the most serious in software development, and the hardest to repair. Therefore requirements elicitation is arguably the most critical. The requirements that drive the decision towards building a distributed architecture for large-scale systems are usually of a non-functional nature, such as scalability, openness, heterogeneity, availability, reliability and fault-tolerance. Requirements are essential to understand concepts about software architectures and software patterns. Therefore teaching large scale software systems design requires covering significant material while ensuring students experience the wicked nature of complex systems. This paper describes a unified project experience with focus on requirements engineering that addresses many of the areas required in a distributed systems development experience. The most important lesson learned is that students benefit from being immersed in and reflecting upon carefully planned activities of large-scale software design with emphasis on its inherent complexity. The planned experience is based on the principles suggested by research related to learn about complex physical and social systems.

The verification of Multiagent systems (MAS) and distributed software systems (DSS) has taken a special attention due to the growing demand of having DSS in recent years. The distributed functionality and lack of having a central control in MAS and DSS may cause to emerge new behaviors in the execution time. This unexpected behavior which was not seen in the requirements is known as emergent behavior and may cause irreparable damages. Detection of these emergent behaviors is more valuable and cost effective in the early phases compared to detecting them after the deployment. In this paper we propose a new technique for the detection of a specific type of emergent behavior in the design phase. We take the advantage of social network visualization in this method. The novelty and direct advantage of this technique is presenting the exact point and cause of emergent behavior.

This paper describes a prototype implementing a high degree of fault tolerance, reliability and resilience in distributed software systems. The prototype incorporates fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security (FCAPS) management using a signaling network overlay and allows the dynamic control of a set of nodes called distributed Intelligent Managed Elements (DIMEs) in a network. Each DIME is a computing entity (implemented in Linux and in the future will be ported to Windows) endowed with self-management and signaling capabilities to collaborate with other DIMEs in a network. The prototype incorporates a new computing model proposed by Mikkilineni in 2010, with signaling network overlay over the computing network and allows parallelism in resource monitoring, analysis and reconfiguration. A workflow is implemented as a set of tasks, arranged or organized in a directed acyclic graph (DAG) and executed by a managed network of DIMEs. distributed DIME networks provide a network computing model to create distributed computing clouds and execute distributed managed workflows with high degree of agility, availability, reliability, performance and security.

Using embedded data drivers system engine could access to existing information sources. Convenient extensions for technologies basic functional modules are also available.
