The recently emerging video application scenes, such as wireless video surveillance network, wireless camera array and so on, which demand low encoding complexity and limited transmission rate, are not suitable for using traditional video coding *** distributed video coding (DVC) is proposed for these *** paper proposes a side information improvement algorithm for one block classification based DVC framework with spatial and temporal analysis, using parallel extrapolate combined with time weighting average result, which can improve the whole rate-distortion *** the same time, new schemes for reducing the needed capacity are presented, which saves the store capacity *** simulation shows that the algorithm in this paper can clearly improve the side information quality and the system performance compared with the original algorithm.

This demonstrator illustrates the performance of our feedback-channel-free distributed video coding system for extremely low-resolution visual sensors. The demonstrator includes a setup where a low-power sensor capturing 30 x 30 pixels video data is connected to a laptop PC. The video sequence is encoded, decoded and displayed on the computer screen in real-time for side-by-side comparison between the original input and the reconstructed data. A software environment allows the user to adjust all the control parameters of the video codec and to evaluate the influence of changes on the visual quality. The objective performance of the coding system can be monitored in terms of bits per pixel, decoding delays, decoding speed and decoding failures.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm based on two major information theory results namely the Slepian-Wolf (1973) and Wyner-Ziv (1976) theorems. Slepian-wolf coding is the lossless source coding and Wyner-Ziv coding is the lossy coding with receiver side information. distributed video coding allows the implementation of lightweight encoders and complex decoders. This is the dual to conventional video coding such as MPEG or AVC/H.264 where the encoder has to carry most of the computational burden. There are various practical solutions proposed to address the two areas where DVC is applicable. These areas are low complexity video coding and robust video coding. These solutions are compared based on techniques used for compression, rate control, decoding and motion estimation.

In a distributed video coding problem, use of a correct model for the correlation noise plays a significant role in improving the decoding performance and consequently in providing higher coding efficiency. In this work, we first study the predictive and additive correlation noise models at the DCT coefficient band level for transform-domain distributed video coding. Then, bounds on compression rates for encoding the quantized DCT coefficient band are obtained for both the correlation noise models. We then investigate how the distribution of the DCT coefficient bands in each WZ frame affects the compression rate bound in each correlation noise model. It is shown that for the DCT coefficient bands being non-uniformly distributed, the compression rate bound in the additive correlation noise model lower than that in the predictive one. Moreover, it is shown that selecting a wrong correlation model leads to compression rate loss in the decoder. The simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical investigation.

In a transform domain distributed video coding scheme, the correlation between the current encoding unit, e.g. block and slice, and the corresponding side-information is modeled using a virtual channel. This correlation model is then used for rate allocation, quantization, and Wyner-Ziv coding. Since the encoder can only have an estimate of the correlation instead of the exact knowledge of the side-information, the decoder will fail to recover the quantized transformed coefficients with a nonzero probability. In this paper, we propose to integrate a scheme at the decoder to recover the undecoded coefficients using the spatial smoothness property of individual video frames. Simulation results demonstrated that, at different decoding failure probabilities, a transformed coefficient recovery scheme can significantly improve the quality of videos in terms of both PSNR and SSIM.

The distributed video coding (DVC) paradigm offers lightweight encoding capabilities which are suitable for devices with limited computational resources. Moreover, DVC techniques can theoretically achieve the same coding efficiency as the traditional video coding schemes which employ more complex encoders. However, the performance of practical DVC architectures is still far from such theoretical bounds, mainly due to the inaccurate Side Information (SI) predicted at the decoder. The work presented in this paper shows that the soft-input values predicted at the decoder may not correctly predict the Wyner-Ziv coefficients, even for regions containing low motion. This generally degrades compression efficiency. To mitigate this, the proposed system predicts the quality of the SI for regions with low motion and then employs a technique which avoids correcting mismatch at locations where the SI and WZ falls within different quantization intervals but the prediction error is within an acceptable range. The experimental results demonstrate that the average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) is improved by up to 0.39dB compared to the state-of-the-art DVC architectures, like the DISCOVER codec.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding paradigm that attracts more and more research interest these years. In DVC, reconstruction is a key module closely related to the quality of the decoded video. This paper proposes a reconstruction scheme of Bi-directional Motion Compensated Reconstruction (BMCR) for pixel domain DVC, in which bi-directional motion compensation is performed to find reconstruction values for the pixels whose corresponding side information values are outside the decoded quantization bins. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed BMCR scheme improves both the objective and subjective reconstruction quality without increasing the bitrate, compared with the commonly used reconstruction schemes.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a video coding paradigm that exploits the source statistics at the decoder based on the availability of the Side Information (SI). Stereo sequences are constituted by two views to give the user an illusion of depth. In this paper, we present a DVC decoder for stereo sequences, exploiting an interpolated intra-view SI and two inter-view SIs. The quality of the SI has a major impact on the DVC Rate-Distortion (RD) performance. As the inter-view SIs individually present lower RD performance compared with the intra-view SI, we propose multi-hypothesis decoding for robust fusion and improved performance. Compared with a state-of-the-art single side information solution, the proposed DVC decoder improves the RD performance for all the chosen test sequences by up to 0.8 dB. The proposed multi-hypothesis decoder showed higher robustness compared with other fusion techniques.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a technique that allows shifting the computational complexity from the encoder to the decoder. One of the core elements of the decoder is the creation of the Side Information (SI), which is a hypothesis of what the to-be-decoded frame looks like. Much work on DVC has been carried out: often the decoder can use future and past frames in order to obtain the SI exploiting the time redundancy. Other work has addressed a Multiview scenario;exploiting the frames coming from cameras close to the one we are decoding (usually a left and right camera) it is possible to create SI exploiting the inter-view spatial redundancy. A careful fusion of the two SI should be done in order to use the best part of each SI. In this work we study a Stereo Low-Delay scenario using only two views. Due to the delay constraint we use only past frames of the sequence we are decoding and past and present frames of the other. This is done by using Extrapolation, to exploit the time redundancy and well known techniques for stereo error concealment. This allows us to create good quality SI even if we are only using two views. In this work we have also used a new method in order to fuse the two SIs, inspired by Multi-Hypothesis decoding. In this work the multiple hypotheses are used to fuse the SIs. Preliminary results show improvements up to 1 dB.

In wireless video broadcast system, analog joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has shown advantage compared to conventional separate digital source/channel coding in the aspect that it can avoid cliff effect gracefully. What's more, analog JSCC only needs a little calculations at the encoder and has strong adaptability to different channel condition, which is very suitable to the wireless cooperative scenario. Thus in this paper, we propose a distributed cooperative video coding (DCVC) scheme for wireless video broadcast system. The scheme is based on the transmission structure of Softcast and borrows the basic idea of distributed video coding. Different from the former cooperative video delivery methods, DCVC utilizes analog coding and coset coding to avoid cliff effect and to make the best of transmission power. The experimental results show that DCVC outperforms the conventional WSVC and H.264/SVC cooperative schemes, especially when the cooperative channel is worse than the original source-terminal channel.
