distributed video coding is a research field which brings together error coding techniques along with video compression ones. Its core part is a Slepian-Wolf encoder which often involves turbo codes because of their strong error correction capabilities. The turbo encoder generates parity bits which are sent to refine the side information constructed at the decoder by interpolation using the neighboring key frames already received. For bit rate flexibility, these parity bits are punctured and sent gradually upon request until the receiver can correctly decode the frame. In this work, we introduce a novel distributed video coding scheme with adaptive puncturing that sends more parity bits when the virtual channel is noisy and less parity bit when it is not the case. Considerable compression performance improvement over the puncturing techniques used in literature is reported.

Controlling the GOP (group of picture) size in distributed video coding is an important task since it has significant impact on the video coding performance. This paper presents a method to control the GOP size in the distributed video coding based on the Distortion-Quantization optimal and frame activity. To perform GOP size control adaptively, firstly this work compute the frame activity in current frame of video sequence, which take GOP size and frame scene changes in frame into account at the same time. Then, the GOP size control method is obtained based on the computation of the best Distortion-Quantization parameter and the frame activity. Experimental results show that the proposed method not only achieves notable video quality improvements, but also reduced the average distortion, comparisons with the conventional scheme.

In distributed video coding, motion estimation is typically performed at the decoder to generate the side information, increasing the decoder complexity while providing low complexity encoding in comparison with predictive video coding. Motion estimation can be performed once to create the side information or several times to refine the side information quality along the decoding process. In this paper, motion estimation is performed at the decoder side to generate multiple side information hypotheses which are adaptively and dynamically combined, whenever additional decoded information is available. The proposed iterative side information creation algorithm is inspired in video denoising filters and requires some statistics of the virtual channel between each side information hypothesis and the original data. With the proposed denoising algorithm for side information creation, a RD performance gain up to 1.2 dB is obtained for the same bitrate.

Multi-view video plus depth (MVD) is gathering huge attention, as witnessed by the recent standardization activity, since its rich information about the geometry of the scene allows high-quality synthesis of virtual viewpoints. distributed video coding of such kind of content is a challenging problem whose solution could enable new services as interactive multi-view streaming. In this work we propose to exploit the geometrical information of the MVD format in order to estimate inter-view occlusions without communication among cameras. Experimental results show a bit rate reduction up to 77% for low bit rate w.r.t. state-of-the-art architectures.

In this article, a two-description distributed video coding (2D-DVC) is proposed to address the robust video transmission of low-power capturers. The odd/even frame-splitting partitions a video into two sub-sequences to produce two descriptions. Each description consists of two parts, where part 1 is a zero-motion based H. 264-coded bitstream of a sub-sequence and part 2 is a Wyner-Ziv (WZ)-coded bitstream of the other sub-sequence. As the redundant part, the WZ-coded bitstream guarantees that the lost sub-sequence is recovered when one description is lost. On the other hand, the redundancy degrades the rate-distortion performance as no loss occurs. A residual 2D-DVC is employed to further improve the rate-distortion performance, where the difference of two sub-sequences is WZ encoded to generate part 2 in each description. Furthermore, an optimization method is applied to control an appropriate amount of redundancy and therefore facilitate the tuning of central/side distortion tradeoff. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes achieve better performance than the referenced one especially for low-motion videos. Moreover, our schemes still maintain low-complexity encoding property.

distributed video coding (DVC) does not demand motion estimation (ME) and compensation (MC) at the encoder, but only at the decoder and so it is more suitable for applications that require a simple encoder, like wireless sensor networks. In DVC the video sequence is split into Key Frames (KFs) and Wyner-Ziv Frames (WZFs): the first are intra-coded and the latter are coded by a channel code and only the parity bits are sent to the decoder. The KFs are available at the decoder, while we need to estimate the WZF and correct this estimation with parity bits. One critical step is the estimation of the WZF. The method of the state of the art, with which we compare, is given by DISCOVER. It estimates the WZF by linear interpolating the two adjacent KFs. We propose a higher order motion interpolation for WZF estimation by using four KFs. Due to the high computational efforts, we propose also a fast algorithm that halves the complexity of the previous method. We note that the results of the fast method are comparable with the original one. An other proposal is to increase the density of the motion vector field in order to improve the estimation of the WZF.

In distributed video coding (DVC), side information (SI) is crucial to the decoding performance and reconstruction quality of the image. Therefore, we propose to make use of the temporal correlation between the partially reconstructed WZ frame and the decoded key frames as well as the spatial correlation in the WZ frame to revise the SI for better quality. Furthermore, the parameter of the correlation noise model between the modified SI and the partially reconstructed WZ frame is estimated as the approximation of that for the other parts which have not been decoded in the WZ frame. The experimental results illustrate that compared with the method in DISCOVER, the PSNR gain for our proposed SI generation and correlation parameter estimation method can achieve up to 1.4db.

distributed video coding (DVC) is an emerging application of distributed source coding (DSC). Since coding complexity is shifted from encoder sides to decoder sides, DVC is appropriate and useful for the environments where low power encoding is allowed. The coding performance of DVC is greatly affected by side information extracted from bi-directional key frames which is enhanced through channel decoding. Therefore, efficient side information extraction methods have been considered to be an important subject for better coding performance of DVC. In this paper, we propose a method to effectively extract the side information for which motion-compensated frame interpolation is performed based on asymmetric 6-tap FIR filters in sub-pel motion estimation. For more precise motion estimation, motion trajectories are found through several consecutive key frames by linear regression. To avoid unreliable estimation on motion, a criterion function decides whether the extracted side information is effective or not. Experimental results show that the proposed side information extraction method achieves average 0.3dB in BDPSNR and maximum 0.85 dB improvements in coding gain compared to the DISCOVER codec.

distributed video coding is a video paradigm where most of the computational complexity can be transfered from video encoders to the decoders. This allows for video sequences transmission involving inexpensive encoders and powerful central decoders. Unfortunately, due to typically numerous feedback requests and needed decoder run cycles, this often leads to unacceptably long decoding latencies. One approach to addressing the latency problem consists in estimating an initial number of parity bit chunks (INC) that are then sent at once to reduce the number of these decoders run cycles. The challenge is to properly estimate as accurately as possible the INC without neither underestimation nor overestimation. This paper proposes two INC estimation techniques based on the temporal correlation between successive Wyner-Ziv frames and on the correlation between the different bit-planes.

distributed video coding (DVC) is an emerging video coding paradigm for the systems that require encoders having low complexity that are supported by decoders having high complexity as would be required for, say, real-time video capture and streaming from one mobile phone to display on another. Under the assumption of an error-free transmission channel, the coding efficiency of current DVC systems is still below that of the latest conventional video codecs, such as H.264/AVC. To increase coding efficiency we propose in this paper that either every second Key frame or every Wyner-Ziv frame is downsampled by a factor of two in both dimensions prior to encoding and subsequent transmission. However, this would necessitate upsampling coupled with interpolation at the decoder. Simple interpolation (e. g., bilinear or FIR filter) would not suffice since high-frequency (HF) spatial image content would be missing. Instead, we propose the incorporation of a super-resolution (SR) technique that is based upon using example High Resolution images with content that are specific to the Low Resolution scene that needs its HF content to be recovered. The example-based scene-specific SR technique will add computational complexity to the decoder side of the DVC system, which is allowable within the DVC framework. Rate-distortion curves will show that this novel combination of SR with DVC improves the system performance by up to several decibels as measured by the PSNR, and can actually exceed the performance of an H.264/AVC codec, using GOP=IP, for some video sequences.
