The current interpolation based distributed video codecs get excellent rate distortion performance at the cost of high decoder complexity and delay, which make them almost impractical. An efficient way to solve the problem is to use extrapolation instead of interpolation in side information generation. The proposed codec combines the state-of-the-art optical flow based extrapolation algorithm with modulo operation based low complexity pixel domain distributed video codec and gets high R-D performance. The proposed codec enables the successful encoding and decoding of the frames, thus reducing the delay of the whole system. Simulation results show that the proposed codec outperforms other interpolation and extrapolation based codecs in a series of video sequences. Additionally, the decoding complexity is as low as 1/50 of the traditional distributed video codec without increasing the complexity of the encoder.

distributed video coding (DVC) is rapidly increasing in popularity by the way of shifting the complexity from encoder to decoder, whereas no compression performance degrades, at least in theory. In contrast with conventional video codecs, the inter-frame correlation in DVC is explored at decoder based on the received syndromes of Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frame and side information (SI) frame generated from other frames available only at decoder. However, the ultimate decoding performances of DVC are based on the assumption that the perfect knowledge of correlation statistic between WZ and SI frames should be available at decoder. Therefore, the ability of obtaining a good statistical correlation estimate is becoming increasingly important in practical DVC implementations. Generally, the existing correlation estimation methods in DVC can be classified into two main types: pre-estimation where estimation starts before decoding and on-the-fly (OTF) estimation where estimation can be refined iteratively during decoding. As potential changes between frames might be unpredictable or dynamical, OTF estimation methods usually outperforms pre-estimation techniques with the cost of increased decoding complexity (e. g., sampling methods). In this paper, we propose a low complexity adaptive DVC scheme using expectation propagation (EP), where correlation estimation is performed OTF as it is carried out jointly with decoding of the factor graph-based DVC code. Among different approximate inference methods, EP generally offers better tradeoff between accuracy and complexity. Experimental results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the benchmark state-of-the-art DISCOVER codec and other cases without correlation tracking, and achieves comparable decoding performance but with significantly low complexity comparing with sampling method.

The coding efficiency of distributed video coding system is significantly determined by the side information quality and correlation model. Motivated by theoretical analysis of the maximum likelihood treatment for linear regression model, we propose a novel joint online learning model for side information generation and correlation model estimation in this paper. In our proposed scheme, each pixel in the side information is approximated as the linear weighted combination of samples within a local spatio-temporal neighboring space. Weights are trained in a self-feedback fashion, during which the correlation model parameters can also be achieved. The efficiency of the proposed joint learning model is confirmed experimentally.

The research on distributed video coding (DVC) has been increasingly popular in recent times due to its promising features. DVC primarily has a modified complexity balance between the encoder and decoder, in contrast to conventional video codecs. In video communications over wireless channels, the noise and multipath fading effects have a significant effect on the perceptual video quality experienced at the decoder. However, it is noted that in all the research literature on DVC, an error-free ideal communication channel is assumed between the encoder and decoder. In this paper, we take into account the effects of noise and fading in a wireless channel on the performance of a DVC codec with necessary modifications to the decoding algorithm while proposing a higher order (4x4) MIMO based diversity scheme to take advantage of the multipath propagation effects to improve the performance. Simulation results show that the proposed DVC system outperform the state of the art H.264 video codec at low SNR levels.

In this paper a Multi-view distributed video coding scheme for mobile applications is presented. Specifically a new fusion technique between temporal and spatial side information in Zernike Moments domain is proposed. distributed video coding introduces a flexible architecture that enables the design of very low complex video encoders compared to its traditional counterparts. The main goal of our work is to generate at the decoder the side information that optimally blends temporal and interview data. Multi-view distributed coding performance strongly depends on the side information quality built at the decoder. At this aim for improving its quality a spatial view compensation/prediction in Zernike moments domain is applied. Spatial and temporal motion activity have been fused together to obtain the overall side-information. The proposed method has been evaluated by rate-distortion performances for different inter-view and temporal estimation quality conditions.

An important issue in Wyner-Ziv video coding is the reconstruction of Wyner-Ziv frames with decoded bit-planes. So far, there are two major approaches: the Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) reconstruction and the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) reconstruction algorithms. However, these approaches do not exploit smoothness constraints in natural images. In this paper, we model a Wyner-Ziv frame by Markov random fields (MRFs), and produce reconstruction results by finding an MAP estimation of the MRF model. In the MRF model, the energy function consists of two terms: a data term, MSE distortion metric in this paper, measuring the statistical correlation between side-information and the source, and a smoothness term enforcing spatial coherence. In order to better describe the spatial constraints of images, we propose a context-adaptive smoothness term by analyzing the correspondence between the output of Slepian-Wolf decoding and successive frames available at decoders. The significance of the smoothness term varies in accordance with the spatial variation within different regions. To some extent, the proposed approach is an extension to the MAP and MMSE approaches by exploiting the intrinsic smoothness characteristic of natural images. Experimental results demonstrate a considerable performance gain compared with the MAP and MMSE approaches.

The side information (SI) used to decode the original frame in the distributed video coding (DVC) is created by a key frame encoded by an existing video codec. This paper proposes a method to restore the original frame using the characteristics of multiple sets of SI and low-density parity-check (LDPC) code. It was identified that the optimal SI could be made by combining multiple sets of SI restored through repeated decoding of SI and LDPC that the SI could be restored to be the closest to the original frame using the optimal SI.

distributed video coding (DVC) is mainly concerning for shifting high computational complexity at encoder of traditional video coding to the decoder. And DVC same with traditional video coding is required by hardware (VLSI) implement. Therefore, in this paper is for current DVC architectures, which are the typical case and easier to hardware (VLSI) implement, as an introduction. In the experimental results, this paper focus on the state-of-the-art DVC (DISCOVER) and the proposed Padding Block Based distributed video coding (PB Based DVC) for comparison. In which the proposed DVC scheme shows better performance than DISCOVER in most video test sequences, and the decoder computational complexity lower than the DISCOVER over hundredfold.

The distributed video coding (DVC) paradigm offers lightweight encoding capabilities which are suitable for devices with limited computational resources. Moreover, DVC techniques can theoretically achieve the same coding efficiency as the traditional video coding schemes which employ more complex encoders. However, the performance of practical DVC architectures is still far from such theoretical bounds, mainly due to the inaccurate Side Information (SI) predicted at the decoder. The work presented in this paper shows that the soft-input values predicted at the decoder may not correctly predict the Wyner-Ziv coefficients, even for regions containing low motion. This generally degrades compression efficiency. To mitigate this, the proposed system predicts the quality of the SI for regions with low motion and then employs a technique which avoids correcting mismatch at locations where the SI and WZ falls within different quantization intervals but the prediction error is within an acceptable range. The experimental results demonstrate that the average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) is improved by up to 0.39dB compared to the state-of-the-art DVC architectures, like the DISCOVER codec.

Novel distributed video coding (DVC) architectures developed by the IBBT DVC group realize state-of-the-art video coding efficiency under stringent energy restrictions, while supporting error-resilience and scalability. Therefore, these architectures are particularly attractive for application scenarios involving low-complexity energy-constrained wireless visual sensors. This demo presents the scenarios, which are considered to be the most promising areas of integration for IBBT's DVC systems, considering feasibility and commercial applicability.
