Based on our previous work on distributed video coding with low complexity motion estimation at the encoder, we propose in this paper a more flexible system, providing the possibility that the encoder and the decoder cooperate in motion estimation and share the computational bulk of it. In this system, not only the encoder but also the decoder is capable of improving the coding efficiency by spending more computational power in motion estimation. Experimental results show that the cooperation of the encoder and the decoder can reduce the total computational complexity and at the same time improve the coding efficiency. In addition, we propose a simple scheme to order the intensity of motion activity for different marcoblocks. When the encoder has limited computational power, we apply motion estimation only to the macroblocks with relatively large motion. This leads to an efficient use of computational power at the encoder.

Recently, a new class of distributed source coding (DSC) based video coders has been proposed to enable low-complexity encoding. However, to date, these low-complexity DSC-based video encoders have been unable to compress as efficiently as motion-compensated predictive coding based video codecs, such as H.264/AVC, due to insufficiently accurate modeling of video data. In this work, we examine achieving H.264-like high compression efficiency with a DSC-based approach without the encoding complexity constraint. The success of H.264/AVC highlights the importance of accurately modeling the highly non-stationary video data through fine-granularity motion estimation. This motivates us to deviate from the popular approach of approaching the Wyner-Ziv bound with sophisticated capacity-achieving channel codes that require long block lengths and high decoding complexity, and instead focus on accurately modeling video data. Such a DSC-based, compression-centric encoder is an important first step towards building a robust DSC-based video coding framework.

The present day video coding standards such as MPEG and H.264 are mainly used for broadcast applications, where the encoder is more complex than the decoder. However, for applications such as low power surveillance networks and wireless video cameras, where there is a dearth of hardware at the encoder, the encoder needs to be simpler, but the decoder can be complex. distributed video coding (DVC) technique is an emerging coding paradigm for the above kind of applications. The primary objective of this paper is to design and implement distributed video coding technique, with high compression efficiency and resilience to transmission errors. The main concern of the design is to shift the computationally complex part in the encoder, i.e., Motion Estimation (ME), to the decoder, thereby making the encoder less complex. The whole design is tested on MatLab software and Wyner-Ziv (WZ) part of the codec is implemented on Beagle Bone Black hardware. The test results show that the performance of the DVC Codec developed is close to the performance of H.264 conventional codec, which is a splendid result according to Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. A PSNR value of more than 35 dB is achieved along with a compression ratio of around 7:1. Also, there is more than 50% reduction in the encoding time when compared with standard codecs like MPEG, H.264, which was the main concern of this paper.

Most state-of-the-art distributed video coding schemes are based on Stanford Wyner-Ziv video coding architecture which takes advantages of efficient channel codes such as LDPC or Turbo codes. The drawbacks that prevent it from practical applications are high decoding complexity and especially latency, since it needs to decode channel codes iteratively and require feedback information many times when decoding a WZ frame. In this paper, we proposed a novel distributed video coding scheme which needs no iterative decoding and only requires feedback information once per WZ frame. It uses a block classification coding strategy combined with a residual computing method based on modular arithmetic. Our scheme replaces complex channel coding with simple entropy coding, which greatly reduce decoding complexity and latency. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can improve the rate-distortion performance over some state-of-the-art distributed video coding schemes for low and medium motion video sequences, while reducing decoding complexity to 10%similar to 1%.

Pattern-based video coding focusing on moving region in a macroblock has already established its superiority over recent H.264 video coding standard at very low bit rate. Obviously, a large number of pattern templates approximate the moving regions better however, after a certain limit no coding gain is observed due to the increase number of pattern identification bits. Recently, distributed video coding schemes used syndrome coding to predict the original information in decoder using side information. In this paper a novel pattern identification scheme is proposed which predicts the pattern from the syndrome codes and side information in decoder so that actual pattern identification number is not needed in the bitstream. The experimental results confirm that this new scheme successfully improves the rate-distortion performance compared to the existing pattern-based video coding as well as H.264 standard. This new scheme will also open another window of syndrome coding application.

Side Information (SI) has a strong impact on the rate-distortion performance in distributed video coding. The quality of the SI can be impaired when the temporal distance between the neighboring reference frames increases. In this paper, we introduce two novel methods that allow improving the quality of the SI. In the first approach, we propose a new estimation method for the initial SI using backward and forward motion estimation. The second one consists in re-estimating the SI after decoding all WZFs within the current Group of Pictures (GOP). For this purpose, the SI is first successively refined after each decoded DCT band. Then, after decoding all WZFs within the GOP, we adapt the search area to the motion content. Finally, each already decoded WZF is used, along with the neighboring ones, to estimate a new SI closer to the original WZF. This new SI is then used to reconstruct again the WZF with better quality. The experimental results show that, compared to the DISCOVER codec, the proposed method reaches an improvement of up to 3.53 dB in rate-distortion performance (measured with the Bjontegaard metric) for a GOP size of 8.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm for video compression mainly based on two major information theory results, Slepian and Wolf's and Wyner-Ziv theorems. In some major ap- plications such as wireless low power surveillance and multimedia sensor networks, wireless PC cameras and mobile camera phones, it is really a challenge for traditional video coding architecture. For both encoder and decoder, it is necessary to have a low power consumption for some cases. So low power and low complexity encoder are essential to satisfy those requirements. This paper reviews some recent developments of dis- tributed video coding. Slepian and Wolf's coding is the lossless source coding and Wyner-Ziv coding is a lossy compression with receiver side information. It has been observed that in most of the traditional video coding algorithm such as MPEG,H.263+ or H.264 the encoder has com- plex computational operation rather than the decoder. The distributed video coding is a new kind of video coding which allows a low complexity video encoding where the major part of computational burden is shifted to decoder. DVC is mainly applicable to two areas that is low complex- ity video coding and robust video coding. The dierent techniques are analysed based on certain parameters such as compression rate, decoding and motion compensation.

This paper proposes a unidirectional encoder rate control (ERC) scheme in the interpolation based distributed video coding. As the encoder is complexity constrained, accurate estimation of number of bits to decode each bit plane is indeed difficult at the encoder. In case of under-estimation of the bits, correction of the errors in the decoded bit planes, by utilizing the available information, is one of the important tasks at the decoder. This was addressed by recent schemes. In this paper, we present an improved ERC, considering higher group of pictures(GOP). The contributions of the proposed scheme are (1) adaptive rate estimation, considering the dependency across Wyner-Ziv frames (2) motion adaptive reconstruction and (3) Side information refinement after decoding all the frames in the GOP. The proposed scheme is tested with several sequences, showing improvements in the case of GOP-4.

distributed video coding (DVC) is an emerging coding scheme that employs principles of source coding with side information (SI) at the decoder. In this paper, we present a new DVC encoder, named LORD (LOw-complexity, Rate-controlled, distributed video coding system). No feedback channel is used in our encoder, and an adaptive noise model that varies both spatially and temporally is employed. The SI is created using motion extrapolation, resulting in a low delay encoding process. We extend LORD for encoding videos acquired by Bayer sensors in endoscopy, in which only partial information of the colors in each pixel is known. This special video format has not been addressed yet in the DVC framework. We show that, using LORD, a significant improvement in performance is achieved over a standard intra-coding method with a similar complexity, on a set of examined videos.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video compression technique based on Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv information theorems with the characteristics of simple encoding and complicated decoding. Side information is a major component of the DVC. It impacts the performance of decoding. In the paper, we propose an improved motion estimation scheme for the side information. The scheme integrates forward motion estimation and bidirectional motion estimation with Kalman filter in order to reduce the complexity in computing the motion vector. Experiments show that the quality of the side information can be enhanced by using the proposed scheme, comparing with the traditional motion estimation schemes.
