An efficient distributed video coding algorithm using symmetric motion estimation and channel division is proposed in this work. We employ the symmetric motion estimation to generate high quality side information for Wyner-Ziv frames. Also, in the channel division, we classify blocks in the side information into reliable ones and unreliable ones. Then, we transmit parity bits for unreliable blocks only, achieving a coding gain. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides up to 4 dB better PSNR performance than the conventional distributed video coding algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a novel two-pass reconstruction algorithm for the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames in distributed video coding (DVC), in which the traditional reconstructed WZ frame is utilized to perform motion estimation to obtain a more accurate motion field. During the motion estimation, the block, as well as its neighboring pixels are concerned. An overlapped block motion compensation is subsequently performed with the help of the motion field, consequently, an enhanced prediction for the WZ frame can be obtained, based on which an improved reconstruction can be achieved. Simulation results show that both the objective and subjective quality of WZ frames can be improved significantly.

This paper proposes a multi-hypothesis based Wyner-Ziv (WZ) decoder for the multi-view distributed video coding (MDVC). Two hypotheses, the intra-view SI and the interview SI, are fed together into the WZ decoder in the proposed scheme. A multi-hypothesis based correlation model (MHBCM) is presented to fully exploit the redundancy between these two SI frames and the original frame. The MHBCM is also applied on the optimal minimum mean-square error reconstruction of the quantized samples. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are able to significantly improve the coding efficiency of the MDVC system.

In some distributed video coding (DVC) systems, the total bitrate depends mainly on the key frames (Intra coded) quality and on the side information accuracy. In this paper, a rate control (RC) mechanism is proposed to achieve and maintain a certain target bitrate for the overall Intra and WZ bitstream, mainly by adjusting online the Intra frames quality through the quantization parameter (QP). In order to obtain a similar decoded quality of Intra and WZ frames, the relevant parameters: QP for the key frames and the quantization index (Q(Index)) for WZ frames are controlled jointly. The major novelty of this work is a statistical model that expresses the relationship between Q(Index) and WZ frames bitrate. The proposed rate control solution is integrated into the VISNET2 WZ codec and the experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm to reach and maintain the target bitrate.

Scalable video coding technologies provide adaptive video applications in heterogeneous and polytropical conditions. However, the highly hierarchical feature makes the loss or unsuccessful recovery of the base-layer to be catastrophic. In this paper, a distributed scalable video coding scheme using the new advances of compressed sensing is proposed to solve this problem at the energy-constrained encoder. The wavelet coefficients of the video frames have inherent fidelity scalability which is utilized in our scheme. Furthermore, the democracy of measurements reduces the risk of base-layer loss over the packet loss channel. Experimental results show that our scheme outperforms the existing scalable compressed sensing scheme by about 2dB.

The quality of side information influences the overall performance of the distributed video coding (DVC). In this context, this paper proposes a practical scheme of using HVSBM to generate side information for wavelet-based DVC. The decoder uses the hierarchical variable size block matching (HVSBM) motion estimation to do the search process and predict side information, which is used to reconstruct Wyner-Ziv frame jointing with the decoded bit stream of Wyner-Ziv frame. And HVSBM uses the criterion of sum of absolute difference (SAD) to divide block. It shows that at the cost of a little higher complexity overall, the proposed HVSBM scheme obtains more accuracy side information and improves the efficiency of the whole codec.

Most recently, the low density parity check codes are chosen as the channel encoding method to encode the Wyner-Ziv frames in distributed video coding. These codes involve much complicated encoding and decoding algorithms, and might increase the processing time of the system. In this paper, we use the codes with simpler encoding and decoding algorithms, the Reed Solomon codes, and compare the performance of both codes in encoding the Wyner-Ziv frames. The proposed model is verified with the addition of white Gaussian noise. The simulation shows that the output video sequence is of acceptable quality compared to the current model with the low density parity check codes. The proposed model is also more efficient as the results could be obtained in a shorter time.

This paper analyzes the coding efficiency of distributed video coding (DVC) schemes that perform motion-compensated interpolation at the decoder. The decoder has access only to the key frames when generating the side information for intermediate frames. This fact introduces a displacement estimation error that depends on several factors: 1) the overall motion complexity;2) the temporal coherence of the motion field;3) the temporal distance between successive key frames. Adopting a state-space model and a Kalman filtering framework, we obtain an estimate of the displacement error variance. This is used to determine the rate-distortion function of the overall coding scheme, that takes into account both intra-coded key frames and DVC-coded frames. The proposed model shows that motion-compensated interpolation is unable to achieve the coding efficiency of conventional motion-compensated predictive coding.

The current interpolation based distributed video codecs get excellent rate distortion performance at the cost of high decoder complexity and delay, which make them almost impractical. An efficient way to solve the problem is to use extrapolation instead of interpolation in side information generation. The proposed codec combines the state-of-the-art optical flow based extrapolation algorithm with modulo operation based low complexity pixel domain distributed video codec and gets high R-D performance. The proposed codec enables the successful encoding and decoding of the frames, thus reducing the delay of the whole system. Simulation results show that the proposed codec outperforms other interpolation and extrapolation based codecs in a series of video sequences. Additionally, the decoding complexity is as low as 1/50 of the traditional distributed video codec without increasing the complexity of the encoder.

distributed video coding (DVC) is rapidly increasing in popularity by the way of shifting the complexity from encoder to decoder, whereas no compression performance degrades, at least in theory. In contrast with conventional video codecs, the inter-frame correlation in DVC is explored at decoder based on the received syndromes of Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frame and side information (SI) frame generated from other frames available only at decoder. However, the ultimate decoding performances of DVC are based on the assumption that the perfect knowledge of correlation statistic between WZ and SI frames should be available at decoder. Therefore, the ability of obtaining a good statistical correlation estimate is becoming increasingly important in practical DVC implementations. Generally, the existing correlation estimation methods in DVC can be classified into two main types: pre-estimation where estimation starts before decoding and on-the-fly (OTF) estimation where estimation can be refined iteratively during decoding. As potential changes between frames might be unpredictable or dynamical, OTF estimation methods usually outperforms pre-estimation techniques with the cost of increased decoding complexity (e. g., sampling methods). In this paper, we propose a low complexity adaptive DVC scheme using expectation propagation (EP), where correlation estimation is performed OTF as it is carried out jointly with decoding of the factor graph-based DVC code. Among different approximate inference methods, EP generally offers better tradeoff between accuracy and complexity. Experimental results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the benchmark state-of-the-art DISCOVER codec and other cases without correlation tracking, and achieves comparable decoding performance but with significantly low complexity comparing with sampling method.
