distributed video coding is the promising solution for emerging applications such as wireless video surveillance, wireless video sensor networks that have not been supported by traditional video coding standards. Success of distributed video coding is based on exploiting the source statistics at the decoder with availability of some side information. The better the quality of side information, the higher the performance of the distributed video coding system. In this paper, a novel side information creation method is proposed by using different block sizes based on the residual information at the encoder. The proposed solution is compared with the previous PRISM solution and simulated results show that the proposed solution robustly improves the coding performance in some cases of test sequences.

In the distributed video coding, side information is involved not only in the decoding of the quantized source, but also in the reconstruction of the images. So the quality of side information takes an important role in the distributed video codec. In this paper, a refined approach to SI extraction is proposed. Based on the high correlation between the motion vectors of adjacent blocks, the motion vector of each block is estimated considering the predicted motion vector of the neighboring blocks as initial MV. Besides, extrapolation beyond boundary is applied in the unrestricted motion vectors estimation for the case that there is an object moving in and out of the picture or a camera lens shaking. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated in the context of Wyner-Ziv video coding, and compared with existing methods. The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper presents a new wireless video transmission network architecture, which combines our recent proposed low-cost H.264/AVC based distributed video coding (D VC), Digital video Transcoding (DVT) and Decoding-Friendly Encoder Design (DFED). In this new proposed video transmission network, the DVT is worked directly with the DFED, which is quite different from the conventional DVT, and the DFED is known to have the advantage of simple and efficient decoder. Also, our recent proposed low-cost H.264/AVC based DVC solution, named as the Padding Based DVC, requires lower computational complexity (CC) and hardware cost at the encoder side, compared with the conventional DVC schemes. In fact, it uses pad data (blocks and pixels) at decoder from reference frame for those skip blocks at encoder with sum of absolute differences (SAD) and DC classification. Hence, with the new proposed video network configuration, we could further shift the CC from the portable device to the network side, and this enables us to lower the cost of portable device and the overall video network system. The experimental results for the uplink path show that the proposed scheme can achieve desired video quality and outperform the conventional DVC schemes for most test video sequences.

Improving distributed video coding with deep learning

In the current state-of-the-art distributed video coding (DVC) solutions, side information (SI) frames are created by motion-compensated interpolation. This is the same technique used by frame rate upconversion operations. Recently, these operations are accomplished using deep learning (DL), with significantly improved outcomes. DL is also used to improve the decoded images of numerous compression methods. Consequently, it is natural to wonder what are the impacts of these enhancements on DVC. In this regard, we employed DL networks to create SI and enhance the quality of the DVC decoded frames. We show how these two operations were applied to DVC and their effects on rate-distortion (RD) performance. The comparison with state-of-the-art DVC systems shows an improvement in the quality of the SI frames and that of the decoded frames, and thus an improvement of the RD performance of DVC.

This paper presents a new paradigm for the distributed video coding (DVC), its coder architecture is quite different from the current DVC video coding architecture. In DVC codec we shift the complexity at encoder to the decoder side, which is suitable for many specific applications such as the low power surveillance, wireless mobile phone, and visual sensor network. Unlike the most popular current DVC coding scheme, named as the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) DVC codec;it divides video sequence into WZ frame and key frame (H.264/AVC Intra), instead we remove the WZ frame and design a new DVC codec architecture associated with key frame (i.e., 11.264/AVC infra). Since in our proposed codec it is no need to design any channel coding (e.g. turbo coding or syndrome coding) as in the WZ frame, hence requires less computational complexity and reduces hardware cost of the encoder, simultaneously. Since the WZ flume was removed to avoid the rate-distortion (RD) performance degradation, the quality of decoded video sequences for relative high transmission rate (e.g., great than 350 Kbps) could be improved, while remains having similar RD performance as the WZ DVC codec in lower transmission rate. To verify the merits of the proposed DVC video coding scheme, four popular test video sequences are adopted, under specific imposed constraints. From computer simulation results we show that, in general, the RD performance improvement gain compared with the H.264/AVC Intro frame coding, is in the range of 0.5 similar to 2.3dB.

Real-time distributed video coding for 1K-pixel visual sensor networks

Many applications in visual sensor networks (VSNs) demand the low-cost wireless transmission of video data. In this context, distributed video coding (DVC) has proven its potential to achieve state-of-the-art compression performance while maintaining low computational complexity of the encoder. Despite their proven capabilities, current DVC solutions overlook hardware constraints, and this renders them unsuitable for practical implementations. This paper introduces a DVC architecture that offers highly efficient wireless communication in real-world VSNs. The design takes into account the severe computational and memory constraints imposed by practical implementations on low-resolution visual sensors. We study performance-complexity trade-offs for feedback-channel removal, propose learning-based techniques for rate allocation, and investigate various simplifications of side information generation yielding real-time decoding. The proposed system is evaluated against H.264/AVC intra, Motion-JPEG, and our previously designed DVC prototype for low-resolution visual sensors. Extensive experimental results on various data show significant improvements in multiple configurations. The proposed encoder achieves real-time performance on a 1k-pixel visual sensor mote. Real-time decoding is performed on a Raspberry Pi single-board computer or a low-end notebook PC. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed codec is the first practical DVC deployment on low-resolution VSNs. (C) 2016 SPIE and IS&T.

Practical distributed video coding in packet lossy channels

Improving error resilience of video communications over packet lossy channels is an important and tough task. We present a framework to optimize the quality of video communications based on distributed video coding (DVC) in practical packet lossy network scenarios. The peculiar characteristics of DVC indeed require a number of adaptations to take full advantage of its intrinsic robustness when dealing with data losses of typical real packet networks. This work proposes a new packetization scheme, an investigation of the best error-correcting codes to use in a noisy environment, a practical rate-allocation mechanism, which minimizes decoder feedback, and an improved side-information generation and reconstruction function. Performance comparisons are presented with respect to a conventional packet video communication using H.264/advanced video coding (AVC). Although currently the H.264/AVC rate-distortion performance in case of no loss is better than state-of-the-art DVC schemes, under practical packet lossy conditions, the proposed techniques provide better performance with respect to an H.264/AVC-based system, especially at high packet loss rates. Thus the error resilience of the proposed DVC scheme is superior to the one provided by H.264/AVC, especially in the case of transmission over packet lossy networks. A Novel Consistent Quality Driven for JEM Based distributed video coding

distributed video coding (DVC) is an attractive and promising solution for low complexity constrained video applications, such as wireless sensor networks or wireless surveillance systems. In DVC, visual quality consistency is one of the most important issues to evaluate the performance of a DVC codec. However, it is the fact that the quality of the decoded frames that is achieved in most recent DVC codecs is not consistent and it is varied with high quality fluctuation. In this paper, we propose a novel DVC solution named Joint exploration model based DVC (JEM-DVC) to solve the problem, which can provide not only higher performance as compared to the traditional DVC solutions, but also an effective scheme for the quality consistency control. We first employ several advanced techniques that are provided in the Joint exploration model (JEM) of the future video coding standard (FVC) in the proposed JEM-DVC solution to effectively improve the performance of JEM-DVC codec. Subsequently, for consistent quality control, we propose two novel methods, named key frame quantization (KF-Q) and Wyner-Zip frame quantization (WZF-Q), which determine the optimal values of the quantization parameter (QP) and quantization matrix (QM) applied for the key and WZ frame coding, respectively. The optimal values of QP and QM are adaptively controlled and updated for every key and WZ frames to guarantee the consistent video quality for the proposed codec unlike the conventional approaches. Our proposed JEM-DVC is the first DVC codec in literature that employs the JEM coding technique, and then all of the results that are presented in this paper are new. The experimental results show that the proposed JEM-DVC significantly outperforms the relevant DVC benchmarks, notably the DISCOVER DVC and the recent H.265/HEVC based DVC, in terms of both Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance and consistent visual quality.

Adaptive mode decision with residual motion compensation for distributed video coding

distributed video coding (DVC) is a coding paradigm that entails low complexity encoding by exploiting the source statistics at the decoder. To improve the DVC coding efficiency, this paper presents a novel adaptive technique for mode decision to control and take advantage of skip mode and intra mode in DVC initially proposed by Luong et al. in 2013. The adaptive mode decision (AMD) is not only based on quality of key frames but also the rate of Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames. To improve noise distribution estimation for a more accurate mode decision, a residual motion compensation is proposed to estimate a current noise residue based on a previously decoded frame. The experimental results, integrating AMD in two efficient DVC codecs, show that the proposed AMD DVC significantly improves the rate distortion performance without increasing the encoding complexity. For a GOP size of 2 on the set of six test sequences, the average (Bjontegaard) bitrate saving of the proposed codec is 35.5. on WZ frames compared with the DISCOVER codec. This saving is mainly achieved by AMD.

This paper presents a novel hash-based distributed video coding (DVC) scheme that combines an accurate online correlation channel estimation (CCE) algorithm with an efficient side information refinement strategy, delivering state-of-the-art compression performance. The proposed DVC scheme applies layered bit-plane Wyner-Ziv coding and successively refines the CCE bit-plane-per-bit-plane during decoding. In addition, the side information is successively refined upon decoding of distinct refinement levels, grouping specific frequency bands of the discrete cosine transform. The proposed system not only outperforms the benchmark in DVC but several state-of-the-art side information refinement techniques and CCE methods as well.
