In the popular video coding trend, the encoder has the task to exploit both spatial and temporal redundancies present in the video sequence, which is a complex procedure;As a result almost all video encoders have five to ten times more complexity than their decoders. In a video compression process, one of the main tasks at the encoder side is motion estimation which is to extract the temporal correlation between frames. distributed video coding (DVC) proposed the idea that can lead to low complexity encoders and higher complexity decoders. DVC is a new paradigm in video compression based on the information theoretic ideas of Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. Wyner-Ziv coding is naturally robust against transmission errors and can be used for joint source and channel coding. Side Information is one of the key components of the Wyner-Ziv decoder. Better side information generation will result in better functionality of Wyner-Ziv coder. In this paper we proposed a new method that can generate side information with a better quality and thus better compression. We've used HVS (human visual system) based image quality metrics as our quality criterion. The motion estimation we've used in the decoder is modified due to these metrics such that we could obtain finer side information. The motion compensation is optimized for perceptual quality metrics and leads to better side information generation compared to conventional MSE (mean squared error) or SAD (sum of absolute difference) based motion compensation currently used in the literature. Better motion compensation means better compression.

The quality of side information influences the overall performance of the distributed video coding (DVC). In this context, this paper proposes a practical scheme of using HVSBM to generate side information for wavelet-based DVC. The decoder uses the hierarchical variable size block matching (HVSBM) motion estimation to do the search process and predict side information, which is used to reconstruct Wyner-Ziv frame jointing with the decoded bit stream of Wyner-Ziv frame. And HVSBM uses the criterion of sum of absolute difference (SAD) to divide block. It shows that at the cost of a little higher complexity overall, the proposed HVSBM scheme obtains more accuracy side information and improves the efficiency of the whole codec.

In this paper, a two-description distributed video coding (2D-DVC) is proposed to address the robust video transmission of low-power captures. The odd/even framesplitting partitions a video into two subsequences to produce two descriptions. Each description consists of two parts, where part 1 is a zero-motion based H.264 coded bitstream of a subsequence and part 2 is a Wyner-Ziv coded bitstream of the other subsequence. As the redundant part, the Wyner-Ziv coded bitstream guarantees the lost subsequence is recovered when one description is lost. On the other hand, the redundancy degrades the rate-distortion performance as no loss occurs. Therefore, a residual 2D-DVC is employed to reduce the redundancy, where the difference of two subsequences is Wyner-Ziv encoded to generate the part 2 in each description. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes achieve better performance than the referenced one especially when the video motion is low. Moreover, our schemes maintain low-complexity encoding.

The performance of distributed video coding (DVC) greatly relies on the quality of Side information (SI). This paper investigates a novel way of producing SI by intelligently combining macroblocks (MB) produced by two SI generation algorithms, namely higher-order piecewise temporal trajectory interpolation (HOPTTI) and adaptive overlapped block motion compensation (AOBMC). The two algorithms address the problem differently. HOPTTI attempts to improve the motion estimation using higher order trajectory interpolation while AOMBC addresses the blocking and overlapping problem caused by inaccurate block matching. By judiciously selecting when to incorporate AOBMC with HOPTTI, it would give a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improvement in SI quality. Two switching mechanisms, which exploit the spatialtemporal correlation at the macro-block level, have been investigated and the RST-based intelligent mode switching (IMS) algorithm is found to produce enhanced SI quality. Experimental results show that the basic mode switching algorithm gives a PSNR improvement of up to 1.8dB in SI quality compared to using only HOPTTI. The more intelligent RST-based switching provides a further PSNR enhancement of up to 1.1dB for certain test sequences.

distributed video coding (DVC) does not demand motion estimation (ME) and compensation (MC) at the encoder, but only at the decoder and so it is more suitable for applications that require a simple encoder, like wireless sensor networks. In DVC the video sequence is split into Key Frames (KFs) and Wyner-Ziv Frames (WZFs): the first are intra-coded and the latter are coded by a channel code and only the parity bits are sent to the decoder. The KFs are available at the decoder, while we need to estimate the WZF and correct this estimation with parity bits. One critical step is the estimation of the WZF. The method of the state of the art, with which we compare, is given by DISCOVER. It estimates the WZF by linear interpolating the two adjacent KFs. We propose a higher order motion interpolation for WZF estimation by using four KFs. Due to the high computational efforts, we propose also a fast algorithm that halves the complexity of the previous method. We note that the results of the fast method are comparable with the original one. An other proposal is to increase the density of the motion vector field in order to improve the estimation of the WZF.

In distributed video coding (DVC), a low resolution video sequence is usually generated with spatial and/or temporal downsampling at an encoder. At a decoder side, interpolation is performed and the interpolated pixels are further refined by using an error-correcting code such as Turbo codes or LDPC. In our previous work, we proposed a spatial domain DVC which uses a line-based downsampling method called selective data pruning (SDP). SDP is used for reducing the spatial frame size before compression. After decoding, received frames are decoded and interpolated back to their original size by high-order edge-directed interpolation (HEDI). In this paper, we propose a modified high-order edge-directed interpolation (M-HEDI) to avoid interpolation artifacts. Experimental results show that the interpolated frames by using M-HEDI have higher quality than those using HEDI. The proposed method outperforms conventional DVCs and the video coding standard H.264/AVC in majority of all the test video sequences.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding which shifts the complexity from the encoder to the decoder. In DVC, the side information is only known at the decoder to exploit the source statistics. Therefore it has a lower-complexity encoder but higher-complexity decoder. The reconstruction function plays an important role in DVC which can improve the quality of video sequences. In the previous study, pixel values of video frames were considered as the continuous random variables, which is impractical. In this paper, we propose a novel reconstruction algorithm in which pixel values are thought as discrete random variables. We also present a method to model the correlation noise at the encoder to obtain a more accurate estimation of the correlation noise model (CNM). The experiment results show that the proposed reconstruction algorithm is comparable to the optimal reconstruction algorithm and can result in better rate distortion performance than the straightforward reconstruction algorithm.

distributed video coding is a new video coding mode, and it can shift the computational complexity from encoder to decoder. That makes it very suitable for wireless video terminals with limited computing capabilities, memory and power. This technology is rapidly developing with emerging video applications such as wireless video surveillance, wireless digital camera and mobile video telephony. This papersummarizes the distributed video coding technology from the theory to the application from the perspective of basic principle, coding framework, key technology and development trend. On the basis of these, this paper proposes several aspects of distributed video coding that is worthy of further study.

The distributed video coding (DVC) paradigm is suitable for devices which have limited encoding capabilities. However, it is characterized by excessive decoding delays which compromise their application for time constrained services. This limitation can be mitigated by adopting parallel DVC architectures. Yet, the traditional Gray-code or binary-code representations have a non-uniform distribution of mismatch across bit-planes, resulting in uneven decoding times which hinder parallel decoding. This work proposes an alternative indexing scheme, where mismatch is distributed more uniformly amongst bit-planes and thus comparable decoding delays are expected, facilitating parallel implementations. This method reduces decoding time by up to 32% compared to architectures using simple parallel techniques, with a slight loss of 0.06dB in RD performance.
