distributed video coding (DVC) is a new paradigm in video coding, which is receiving a lot of interests nowadays. Side Information (SI) generation is a key function in the DVC decoder, and plays a key-role in determining the performance of the codec. This paper proposes an improved side information generation scheme, which exploits both spatial and temporal correlations in the sequences. Partially decoded Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames, based on initial SI by Motion Compensation Temporal Interpolation (MCTI), are exploited to improve the performance of the whole SI generation. In addition, an enhanced temporal frame interpolation is proposed, including motion vector refinement and smoothing, optimal compensation mode selection, and a new matching criterion for motion estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve up to 2.3 dB improvement in Rate Distortion (RD) performance for video with high motion, when compared to state-of-the-art DVC.

distributed video coding (DVC), which can move the computational complexity burden from the encoder to the decoder, is an effective source coding paradigm for promising video applications over wireless networks, e.g. wireless video surveillance and wireless video sensor networks. For these video applications, it is crucial to provide an efficient way to assess the quality of reconstructed videos accurately. However, due to absence of original frames at the decoder, how to estimate the reconstructed video quality of DVC remains a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a source distortion estimation method for DVC, in which the distortion incurred by the quantization and reconstruction is taken into account. Focusing on the statistical distortion of a transformed coefficient in each Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frame, the proposed method measures the average distortion of WZ frames utilizing only the coding information available at the decoder, i.e. the coefficients of side information (SI) frames and the decoded coefficients outputted from a decoder of low density parity code (LDPC). Besides, we propose an estimation algorithm of probability distribution parameters to deal with the case that all the coefficients of a sub-band are zero values by using an approximate principle. Experiments have been conducted to validate the accuracy of our estimation method. For no requirement of original WZ frames at the decoder, the presented method can be suitable for real-time video applications.

In a distributed video coding problem, use of a correct model for the correlation noise plays a significant role in improving the decoding performance and consequently in providing higher coding efficiency. In this work, we first study the predictive and additive correlation noise models at the DCT coefficient band level for transform-domain distributed video coding. Then, bounds on compression rates for encoding the quantized DCT coefficient band are obtained for both the correlation noise models. We then investigate how the distribution of the DCT coefficient bands in each WZ frame affects the compression rate bound in each correlation noise model. It is shown that for the DCT coefficient bands being non-uniformly distributed, the compression rate bound in the additive correlation noise model lower than that in the predictive one. Moreover, it is shown that selecting a wrong correlation model leads to compression rate loss in the decoder. The simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical investigation.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a video coding paradigm that aims at shifting the complexity from the encoder to the decoder. Most encoding schemes in DVC use a GOP size of 2 or 3 which is fixed and doesn't depend on the video characteristics. In this paper, we propose an architecture that has a unique and simple GOP size control module that results in greater rate-distortion (RD) performance. The proposed codec also has an efficient two-phase block classification scheme and a prioritized block classification scheme to further improve the efficiency. It also uses arithmetic coding instead of the iterative turbo or low density parity check accumulate (LD-PCA) codes used in most other DVC codecs, thus reducing system latency tremendously. Results show that the proposed codec outperforms a GOP size control algorithm from literature with a gain of almost 4dB at similar bitrates.

This paper presents a BitpLAne SelecTive (BLAST) distributed video coding (DVC) system. In the proposed system, the importance of each bitplane is measured at the decoder, and only the bitplanes with higher importance would be decoded. A minimum-distance symbol reconstruction is proposed to estimate the rest of the bitplanes by using the side information and the decoded bitplanes. The importance is measured with an estimated rate-distortion ratio that makes use of a correlation model for the original source information and the side information. coding results and comparisons with existing DVC schemes and with H.264 interframe coding are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed System.

In pixel-domain distributed video coding (DVC), due to the largely translational nature of motion, residue errors in the side-information frame are often clustered together. These clusterings can be exploited to reduce the number of syndrome bits required to successfully perform Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) decoding, and therefore improve the overall rate-distortion performance. We shall see that using alternate iterations of LDPC syndrome decoding and Baum-Welch channel estimation proves to be an efficient scheme for exploiting the spatial clustering of errors in pixel-domain DVC. In this paper we demonstrate that a sparser power-law based scheduling of the channel estimation iteration leads to significant reduction in estimation complexity (around 83% reduction) for a small loss in rate-distortion performance (less than 0.75 dB). This sparser scheduling of channel estimation iterations can potentially improve decoding delays.

This paper presents a trans form-domain distributed video compression (DVC) system with block-adaptive Wyner-Ziv coding. In the proposed system, the source symbols are reformatted into several blocks. The parity bits are requested only for the blocks with decoding errors. More accurate placement of the parity bits results in an improved system performance that is much closer to the performance of H.263 interframe coding as compared to existing DCT-based DVC schemes. coding results and comparison with existing DVC schemes and with H.263 are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed system.

distributed Source coding (DSC), formulated thirty years ago, is lately witnessing a great research effort. This effort is encouraged by emerging new applications that could greatly benefit from the properties inherent to DSC, like low complexity encoders and embedded error resilience. Among the challenging topics related to DSC there is the generation of the Side Information, an estimation made by the decoder of the information being decoded. This paper quickly summarizes the theoretical bases of DSC and then focuses on the essential task of generating the Side Information, by developing the model-based method drafted by the authors on a previous publication. It is shown that the application of model-based Side Information generation techniques on top of current state of the art DSC-based video codecs provides an improvement of 0.5 to 0.75dB over a wide range of bit-rates. Comparisons against H.264 are also provided.

This paper proposes an image partition based approach to enhance side information quality in low delay distributed video coding (DVC). The proposed method employs a checkerboard pattern to group blocks of the Wyner-Ziv frame into two sets, where one set is DPCM encoded and the other set is DVC encoded. These two sets are encoded independently and decoded successively. At decoder, DPCM set will be first reconstructed. Then the temporal concealment tool, such as boundary matching algorithm, is performed to conceal blocks in the DVC set. An improved side information is subsequently obtained for DVC set, based on which a higher compression can be achieved. Simulation results indicate that a more promising performance can be achieved when compared with existing motion extrapolated approach.

We study the scenario of pixel-domain distributed video coding for noisy transmission environments and propose a method to allocate the available rate between source coding and channel coding to generate a robust video stream. Having observed in experiments the uncertainty of the source and the channel coding rate, we model them as random variables via offline training, estimate the decoding failure probability and calculate the mean end-to-end distortion. Adaptive quantization is performed for each slice to minimize its mean end-to-end distortion. With this joint source-channel rate allocation, we compare the robustness of two coding prototypes, namely distributed video coding and distributed video coding with forward error correction. According to our experimental results, under same total bit budget, the distributed video coding only scheme proves more robust than the latter one and the gain is up to 1 dB in PSNR.
