Multi-view video systems provide 3D information about the captured scene. This 3D information can be useful for many emerging applications, e.g. 3D TV or virtual reality. However, many current video systems consist only of one camera and consequently do not capture the 3D content of a scene. In this paper, we therefore present an efficient, flexible and low-complexity method for extending an existing mono video system to a 3D system. The main idea is to develop a coding framework that starts from a single camera and that can be flexibly extended by low-complexity cameras to capture 3D video data. These cameras do not perform any motion or disparity estimation, but still good coding efficiency is achieved by relying on distributed video (DV) coding principles, i.e. jointly decoding of the independently encoded frames of the multi-view cameras. If we compare our coding results with the results for low-complexity DV coding of a single video, then higher efficiency is achieved since not only the motion between the frames of the video but also disparity between different views of the array of cameras is exploited at the decoder.

In the frame of compressed sensing distributed video coding, the design of the quantization matrix directly affects the reconstruction quality of the receiving terminal of the video. In this article, we present a new design method of the Gaussian quantization matrix adapting to the compressed sensing coding, for that the distribution of the parameters of the image is featured of the characteristic of approximately normal distribution after measured by compressive sensing. By this way, the parameters of a certain quantity of the image frames depending on the video sequences generated by the Gaussian quantization matrix possess certain adaptive capacity. By comparison with the plan of the traditional quantization, the quantization matrix presented in this article would improve the reconstruction quality of the video.

We consider distributed video coding in a monoview video-plus-depth scenario, aiming at coding textures jointly with their corresponding depth stream. distributed video coding (DVC) is a video coding paradigm in which the complexity is shifted from the encoder to the decoder. The Side Information (SI) generation is an important element of the decoder, since the SI is the estimation of the to-be-decoded frame. Depth maps enable the calculation of the distance of an object from the camera. The motion between depth frames and their corresponding texture frames (luminance and chrominance components) is strongly correlated, so the additional depth information may be used to generate more accurate SI for the texture stream, increasing the efficiency of the system. In this paper we propose various methods for accurate texture SI generation, comparing them with other state-of-the-art solutions. The proposed system achieves gains on the reference decoder up to 1.49 dB.

In this contribution, a novel method for distributed video coding for stereo sequences is proposed. The system encodes independently the left and right frames of the stereoscopic sequence. The decoder exploits the side information to achieve the best reconstruction of the correlated video streams. In particular, a syndrome coder approach based on a lifted Tree Structured Haar wavelet scheme has been adopted. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper presents a distributed joint source-channel 3D video coding system. Our aim is the design of an efficient coding scheme for stereoscopic video communication over noisy channels that preserves the perceived visual quality while guaranteeing a low computational complexity. The drawback in using stereo sequences is the increased amount of data to be transmitted. Several methods are being used in the literature for encoding stereoscopic video. A significantly different approach respect to traditional video coding has been represented by distributed video coding (DVC), which introduces a flexible architecture with the design of low complex video encoders. In this paper we propose a novel method for joint source-channel coding in a distributed approach. We choose turbo code for our application and study the new setting of distributed joint source channel coding of a video. Turbo code allows to send the minimum amount of data while guaranteeing near channel capacity error correcting performance. In this contribution, the mathematical framework will be fully detailed and tradeoff among redundancy and perceived quality and quality of experience will be analyzed with the aid of numerical experiments.

This work presents a new distributed multiview coding framework, based on the H.264/AVC standard operating with mixed resolution frames. It allows for a scalable complexity transfer from the encoder to the decoder, which is particularly suited for low-power video applications, such as multiview surveillance systems. Greater quality sequences are generated by exploiting the spatial and temporal correlation between views at the decoder. The results show a good potential for objective quality improvement over simulcast coding, with no extra rate cost.

To achieve low-power video communication in Internet of Things, this study presents a new deep learning-based fast transcoding algorithm from distributed video coding (DVC) to high efficiency video coding (HEVC). The proposed method accelerates transcoding by minimizing HEVC encoding complexity. Specifically, it models the selections of coding unit (CU) partitions and prediction unit (PU) partition modes as classification tasks. To address these tasks, a novel lightweight deep learning network has been developed acting as the classifier in a top-down transcoding strategy for improved efficiency. The proposed transcoding algorithm operates efficiently at both CU and PU levels. At the CU level, it reduces HEVC encoding complexity by accurately predicting CU partitions. At the PU level, predicting PU partition modes for non-split CUs further streamlines the encoding process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CU-level transcoding reduces complexity overhead by 45.69%, with a 1.33% average Bjøntegaard delta bit-rate (BD-BR) increase. At the PU level, the transcoding achieves an even greater complexity reduction, averaging 60.97%, with a 2.16% average BD-BR increase. These results highlight the algorithm's efficiency in balancing computational cost and compression performance. The proposed method provides a promising low-power video coding scheme for resource-constrained terminals in both upstream and downstream video communication scenarios.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding paradigm, which mainly exploits the source statistics at the decoder based on the availability of decoder side information. One approach to DVC is feedback channel based Transform Domain Wyner-Ziv (TDWZ) video coding. The efficiency of current TDWZ video coding trails that of conventional video coding solutions, mainly due to the quality of side information, inaccurate noise modeling and loss in the final coding step. The major goal of this paper is to enhance the accuracy of the noise modeling, which is one of the most important aspects influencing the coding performance of DVC. A TDWZ video decoder with a novel cross-band based adaptive noise model is proposed, and a noise residue refinement scheme is introduced to successively update the estimated noise residue for noise modeling after each bit-plane. Experimental results show that the proposed noise model and noise residue refinement scheme can improve the rate-distortion (RD) performance of TDWZ video coding significantly. The quality of the side information modeling is also evaluated by a measure of the ideal code length. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Wyner-Ziv (WZ) video coding is a particular case of distributed video coding, which is a recent video coding paradigm based on the Slepian-Wolf and WZ theorems. Contrary to available prediction-based standard video codecs, WZ video coding exploits the source statistics at the decoder, allowing the development of simpler encoders. Until now, WZ video coding did not reach the compression efficiency performance of conventional video coding solutions, mainly due to the poor quality of the side information, which is an estimate of the original frame created at the decoder in the most popular WZ video codecs. In this context, this paper proposes a novel side information refinement (SIR) algorithm for a transform domain WZ video codec based on a learning approach where the side information is successively improved as the decoding proceeds. The results show significant and consistent performance improvements regarding state-of-the-art WZ and standard video codecs, especially under critical conditions such as high motion content and long group of pictures sizes.
