This paper addresses the important aspect of compressing and transmitting video signals generated by wireless broadband networks while heeding the architectural demands imposed by these networks in terms of energy constraints as well as the channel uncertainty related to the wireless communication medium. Driven by the need to develop light, robust, energy-efficient, and low delay video delivery schemes, a distributed video coding based framework dubbed PRISM is introduced. PRISM addresses the wireless video sensor network requirements far more effectively than current state-of-the-art standards like MPEG. This paper focuses on the case of a single video camera and use it as a platform to describe the theoretical principles and practical aspects underlying distributed video coding.

Traditional decoder rate control (DRC) distributed video coding (DVC) can dynamically adjust the amount of parity information through feedback channel, which guarantees that minimum parity information should be transmitted from the encoder to the decoder. However, frequent feedback requests increase system complexity and video transmission delay. To solve the problems caused by frequent requests, this paper proposes a new feedback control algorithm which purposefully requests for more parity information through the feedback channel. To achieve a good rate distortion (RD), the proposed DVC architecture also performs frame classification, side information refinement and correlation noise model refinement. Frame classification module makes the judgment whether the current frame worth coding according to the motion intensity, which reduces the complexity of DVC system. Side information and correlation noise model refinement are performed based on correctly decoded bit-planes, which contributes to decreasing the error rate of the decoded frame. Experimental results show that the new feedback control algorithm significantly decreases the number of feedback requests. A good rate RD performance is also achieved with only one request. The proposed architecture has a better RD performance than encoder rate control (ERC) systems, and it also achieves a similar performance to DRC systems without feedback constraints in literature.

We address the compression efficiency of feedback-free and hash-check distributed video coding,which generates and transmits a hash code of a source information *** hash code helps the decoder perform a motion search.A hash collision is a special case in which the hash codes of wrongly reconstructed information sequences occasionally match the hash code of the source information *** deteriorates the quality of the decoded image *** this paper,the statistics of hash collision are analyzed to help the codec select the optimal trade-off between the probability of hash collision and the length of the hash code,according to the principle of rate-distortion ***,two novel algorithms are proposed:(1) the nonzero prefix of coefficients (NPC),which indicates the count of nonzero coefficients of each block for the second algorithm,and also saves 8.4% bitrate independently;(2) the adaptive selection of hash functions (AHF),which is based on the NPC and saves a further 2%-6% bitrate on *** detailed optimization of the parameters of AHF is also presented.

A distributed video coding (DVC) system based on wavelet transform and set partition coding (SPC) is presented in this paper. Conventionally the significance map (sig-map) of SPC is not conducive to Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding, because of the difficulty of generating a side information sig-map and the sensitivity to decoding errors. The proposed DVC system utilizes a higher structured significance map, named progressive significance map (prog-sig-map), which structures the significance information into two parts: a high-level summation significance map (sum-sig-map) and a low-level complementary significance map (comp-sig-map). This prog-sig-map alleviates the above difficulties and thus makes part of the prog-sig-map (specifically, the fixed-length-coded comp-sig-map) suitable for SW coding. Simulation results are provided showing the improved rate-distortion performance of the DVC system even with a simple system configuration. (c) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this letter we present an improved distributed video coding (DVC) scheme based on polar coding techniques. Firstly, we adapt log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for DVC with integer implementation of a discrete cosine transform (DCT). We propose a computationally efficient and numerically stable modification of these LLRs based on the simplified methods of polar codes decoding. We show that on average this approach provides 0.3 dB PSNR gain for DVC with LDPC accumulated (LDPCA) codes. Secondly, we introduce the nested shortened polar codes construction algorithm. We demonstrate that replacement of LDPCA by polar codes improves PSNR by 0.1 dB on average, whereas, for videos with relatively high motion level, the gain reaches up to 0.23, 0.39 and 0.55 dB for Group of Pictures (GOP) lengths 2, 4 and 8 frames, respectively. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that DVC with polar codes and Tal-Vardy list decoder operates up to two times faster than DVC with LDPCA code and belief propagation (BP) decoder.

In this paper, we use the distributed compressed sensing to deal with video coding. To reduce the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm computational complexity, we use the quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization algorithm to reconstruct video signal. In this paper, we analyze the computational complexity of two algorithms, simulation results demonstrate that quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization algorithm greatly reduce the amount of computation. And it has better stability and faster convergence to deal with original video signal. Simulation results demonstrate that we can obtain the better reconstructed video with low sample value, and it can guarantee safety performance. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a relatively new video coding architecture originated from two fundamental theorems namely, Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv. Recent research developments have made DVC attractive for applications in the emerging domain of wireless video sensor networks (WVSNs). This paper reviews the state-of-the-art DVC architectures with a focus on understanding their opportunities and gaps in addressing the operational requirements and application needs of WVSNs.

The common distributed video coding (DVC) systems treat input video frames group by group. In each group of pictures (GOP), usually the first frame, called key frame, is intra-coded and the others are Wyner-Ziv (WZ)-coded. This GOP coding structure presents a fixed and inefficient coding mode switch (key or WZ) at group boundaries, thus preventing a DVC system from adapting the rate-distortion (R-D) performance to varying video content. In this work, a structure of temporal group of blocks (TGOB) with dynamic coding mode (key/WZ) decision is presented. This dynamic TGOB coding architecture determines each image block to be a key block or a WZ block based on spatiotemporal image analysis, resulting in a mode switch of fine granularity in both the spatial and temporal domains. As a consequence, not only the overall coding efficiency is improved, but also the temporal flickering artifacts for the reconstructed video are reduced substantially. Experimental results show that our proposed DVC scheme with block mode decision achieves up to 2.85 dB of quality gain and also up to 51% of temporal flickering reduction, compared to the well-known DISCOVER system.

distributed video coding (DVC) has been featured by exploiting the video statistics, partially or totally at the decoder. Wireless sensor networks are supposed to have lesser complexity encoders at the expense of higher decoder complexity. Therefore DVC is more suitable to video transmission over wireless sensor networks compared to conventional video coding. Current research work on DVC is conducted for loss-less channel,i.e, parity bit stream is not influenced by noise or distortion and further correlation noise due to the residual between input video frame and side information is not estimated effectively. In other words, noisy environment is not analyzed with DVC codec in recent research works. In this paper, DVC codec is enabled with the effect of AWGN noise and further a single wireless fading channel (SISO) is considered. The Correlation noise is analyzed for Foreman and Carphone video sequences and relationship of correlation of adjacent key frames are discussed.

The research on distributed video coding (DVC) has been increasingly popular in recent times due to its promising features. In video communications over wireless channels, the noise and multipath fading effects have a significant effect on the perceptual video quality. However, it is noted that in all the research literature on DVC, an error-free ideal communication channel is assumed. In this paper, we take into account the effects of noise and fading in a wireless channel on the performance of a DVC codec with necessary modifications to the decoding algorithm while proposing a multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) based diversity scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed DVC system with 2x2 MIMO channel outperformed the state of the art H.264/AVC video codec at channel SNR levels below 16dB under similar conditions. Further, possible enhancements to the MIMO configuration are also discussed in this paper.
